That was the review I’ve been waiting for. Thanks for posting. BTW 8 degrees of precession in 45 minutes is within IFR limits and it beats the hell out of what my mechanical gyro does 👍

Thanks for the real-world review. Your DG gyro drift of 8 deg in 45 mins is much better than even a new mechanical gyro. The new AV-30 with the magnetometer hardware is even better. My mechanical AI gyro just died again, so rather than throw good money after bad rebuilding it, I'm installing dual AV-30 and eliminating the vac system just like you did. In the long run (10-20 years) the system will pay for itself since you won't be rebuilding gyros & replacing vac pumps. Plus you get an extra pony from the engine since it's not driving the vac pump, and 15 lbs. lighter.

Nice video. Nice mod and your involvement in understanding the system is commendable. Two cents - anything loose on the glareshield is a hazard. Even a small bottle cap, sunglasses, toys. Distractions/threats during turbulence or an evasive maneuver are never good. All the best.

I've been thinking about doing the same thing on my 150. This was really helpful for me. I am in Huntsville, AL at KMDQ. I may want to fly to Morristown and talk further about this if you have the time. I certainly appreciate your honesty in this video.

Thank you for posting your thoughts on these. They do look like a much tidier installation than the G5's do. I know Garmin as their new models, GI-275, but these look like a more affordable and still capable set of instruments. I'll have to re-watch and hear what you mentioned about the IFR certification of your setup, that part seemed to come and go pretty quick. Thanks again!

Great video; your 150 is in good shape . I just had two of these installed the av30's; removed the entire vacuum system. I flew it for the first time a couple of days ago; I did have the same problem with the DG, had to adjust it several times flew for about an hour; Not a huge deal; will probably install the new magnetometer , there is a ton of information on these units; its a little overwhelming, and one heck of an upgrade. I am flying a Piper 140. I looked a at the GI275's, they are better, but in my opinion overkill for this class of airplane, and the price killed the deal on them. The AV30's are much more flexible as you can change a lot of the data fields, and modify it to what you like, GI275 are a la carte, and you need to pay for the extras.

Amazing review 👏 👌. I will purchase two AV30's and AV Link for updates. I use a GNS 530 for GPS guidance and will watch for drift.

I am currently looking to buy a Cessna 150 that has the old vacuum system installed. I will definitely be upgrading to the AV 30 system for sure.

Thanks for the video! It was nice to see the UAvionix being used in the wild rather than just a demo video. Also appreciate you discussing the precession issue, which is what's kept me from them in the past. Didn't know there were new updates that might fix the issue.

I have thought about these for a vintage 172 . Cheaper then g-man but I don't know as I have seen alot of complaints about the DG drift. If it's not dependable it is worthless no matter the price.

Thanks for the review. I'm in the market for a 150 but most of what's out there in my price range has pretty terrible avionics. Overall, how many hours did you have in the install including the vacuum system removal? Also, have you worked with the uAvionix echo system? Thoughts on it for ADS-B in/out/GPS?

Id say I had a day removing and a day installing. Probably not full days. I kinda remember calling it quits for the day shortly after lunch. No I have not worked with the Echo system

I cleaned out my baggage compartment and I saved 30-50 pounds. You’ll be surprised how much junk and unnecessary items put in there.

They make an external magnetometer now for about $300. I assume to address this issue.

I had the magnetometer installed in my avionics when I purchased them and they weren’t even activated and the update hardly helped. I spent my money on crap and now don’t have the money to swap to Garmin. Should’ve spent the little bit of extra money to go with Garmin.

8 degrees of drift seems perfectly acceptable. I had the same concerns when I installed my AV30 but in reality these days how often do you use heading? In the case where you might want that info you still have the compass so I just set mine to display the track info from my GPS and that has been fine for my use. The next thing I want to do is install a Tail Beacon X to get ADS-B out and eliminate the transponder from my panel. So to answer the question: yes, it's worth it.

I like the bottom of your doors being see through. Wandering if you can change your transponder squawk with that. Or do you have the old UAvionix?

Hi how does this work as far s IFR certification. I have installed a Garmin WASS 430 with Garmin VOR in my 150. Btw I installed a UMA digital tach in my 150K

Not at all. Never heard anything except on the headsets, i can barely make out a change in some background static.

Don’t buy AV-30’s if you’re in a certified aircraft or you’ll be waiting on the FAA to certify the fix for your horrible precession issues. I’ve sent my Av-30’s back for the update and still don’t have reliable instruments you take one turn and everything goes haywire.

About to tackle this like you did a&p ia supervision…but after wiring it and install is there anything to do with the software for calibration?? Also is the OAT required for the AI to work normal?

Viewing this again, I would argue with your "weak link" assessment. Your NOT returning the instrument for recalibration makes YOU the "weak link" rather than the instrument. The fix is available, you simply choose not to avail yourself of it.
