I paid $88 Australia to learn this a few weeks ago with a teacher who I think is good. But I just gotta say this... you are the best guitar/ music teacher that I NEVER met! I wish you lived here in Australia or I lived there in Vienna! I get so much out of your lessons. You really know how to GIVE! THANK YOU! 😊
Sandra, you have taught me the importance of learning the WHY! Jazz is like Algebra. If you don't learn why you're playing that chord, you will get lost eventually and only get so far. You can't just memorize songs. You have to understand the theory behind it... especially if you want to improvise
Absolutely. You can't imagine in how many keys I've played Autumn Leaves in the Lau 25 years. I wouldn't be able to do that, if I didn't know the cadences and the scale theory behind that song. It's both, the II V I in major and it's relative minor cadence in this song, with the IV degree as a connector chord. That's really all there is to this song.
Sandra Sherman, I’ve had a few drinks, but I’m sure I’ll feel the same way in the morning. I love you. You spend so much of your time teaching us in a very mellow and patient way. You are the best.
I know it's a couple of years but your Jazz guitar videos like this one are still playing a big role in my learning to play Jazz guitar. Thanks, Sandra.
I'm glad to say this is the very first Jazz standard I managed to learn from a video lesson because you are a great teacher and made it not too overwhelming for beginners. I've acquired the tabs for the Chord Melody starter pack and hopefully learn the other songs as well. Thank you very much for your work.
So happy for you! You started a new adventure. Make sure to check out the bonus chord sheet and watch the connected video lesson for the basic chords, before learning chord meöody standards! It makes things so much easier.
Unter Anderem: Summertime, Sunny, Night and Day und Misty. Hoffe es ist was für dich dabei. Viel Erfolg beim üben. Und falls du Fragen hast, zögere nicht. LG aus Wien, Sandra.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you soooo much. i have watched so many versions of this but yours are the only one i can relate to, so detailed and you are not trying to hide anything but just to help one to understand and enjoy playing the guitar. Thank you I just love your way of teaching. if at all possible i would love a version of Satin Doll it would be much appreciated.
elgato Negro Thank you for your kind words. That's one of the nicest compliments I've ever got ❤ And yes, Satin Doll is in my repertoire and on my list for a video. It won't be next, though, because I've already made a bunch of others, including "Fly Me To The Moon" and "Beautiful Love", that will be on next.
Thanks so much! I’ve been a pop/rock guitar player for over 20 years but never even played a half-diminished seventh chord before last month, and now I’m playing my first jazz tune. It’s great that you’re doing this so well and not even in your native language!
Thank you for this lesson. I'm a newbie to jazz and already love everything you do. This was my first lesson with you and I'm progressing fast - thanks to you 😘
You such a fantastic teacher. Loved learning and now playing "Over the Rainbow" and half way through Autumn Leaves. Each afternoon while my wife plays piano I practice with you. Always something challenging and exciting to look forward to. Such much more to learn. THanks!!!!
Wow Sandra! Thanks so much for posting this. I especially like that you take the time to explain the chords and melody lines in depth. Easy to understand. You're truly a great teacher. :-)
i've been playing guitar for many years, your arrangements and style of teaching are awesome. you are a great teacher. I will be checking out all your other lessons, please keep posting these, thank you.
You dont know it but I have been spending the last 6 weeks or more with you. I learned All The Things and Autumn Leaves I'm a finger picker, mostly acoustic blues and rock. I have seen a lot of the greats Herb Ellis, Joe Pass, Barney Kessel. The new guys too I have seen. Your teaching is very good you have a lot of patience. The jazz chords have such beauty, my favorite the 13th chords. The two chords B flat maj 7 and E flat Maj 7 that follow the second melody on AutumnLleaves part I played over and over again. They are so beautiful. It is like a painting. I think I dream of this stuff. So thank you very much from Long Beach California I'm 65 yr old and a guitar lover before I first heard the Beatles when their first USA album was released. I will drop something by paypal you are well worth it.
Oh, your wife or girlfriend will get jealous, if you spend so much time with me 😊. Thanks for your lovely words. I'm glad you let me be a part in your learning path. Keep swingin', my friend from Long Beach (my Dad grew up there).
I am a beginner in Jazz guitar and your lessons are the best in RU-vid. Slow and detailed explanation show your kindness for students. Please keep going, it would be very very helpful for the others. Subscribed!
i cant imagine :D what if it becomes real, you shoot another lesson giving us a solo, accompanied with crazy chord substitutions (ones that makes one get lost in it), with your amazing precision on exploring and explaining...once i get the naked chemistry of those changes, i believe i can get a chance to manipulate some phrasing madness...thank you for your huge, huge effort and superb clarity.
hi sandra from the great white north, thx for replying so soon i am moving in a week and i will shortly be getting my guitar. soon after that i will use patreon, also i have read alot of the comments you get, and am not surprised that the people love you and your channel, your warmth comes across very well, u seem like a very nice gal, sort of wish you were closer, anyway i will be in touch and have started watching the videos on those cords u suggested , bye for now , john
This is my favorite Jazz song. I've been diving back into Jazz over the last few days. This really helped me develop a concept for chord/melody with this tune. Thank you so much!!!
Sandra, I am enjoying your channel so much. I thought pieces like this, and many others you have dissected into tutorials were going to be out of my reach due to the time it takes to get good enough to play them. Thanks to you and your tab notations they are now possible. You're the best!
Senior male citizen who also extends his gratitude and best wishes in relation to your tutorials featuring jazz guitar standards/classics. It is a joy to listen to your video and pick up the chords as well as the know-how in integrating melody lines along with chord patterns. Beautiful song of course, but you excel at teaching and have wonderful technique. If you ever get over to this side of the world (Chicago, IL, USA), would love to say hello and buy you lunch or a libation. Cheers!
Many thanks for posting this! While I found the single note melody playing comes easily to me, many of these chords are entirely new to me. I've found it to be very helpful to just play the chords in order(after writing down the chord shapes on a sheet of paper), to familiarize myself with these new shapes(and fingering changes between chords). This might be a helpful tip for others watching this lesson as well. I noticed you've asked for suggestions. Maybe a chord melody for "All the Things You Are"?
This is really good tutoring. I could actually learn the chords while incorporating the melody as well. It took awhile though but I got it eventually. There's some tough finger acrobatics in there which helped to stretch mine till it hurt...😊
Make sure to check out jazz chords, before attempting chord melody style. It's so much easier if you know what you're doing. Check out my chords playlist!
Thank you Sandra, that was awesome! Really appreciate the time and detail spent on all parts of the song! Your lessons/instructional materials are as good/better as any I have seen. Especially helpful for those like myself relatively new to jazz but having a real passion to grow and learn this music. So glad to have found your channel'! 😊🎶
Thank you for this, I'm primarily an extreme metal musician, but this resource has broadened my ability to maneuver the fretboard. Cheers from Flint Mi🤘🏻😊
Yay! Make sure to check out my chords playlist, so you know what you're doing. Knowing the basic jazz chords is the key to success here. I also have the chords video online for Autumn Leaves. Check it out!
I just have to say thank you so much for this very well explained and clear lesson! I have never played jazz in my life, it comes across so overwhelming and complicated. This is the first standard I will learn. These chords are so beautiful. Thank you again!
I have gotten so much from your videos that I feel I need to thank you for everything you are doing. You have a gift for teaching and it's wonderful that you are sharing it with all of us on RU-vid.
Very happy to have found your site, so far the best one on the internet teaching jazz standards in a way I can follow. This is the second video lesson I watched, looking forward to many more, please keep them coming 🎼🎶😎
Thx Sandra. your arrangement is so clever making playing technically easier. its the syncopation that is important for this piece. your inspirational and a excellent teacher with a great website. glad to have found you.
Glad you dig it. I think it's a good arrangement for beginners. Indeed I usually do a lot more syncopation, than they're is already in this arrangement, but I wanted to keep it simple, so beginners don't have a hard time.
I love the way that you teach... Thank you!! You really want us to understand... Never show us at full speed, how it can really sound! (And , therefore, confuse us) Love that you show us the bones and then we can make it as musical/ jazzy etc as we want. Thank you SOOOOO MUCH!! Great teacher! Thank you so much for sharing your talent and knowlege!
Great instructional video Sandra! ❤ Love it, you are an awsome, patient and detailed instructor of 🎸music, with a pleasant voice, I will make sure to follow for your next lesson and content. 👍
Thanks, Sandra! I'm a big fan. I really appreciate all the note for note lessons. I'm hooked on your style of instruction. The song I'd like to learn next is Nocturne by Lage. I wonder if you have ever considered teaching this tune.
Recently discovered your channel, and as someone that considers themselves Jazz-curious, I've learned a number of standards and can play either the melody or the chords, but most chord-melody arrangements I've seen either don't include a lesson or are too advanced for me. This arrangement strikes a perfect balance of changes and single-note lines, and uses enough conventional chord shapes that I only had to learn a few new ones (always good!) to be able to play the entire arrangement. Can't wait to tackle the next one. I love your version of Mr. PC by the way! Thank you so much!
Thanks so much for your kind words ❤️. I try to keep it as simple as possible, while giving some theory information (at least on the intermediate level videos). My recent vids are mostly intermediate level, but I'll shoot a couple of easy level videos during the summer, which will be released in autumn. So, stay tuned!
Wow, free music! 😁 You're the best Sandra!! 😉 I forgot I had already printed this lesson a few weeks ago and I just came across it. Now I have some time to work on it. 🙋🏻♂️ ~Cheers!
This was great. As a new convert to Jazz and blues, I was able to follow a long with your logical explanations why you chose certain chords to provide tension and resolve. Beautiful tutorial!
AlbertandTempie Williams Thank you so much! Check out my basic jazz 7th Chords tutorial and the follow up für tension chords. Also, since your seem to like blues, I'll be having up a jazz blues swing style comping out in a couple of weeks.
Výborně. Děkuji za metodiku. Pokročilí zopakují. Nováčci objeví a zvládnou. Jen tak dál. Neumím německy, trošku anglicky .. so go on, Your lessons are amazing .. Thank You Radim from Czechia.
@@GuitarversumSandraSherman i’ve played since i was 10 and now in my late 60s i’ve decided to actually learn a few songs lol kinda late i know but i’ve never been very dedicated Your careful explanation and useful tabs have given me confidence and im very grateful

After watching your excellent class, I bought the Chord Melody Starter Pack. It is exactly what I was looking for! I played pop & rock for years, and now I am studying classical guitar, but I wanted to put my Les Paul to good use so your class is perfect for starting my experiences playing jazz. Good job, Sandra! Greetings from Iowa-USA!
been watching your videos for two years now but I was too afraid to attempt, chord melody just looks so hard.. I tried Autumn leaves and surprisingly it only took me two days to nail thank you so much
Hey Sandra, Grrrrrettings from the south of germany 😊 I play Death Metal since over 25 years. My first love was the band Slayer. A few months ago i bought a Gretsch Guitar for playing Rockabilly and Swing music. Through your chanel i get to know these nice jazz music.
