Yamadera, properly called Hojuzan Risshakuji Temple, is a temple of the Tendai sect of Buddhism, founded by Jikaku Daishi in the 2nd year of the Jougan era (860). The temple complex is built on a steep rocky hill, and there are 1,015 stone stairs leading to the Daibutsuden and Okunoin at the top, and it takes about 30-40 minutes to reach the top.
The Daibutsuden (Great Buddha Hall), located at the far end of the temple, enshrines a 5-meter-high golden statue of Amitabha, and the Nyohodo Hall, also known as the Okunoin, sits next to it.
The temple has a deep relationship with Hieizan Enryakuji Temple, the head temple of the Tendai sect. The "Immortal Lamp" was divided from Enryakuji Temple to Risshakuji Temple, and when Enryakuji Temple was rebuilt after Oda Nobunaga burned it down, the "Immortal Lamp" was divided from Risshakuji Temple in reverse.
The area around the Nokyo-do and Kaizando halls, a little way down from the top, offers a spectacular view. The small red hall is the oldest building on the mountain where sutras are stored. Kaizando is the hall of Jikaku Daishi, the founder of Risshakuji Temple, and houses a wooden statue of Daishi.
Further on, you will find Godaido Hall.
The Godaido Hall enshrines the Godai Myoo (the five great kings) and prays for peace and tranquility. From Godaido, you can look down on the precincts with the autumn leaves and get a bird's eye view of the area around Yamadera Station at the foot of the mountain. On the other hand, looking up at Yamadera from the foot of the mountain is also wonderful, and you can see the magnificent autumn colors of the entire mountain.
Yamadera is also famous for having been visited by Matsuo Basho, who composed the famous haiku.
The temple is also designated as a "place of scenic beauty" and a "historic site" by the government.
Mahoroba Ancient Village Historical Park is located in the mountains of southern Yamagata Prefecture, and is a historical park with shrines, ancient tombs, and restored pit houses. The only three-story pagoda in Yamagata Prefecture stands at the Akutsu Hachiman Shrine, which is the symbol of the park.
This area has been inhabited by indigenous people since the Jomon period, and is dotted with burial mounds and Jomon pottery on display in the museum. You can also see a reconstructed pit house from the Jomon period.
There is also a "Michi no Eki" (roadside station) nearby for convenient access to this park, where you can experience the history of the Jomon period.
