I arrive at Bridgwater and Taunton canal in Somerset a couple of hours before a school is due to arrive for a coaching session, in the hope I might be able to winkle out a perch or two on a light lure set up, before they arrive. The first annual frosts, leaf fall and bright winter sun conspire to make it very tricky, but the glassy surfaced gin clear water and leaf litter are a welcome challenge.
I had a plan to use a fox snax curly tail micro lure set up weedless, but was caught by surprise as all the blanket weed that had been choking the canal for months had died back and flattened in a matter of days. A switch to a 5g fiiish black minnow helped to cut through the leaf litter and keep myself far enough away from the lure to hide from the few fish brave enough to be feeding in the crystal clear open water.
