It is a blustery autumn day but I take my 1949 Dodge out for a drive in case it can not go out so much in the coming winter

I love driving videos. Yesterday I took our 1964 Ford Thunderbird to a dentist appointment, and then off for some shopping. The weather here in Palm Springs CA. is changing, and getting cooler. The temp dipped below 68 F after the sun had set, so I turned on the MagicAir heater. The heater kept me nice and comfy.

GREAT CAR, GREAT DAY, GREAT DRIVE! I owned BEATEN; a '50 Dodge Meadowbrook 4-door sedan and a '51 Dodge Coronet 4-door sedan! I WISH I HAD EITHER (BOTH!) TODAY!

When I was about 5 y/o, my parents went with a "friend" from Arkansas to Los Angeles in a '49 Dodge. We traveled the "northern" route up thru Utah, across to Washington State, then down the Coast Highway to LA. First thing that happened, Mr. Douglas, the owner of the car, pulled off the road near Salt Lake, against the advice of my Dad. He promptly became STUCK in the salt, and ruined a new pair of wingtip shoes! Had to get a tow! The trip went downhill from there. Mr Douglas didn't *tell* us he had a sister out in LA, and to save train fare, she could ride back with *US*. This made for 5 adults and one very dissatisfied child. She had enough luggage to LIVE out West for years, it seemed like. Anyway, we took Route 66 back down (southern route), and I had to ride either in Mom's lap, or sit in the floor of the Dodge. In Colorado, the car started making a "bumping" sound. NO wonder! The poor old car was way overloaded and the springs were bottomed out. The car was all mashed down in the rear. We overheated climbing the mountains, had to wait for it to cool. We pulled off at a garage to see what the bumping/thumping sound was; it was the shocks which were ruined. Douglas became even more grumpy at having to shell out money for shock absorbers, and the trip was becoming an ordeal. The Dodge was underpowered with its 6-cyl motor and the overloaded condition. And Douglas asked Pop, "Sid, what's the matter with this car"? "Doug, you've simply got it overloaded!" And that made Douglas even more cross. We all agreed (the adults) that we would stop at the Grand Canyon, but Douglas was so MAD, he zoomed right past the turn off with a determined look and a firm grip on the wheel. Everybody scolded Douglas severely--which made him almost fighting mad. There was no A/C in the old Dodge, and we mostly traveled at night across the desert, or sweated profusely in the crowded heat. Three days on the road back to Arkansas & a miserable trip! Pop said when we got home, and the Dodge drove away, "Never again, never again; I'll take the TRAIN next time!" LOL!

My family had a blue 49 Dodge Meadowbrook when I was age ,11 to 13. My dad bought the car in 1966 for $250.00. it was driven by my mother but it some even though I was not old enough to drive.The flathead six was slow on acceleration and didn't like to be driven over 50 mph so I took it easy on the old gal. The car was build like a tank from heavy steel. It had low miles in good condition. When my dad bought a later model car he gave the 49 Dodge to my cousin for his first. car then he bought a newer car and uncle drove the Dodge to work for several years. I don't know what happened to the car after that but I sure wish I had it.

I've got a '50 and they'd done away with manual choke by then. You set the automatic choke by pushing the accelerator to the floor before starting it.

@@hudsoninbury My dad's '50 hasn't been converted to manual AND the automatic doesn't work. Getting it started can be fun times. My starting problems come from the gas seeping back into the tank, so I have to mash on the pedal for a while if it's been sitting more than 48 hours.

@@hudsoninbury I think there is a non return valve, they just don't work after 70 years!

I had a '49 Wayfarer when I was 18 that I had to sell because I couldn't restore it and mom kicked me out. Was sad watching it leave on that trailer 😔 Thanks for the ride!

Since it's a Dodge, the transmission is just the regular 3-speed Fluid Drive, correct?
@seed_drill7135
@seed_drill7135 4 года назад
You could also get the semi-automatic M6 "Gyromatic" transmission, which was a two speed with underdrive on both low and high range. I've had a couple, but they weren't running examples, so I've never actually driven one.

Hello, question I have the same car 49 coronet with the 3 speed fluid drive trans.. what are you getting for top speed.. every website I see says these can reach up to around 80 mph but mine feels as though at 50 mph I am really pushing it.. don't want to over rev the engine..
@danokerr9929
@danokerr9929 6 лет назад
Tobias Wilson i can get up around 55 60 on my 50 dodge fluid. Its the gearing in these cars. The gears arent made for high speed and these old cars you dont wanna push it. Its a old car youll get there when you get there

Hi Tobias, I have a 1951 Dodge (they have the same 230 L6 in them) and I can get up to 80 or so before it starts to feel like I am pushing it. I usually cruise at about 65 or so and do that very comfortably.
@TheShanegto

Dr. Mason yours is a fluid trans?
@TheFuzzyCreeper
@TheFuzzyCreeper 5 лет назад
@@TheShanegto Apologies about the late response, yes it is the Fluid-drive. The manual with the automatic-style 2nd gear.
@seed_drill7135
@seed_drill7135 4 года назад
@@TheFuzzyCreeper So, the Gyromatic? Since they essentially give you four gears, I've wondered if that lets the engine operate at lower revs at speed than the three speed fluid drive. I'll take mine to 65, put it seems a bit stressed, especially going up hill.

Couldnt you just drive in hi range?? Original literature calls that's the drive range
