Autumn Wildcamping in the Lake District

My friend, Heather, and I headed up to the Lake District last weekend to see all the Autumn colours before they disappear! We first headed to Rydal where Heather went for a freezing swim, then for lunch at Lucia's in Grasmere and then heading over Kirkstone Pass to Patterdale where we started out hike and camp. The evening was pretty freezing and it ended up blowing a gale all night! But nothing beats wild camping, whatever the weather, and we were in the most beautiful location :D

You two are my new Rock Stars, your presentation has bought tears to my eyes. I went to Rydal a few years ago and stayed in at yurt at Rydal Hall and from there explored the Lakes. The lakes can match anywhere else in the world for beauty. Loved your spirit and enthusiasm, I wish there were more people in the world like you two. Looking forward to watching your films and future content.

Over the course of my life I have been fortunate to travel to many beautiful parts of the world, but I struggle to thank of any quite as beautiful as the Lake District, a place dear to my heart. Thanks for sharing.

Heather is a brave woman it’s a beautiful view in such a beautiful part of the country,I have only been in the lakes a few times . When I finish my camper van build I will be seeing a lot more of it thanks for sharing your video

Thank you for magnificently catching the beauty of the Lake District. The colours of the vegetation it’s so breathtaking, the music captures the essence of the surroundings. This scenery inspired many works of romantic literature, it’s not hard to see why.

What a fabulous spot and enjoyable video. Spent many happy family holidays years ago staying at Side Cottage in Patterdale, but never did walk up to Angle Tarn. Will have to try and remedy that one day. Back in my day, there was no such thing as 'wild swimming', it was just 'swimming' :-)

I just been in LD last summer for the first time. Love that mornings on the lakes site, sun go up on rocks and quiet...Fresh coffee and tea, breakfast and go another day... take care ladys. Tom

It's so interesting to see the difference between UK/Europe camping and in North America. When I saw you eating in the tent I got so immediately terrified for your safety until I remembered there aren't any bears about for you.

What beautiful scenery! We are aussies living in Berkshire, and we visited the lakes for the first time this autumn. We fell in love with the region, and can’t wait to visit again! Not sure if I am as brave for the wild swimming though....!

Hi Athena and Heather, or should we be calling Heather Lady of the Lake, I enjoyed your hike riding on your backpacks, did not get tired one little bit, also did not feel the cold one little bit, so were is Oslo your dog? I hope you have not left him asleep in the car, being serious it looks like you had a very good yomp in the hills, the scenery and the colours were outstanding, thanks again for another great hike, I will depart and catch up again with you further down the trail as they say in all the best Westerns.

Beautiful scenery, loved the music. You girls have a healthy appetite, or a very small frying pan. I think your friend needs certified swimming in those temperatures. I would never have thought of carrying a wet suit up a mountain. Loved the editing, a very professional job, pity you couldn't stay longer the scenery is beautiful. As a typical warm blooded male, My first thought was "wow cute redhead in a tight dry suit", Then I pulled myself together and realised that girl has bigger balls than me.. Great video as usual, tempted me to do a camping circuit rather than a hut to hut round next time I'm hiking in the lakes, maybe when it's a tad warmer though unless there's winter climbing to be had!

Great video, thanks. I love your presentation - it moves along unlike others that have you watching a tent being put up for 10 mins! You both have a calm, natural, warm and friendly nature in this film, and you seem so happy and smiley it was really good to watch. Found you by chance but will be following. One question - without being too personal, how did you keep warm overnight up a hill in the Lakes in late October? Was it layers and layers of clothes, or decent sleeping bags? I ask as the big thing I hate is the thought of being cold overnight when camping

I was quite cold to be honest, but I do have a really good sleeping bag (Rab Mythic 400) and slept in Merinos and a down jacket :)

top stuff....swam in most of the lakes up there, when I used to do triathlons, and non of them are warm even in summer time..Wasdale is the worst, about 10 deg C and scary deep.

I will be visiting England at the end of June and would love to do some wild camping in either the Peak District or Lake District. What are the rules for how and where you are allowed to camp?

I've done it a few times. The rules now are quite relaxed. Angle tarn is not High up at all, as long as you're respectful, most landowners won't mind. But to be safe, try and camp somewhere away from obvious pasture land. Here's a link to the official website and a helpful list. www.lakedistrict.gov.uk/visiting/where-to-stay/wild-camping
