Talking about rich history, It is only in the UK, that a town with an ancient history like Abingdon which was the county town of Berkshire for hundred of years until Reading usurped it in 1869- and situated in Wessex- just up the road from the birthplace of King Alfred in Wantage, was dumped into Oxfordshire in 1974- which is a part of the kingdom of Mercia. Historically absurd. Count Nikolai Tolstoy actually put up some Berkshire signs before the bridge into Oxford to mark the old boundary but they were taken down- he understands the meaning of history.
