29 years... that is an insane life for an HDD. They looked so much more complicated back in the day with the huge PCB... but wow were they reliable. May it Rest In Peace.

It is, these products were designed to last 5 years at most. This HDD lived a good life.

What a cool looking drive! It's too bad it decided to head crash! Very detailed pics of the inside. Thank you for sharing this rare gem.

I believe the head crashed when they ran it without the screw on the actuator pivot. Head or media was already damaged but from the looks of it the head didn't crash until after it was opened. If you're going to run a drive open then replace the screw on the actuator pivot.

I have a 635 mb WD Caviar with a massive amount of bad sectors (around 30mb) and I also tried to fix them with spinrite but when the heads were in the damaged area sometimes the drive would power down or make weird noises so I left it alone. I still use it almost daily but fortunately the bad sectors are on the last 30% of the drive so I still have a healthy and useful 450mb drive

Sorry to hear that. You could try using the WDAT_IDE.exe program I mentioned in the video. But honestly I agree with you leaving alone based on the behavior. If it happens to be physical damage like it was on mine, it could ruin the heads. Glad to hear it’s still functioning well for you!

Caviar 1210 failed here. Out of the blue, during a 95 install. What's the weirdest is that it absolutely scanned fully fine (no bad sectors, not even weak ones at that) the day prior.

That is strange. I guess it’s like people dying from natural causes. Once drives get that old there’s no telling when they will just stop working. While it’s a shame, these products were designed to last 5 years at most.

My caviar 2850 also died of head failure. It tested perfect, but it sat for 3 months because my IDE cable broke, and it was working when i used it again. However, it started failing the seektest a few times after i started using it, and eventually it failed. It did come back after sitting again, but it failed for good after i tried writing to the disk.

I’m sorry for your loss. Head failure just sneaks up on you like that. Both these drive models seem to be very similar so maybe it will be a common problem with these units. I love my 2850, so hopefully this doesn’t happen to it.

The single platter varients of early WD caviars seem to be rarer then the two platter ones, so that is really a bummer. But yeah that's sadly what can happen with 30 years old mechnical devices :(

It is unfortunate. I have only 3 single platter caviars. They definitely seem to be rare. This unit was almost exactly like my 2850 so at least there’s that.

Then it was likely a Caviar 2850. Head failure is a common issue on those. In fact, I've had multiple people comment on my channel talking about how their 2850's heads failed.

So I was just Starting up Windows NT4.0 from it and it suddenly gave me bluescreen and the Hard drive started clicking really loudly. I started the drive again and it just did not pass the seek test and kept doing the click of death. After like 2 months i put it back in the pc and it just booted like nothing has ever happend. No bad sectors or anything@@antequated.archive

It's a sad irony that trying to fix the drive is what ultimately led to its demise! 😞
@antequated.archive
@antequated.archive 2 месяца назад
Very true. Failure was probably inevitable though. I remember hearing the heads running over track 0 many times trying to fix it. This would make a noise as it had physical damage. Truthfully it’s a miracle it even worked in the first place. At least, I could enjoy it while it lasted.

I tell everyone if you value it back it up in 2 places. I use a mirror drive and DVD disks. Tape backup was a great thing in its day. I have rescued a few drives in my day. I still do not trust SSD at this point. I also have lost dash cam video once due to cam losing power before shut down, due to failed internal battery. It was only the last 3 minutes. But in an accident it is the last file that counts.

Yes totally agree. Although I will say, SSDs are extremely reliable in my experience. Maybe even more so than mechanical hard drives.

Great job with the video! As a recommendation, I wish the pictures you showed were a little bit longer, I usually try and give the viewer enough time to view the pictures and analyze them briefly. I have a theory about what probably happened, I feel bad as maybe I foreshadowed what was likely going to happen. In your lot video with this drive, remember how I mentioned that clunk it did at first wasn't a good sign and I hope it didn't have platter damage? Thinking about it and looking back at that, I believe that during the shipping due to the poor packaging the actuator with the heads got knocked out of the parking area, onto the outside of the disk, and had the heads impact the platters in a small spot. Then after this it must have gotten knocked back into the parking area, hence why the drive spun up fine, but the damage was already done to the drive. That combined with how the very start of the drive was damaged and track 0 likely was too, the damaged area eventually after the heads went over it so many times, caused the heads to grind on that spot and material eventually got under the heads and then caused the crash on the outside of the disk on track 0, killing the drive and the system area as well as the heads from going over that bad spot so many times since track 0 is the most important track on the entire drive along with the system area stored right by it. That was what I think happened at least based on what I have seen, either way that is a shame how it ended with this one : ((
@antequated.archive
@antequated.archive 5 месяцев назад
Thanks for the analysis! That sounds about right unfortunately. That lot was pretty bad. Only 1 out of 5 drives actually ended up working and the working one is filled with bad sectors(it’s from 1997 so that’s expected). The packing was actually better than some of the horrors I’ve seen. It was still pretty bad. About the photos, I was trying to go for a more cinematic effect and figured the viewer could just pause. Thanks for the feedback.
@cdos9186
@cdos9186 5 месяцев назад
@@antequated.archive I guess the good thing is at least you will have some PCBs to save other drives you may get with bad PCBs or damage to the PCB. I save pretty much all of my bad drives for that reason since I buy so many untested (since it is so much cheaper that way usually). The packaging I have seen is awful, I had one seller of a lot of Caviars awhile ago just literally throw all the drives into a box and ship them out, with like three plastic bags thrown in for protection. Kind of impressive how bad some sellers package stuff. At least it was better packaging than nothing, and sorry that it didn't go so well for drives that worked, but I always try to think and assume if the drive is totally trashed, at least the PCB will likely be worth the cost if the lot is cheap enough. No problem with the more cinematic effect, I did that a few times as well just with a longer duration of each image. Best of luck in the future with things!

Not sure if these drives have an actuator lock or not. If so then it's unlikely the head got knocked out of the landing zone.
@cdos9186
@cdos9186 3 месяца назад
@@DrFreeeman They sort of do, but not as strong. They have a magnet that holds the arm in the park position. The magnet doesn't do much however when the drive gets slammed around, I have had this happen with these before and they make an audible clunk when parking if they are knocked out of the landing zone and power is applied. It does happen and unfortunately when it does with that much force, it usually has internal damage.
@DrFreeeman
@DrFreeeman 3 месяца назад
@@cdos9186 Makes sense. In that case it's likely possible if it gets slammed hard enough. Nice little combiantion of head and media damage plus maybe even spindle damage. Quite a shame.

@avamnepohui7260

Most likely the reason is not the delivery. When a drive is broken during delivery, it immediately starts clicking or works, but diagnostic utilities show that the entire surface is damaged and the drive is performing poorly and slowly. It's likely that someone has hit a running computer with this hard drive in the past. After the impact, the heads scratched the disk (the outer edge, where the scratched ring is visible, is the beginning of the disk, where the file system is stored, where the computer always accesses), corrupting the data. The disk or computer was thrown out. At first the damage was not so critical, but constantly reading the damaged area began to scratch the disk even more and destroy the heads, after which the disk finally broke.
@antequated.archive

@@avamnepohui7260 Interesting theory!
@XL-Tech
@XL-Tech 5 месяцев назад
@@avamnepohui7260 not always. I have had quite a few drives shipped to me, and a few of them ended like this after being absolutely tossed in shipping. The heads can unlock during shipping, causing damage that will spread once it turns on. The vibration can also slightly damage heads, which can lead to a drive that works initially, but fails down the road because of the slight damage. I personally think this drive naturally failed. Head failure can cause a crash without any external force sometimes, and it sounds like this one just had enough after almost 30 years. I also had a caviar 2850 that died of failed heads. The thing just broke after sitting for a couple months. It died sort of like this one, where it was working, then it failed after a few spin-ups.
