Thank you for this video! This is my favorite time of year. It’s starting to cool down after a long hot summer. The holidays are around the corner, but not yet taking over. The smells and colors!!!
I’m here in Arizona however less warm doesn’t mean the we abandon our dressing standards. Looking well is an integral part of thinking well. Attention to the fit, coloring, polish, and style is no less important. Thanks so much for your channel being devoted to quality dress and grooming for we gentleman.
got myself a tweed suit from Tarland, an hours drive from Aberdeen. Absolute top quality, camt wait to wear it. Very heavyweight but modern tweed suit. Clearly made to measure for someone who's my physical twin. Got it in Bristol charity shop.
Sage advice Ash. Autumn is here, out comes the tweed jacket, Loake Bedales - burnished to a mirror shine. Plus the perfect climate for Aramis, that masuline yet refined fragrance. Leaving a trail of women swooning in its wake! I love Autumn, in many respects the best season for stepping up ones style! I must confess I am envious of your burgundy/ ox blood broagues Sir. That colour is superb!!
Ah yes autumn , my favorite time of year. The brog boots, corderroy trousers, fedoras and flat caps. And I have been wearing Barbours for 40 years. I am a Tweed man and just got a very good deal on eBay. I found a Gieves and Hawkes of savile row London and this will be my go to a lot this season. Best regards Ron
Let's hope that cool and misty Autumn is (finally!) come to us. I was away for a few days in Cornwall last week and it was hotter and stickier than the height of summer - urgh!
I have neglected a certain Tweed Sports Jacket and Black Wool overcoat for the last 4 - 5 years (in favour of Barbour and Harrington Jackets) I plan to get them ready for this Autumn and wear them regularly.
Nothing beats a Harris tweed jacket with a pair of khaki chinos or grey flannel trousers during the autumn months. I like to wear flat caps, berets, or a grey felt Fedora to protect my head, brown leather Dent gloves lined with cashmere to protect my hands, and a pair of full brogue brown Oxfords on my feet. The fall is the time to bring out wool ties, knitted ties, and silks or silk-and-wool blends that incorporate autumn colours of brown, red, gold, and green. I'll often wear a light weight wool scarf, or sometimes even a patterned silk one, around my neck, with the material just showing along the lapels of my jacket. For outerwear, in my opinion, nothing beats a traditional trench coat in khaki, or a waxed trench coat in green with a subtle windowpane pattern in red or yellow for a splash of colour.
Ohh maybe you could make a video about different watches to wear during different times of the year. Apologies if you’ve already done one. I have yet to binge all your videos! 😊
Autumn is a wonderful part of the year 🍁🍂 I love G F Trumpers Eucris edt/edp and their Sandalwood (which is very close to Chanel’s Egoist) GFT Sandalwood has been my signature scent for many years, when it comes to the cooler months 👌🏼
I just bought a Lambswool cardigan in an Aran pattern in Forrest green with orange flecks. I love lambswool. It’s so cozy. It has brown football buttons that button all the way up to its collar to really keep me nice and toasty. I also have my off white Aran turtle neck Merino wool sweater I like to wear with my peacoat. When I wear them together, my wife says “You off to sea then, Captain Birdseye?”😂😂😂
I’m days away from putting my warm weather fragrance in the back of the drawer, switching my linen jackets for tweed, switching to derby boots for everyday wear… My favorite time of year.
Ash sound advise, wool is a super product, keeping, you dry warm and breathable Just think about where your products are made and with a little research, UK wool is world leader and supporting Made in UK quality, ethic products
Hi Ash, Thanks for the video. IMHO you have forgotten a garment that is basically informal but can be very elegant in a casual outfit. It is a gilet, it can be warm and comfortable at the same time and someones are discreet enough to be worn under a tweed jacket in a very smart outfit. Greetings from BCN,
I recently got a green Hart Schaffner Marx suit from the '70s-'90s. Brown derbies, a felt pork pie hat, and an off-white shirt, and I'm set! I'm wearing it today. Felt Hat Day was yesterday, so it's officially the season for earth tones and wools.
In “From Russia, With Love” there is an exchange between James Bond and Tatiana Romanova . On a sleeper train out of Turkey she notices that 007 doesn’t wear cologne, and asks him why this is. Bond replies, “We wash.”
Hi 👋 I'm in my sixties now. I don't have much hair anymore. So i have started to wear hats and caps. I have explored thrift shops , and i have purchased some pork pie style hats. Love them.
Great video!! Loved the suggestions. One addition, if I may. Autumn is the time for that solid or TT rose gold watch. The lower light levels give the gold a particular luster and the rose tint plays perfectly with autumnal colors.
Aramis, my signature fragrance. Any important event. It's aramis, but otherwise yes citrus based on the warmer months and deeper warmer scents in the winter. Accessories are so important. Scarves, different knots, gloves one pair black one Brown in leather and a thermal pair for those really cold days
Thanks for another great video,Ash. You have an extensive vocabulary and easily weave new words into your conversations. I seem to be stuck on the vocabulary of my technical field of employment and the lighter conversations with friends and family. Perhaps you can enlighten us on the methods of your well intentioned and purposeful vocabulary!
The best tool I can offer for improved vocabulary is simple - read. I read a lot and this has always helped with my understanding of the English language and the way I use it in daily life.
I really get something out of all of your videos. Thank you for posting them. I enjoy this one as well, although hearing the Mid-Atlantic United States, we won't be wearing fall jackets until late October
Autumn, Barbour wax jacket. Beginning of Autumn is rewaxing time. I usually switch between redwings for casual and grenson derbys (commando) and loake chukka (dainite) if a bit more formal. I do need to pick up some more knitwear.
My problem with dressing for the English weather is that, generally speaking, the autumn/winter/spring months are wet but not particularly cold. The clothes however, and coats in particular, seem to be made for sub-zero conditions. This means that i rapidly overheat when out for a walk. Breathe-ability would be nice but i haven't found it yet.
Agreed on all counts Ash. Great advice. I would like to drop a tip. Here in the States there is a particular type of woolen overshirt known as the Board Shirt. They are very stylish, collected and beautiful. The company that makes them keeps their patterns and colors in constant rotation. I happen to know a gentleman who has a collection of more than 30. No two are alike and each one is terrific and rare. To some they have become investment pieces and are quite valuable. Look them up. Cheers.
Pendleton. "Board" aka surfboard, is just a marketing name for a two pocket wool plaid shirt not meant to be tucked in. Popular with West coast surfers. They used to make their clothing in the USA now the fabric is shipped overseas to be made. Plaid is also said to hide a concealed handgun easier, you may note it is popular with Hispanic gang types in East LA. @@TheChapsGuide
Picked up a couple of wool/merino cardies and jumpers and merino scarfs this year... also a nice cashmere (i think) overcoat for the winter... the only good thing about winter. Might resole one pair of my Chukkas with Dainite... I'm loathed to do so as I love leather. Also picked up a New Old Stock pair of hand stitched/handmade pigskin Dent's gloves for fairly cheap. Got a few caps, my pride and joy is a lovely Lock & Co dark dark navy flat cap that my middle brother gave me as he had others he prefers.. It looks the dogs dangly bits, even on my ugly mug.
Perfect timing Ash. Do you have any preferred brands when it comes to knitwear? I don't seem to have much luck when it comes to knitwear! Usually, the wool on mine 'pills' quite quickly and they never last very long. Are there any harder wearing styles or brands out there? Thanks Ash 👍
Ah, Autumn. Where the weather doesn't know what it's up to. Yesterday found me sweltering in full Battledress and a Dennison Smock when it should have been significantly cooler out. Today I went out in jeans (I know "Quelle Horreur"), T-Shirt (ditto) and a leather jacket. I was cold. I have no need for additional items this year, though should I end up in Wiltshire again, I shall venture once more to Dent's. I am looking forward to the rustle and crunch of fallen leaves in the coming months. *salutes
Thick wool jumpers are impractical. You can't wash them in the washing machine (apart from maybe a gentle cycle which doesnt wash properly) you can't tumble dry them and you can't ring them out and you have to dry them flat. I strictly buy 100% cotton knitwear. You can do all the above and it doesn't itch.
Great video Ash. I truly enjoyed it. Fall is coming... finally! I cannot wait to bring out my tweed jackets and flat caps. It will also be my first season wearing dress boots.
Do they use rock salt in the UK? We use it here on sidewalks but they have gone more with salt brine for the roads. Rock salt can be a real killer on footware once the first snow falls, be sure to clean it off and not let it sit as it will suck all moisture out of your boots in no time.
For autumn I usually go with tweed jackets, but this year I have ordered a suit in a brown/khaki corduroy to see how this will complement my autumnal choices. In the same autumnal vein I'm also expecting a Norfolk jacket in grey tweed to arrive sometime in the next weeks. (also in the same vein of something not arriving: the pen I sent you happened to try to arrive right when you where on holiday, it's ensured and on it's way back and then will be turned around again...thanks DHL for taking forever...😐) If it gets a bit more cool in the mornings I will be breaking out the Burberry trench coat again, but it's still much too "late summer" for that here. I'm less of a "sweater"-bloke, I tend to wear my shirts (also the colder it get's the heavier my shirts, there are some lovely non-Canadian-woodcutter-in-the-Yukon-flannel shirts to wear😉) complemented with sweater vests though I love my roll-neck cashmere sweater. Shoe wise I'm too suburban/urban in my usual environments to truly change a lot, maybe if it's truly wet and cold I break out my brogue boots but I remain with Derbies (the more robust veering into Blucher territory though, but I built them to be sturdy...) and Oxfords with the occasional Monkstrap. On top of the classic Dainite and Commando sole (Vibram makes great ones if you have to get new ones on your boots, used them upgrade a crappy cheap boot of my fiancée) also consider boosting your leather soled shoes to winter usability (under urban conditions mind you) by sheathing the leather soles in a hard rubber upper layer and having the heel blocks changed to something from hard rubber - doesn't degrade the elegance substantially but makes your shoes a bit more weather resistant. Hat wise I'm insanely happy once the summer is done, while I like my various Panamas and other straw hats, event he occasional newsboy cap in linen, my majority of hats are more winter appropriate, I can break out my diverse tweed caps, my collection of Coke hats and Fedoras as well as the occasional Homburg all have spent time waiting in my closets and now are ready for deployment^^. And I truly love my gloves - most of them a various unlined leather dress gloves, there's a pair of peccary gloves, and yes, I also have some lined ones, but I rarely use them, I spent most of my everyday workdays inside or commuting. Ah Aramis, I feel it's a bit weak in it's default EDT concentration but I still love it, was my first choice of a winter fragrance back when I started my journey to Chap Nirvana (didn't know it then though 😆), today it has been supplemented by too many to list but most of them in EDP concentration with some outliers like the extremely powerful Quorum or the classic Drakkar Noir in EDT. In short: I absolutely love the colder season! Best regards Raoul G. Kunz
I wore my Jaeger trench coat out for the first time this year yesterday. The season has certainly shifted here, although with the climate these days - anything is possible!
Another great video Ash! I use Polo Green in the cooler months. Tabaco and sandalwood is what got me hooked on it. The wife likes it also so that makes it a plus. I have used it so long now it is almost a signature of mine. The kids know to get it for me as a go to gift 🤣 ( FYI) I am on the list for an Explorer II Polar . I find myself out in the woods with the Beagle (Mr.Flair) more often then not. That would round out my 3 Watch collection I think. 1- Submariner 41MM Steel/Yellow Gold 2- Explorer 39MM with the White gold 3,6,9 3- What do you think about the Explorer II in White ? Thanks again for the Videos Ash!
I rather like the 2 Exp 2 models, both black and white dials. I personally favour the black dial, as it appears more rugged and milspec, but my sticking point is the 42mm size. Just too big for own wrist, but a beautiful watch whichever you can get!! Enjoy.
Considering it’s always winter in my heart, Taylor and/or Proraso’s sandalwood cologne and aftershave respectively is always in the rotation. Does anyone else feel that sandalwood could straddle of the seasons?
How do you prevent moths from going after your natural material clothing. I use Lavender misters and Ceader wood. But still worried might get attacked by moths.
@TheChapsGuide I wash after every use and what's not in use I brush off. I tried using Moth Balls but it leaves a chemical smell in room, closets, and on you. Since I live in South Florida the humidity here makes you stink more of the chemical of moths ball.
How do you wear a flat cap without looking like a Peaky Blinders fan? I found out that the series showrunner (boss) set up a Newsboy/Bakerboy cap line for sale. As you have noted in earlier videos, it is not wrong to be different and better. Still being different and looking like you copy characters on a show, when you are 60 +, might not work.
Just followed your old advice to use Abbot's shoes and ordered a pair of Red Wing 3140 chukka boots. £118 with the 10% first purchase deal.... Rrp £260 Hopefully it's a nice brand? Do you have experience? P.s. a little watch update. I'm now wearing the Seamaster 2541.80..... for offered that green op36 ... bought and sold almost immediately.... really not impressed
Hi Ash, I got almost every tips on the video. I even order my first pair of dents gloves on sale with tweed which I’m trying to break in. The thing I don’t really have is a dresser boots, all my GY welt boots are casual and my shoe rack has a spot for one, should I go for a dressy chukka, balmoral, or a brogue derby/Oxford?
Hard to choose, but my go-to in the winter is a full brogue (wingtip) boot - A Loake 1880 Burford in burgundy to be precise. Its equally smart and casual when needed.
It's an North American thing, We have Scent Free signs on our offices, does not apply to the warehouse. One person I know is militant scent free and a bit of a kill joy about it. @@TheChapsGuide
@TheChapsGuide Thank you for the prompt advice. Cashmere is relatively cheaper in my region. But i will opt for the wool for better durability. A fan of your content from far away Mongolia.
