Oh yes, the new Ava Max album. Looks as pretty as it sounds. Needless to say, this was my most anticipated album since Bebe Rexha's "Better Mistakes" in 2021 and already pre-ordered it long before the release, but I was happy to see your vid a few hours before my album arrived on Friday, so that I knew my physical purchase was worth it. Ever since Ava Max's breakthrough with "Sweet But Psycho", she stood out to me, her entire presence, visual and musical, radiated a huge popstar energy, one I almost instantly knew that if her immediate follow up songs would be equally captivating and she wasn't just a one hit wonder, that at least in my personal music library, she'll hold a special place. Ava Max became a regular on the radio, although commercially she did not have the same string of blockbusters that Lady Gaga and Katy Perry who both radiated exactly the same instant star momentum. Nevertheless, "Kings & Queens", "Salt", "My Head & My Heart" and "The Motto" became widely recognized pop hits of the past handful of years. I kinda wished the same would gave happened for "Who's Laughing Now?" and "OMG What's Happening", two of her absolute strongest tracks next to "Salt". To me, Ava Max in her still very young career, is my favorite pop artist of the past 10 years. Dua Lipa, Ariana Grande and The Weeknd are all hot contesters, but I think the reason that I gravitate so much towards Ava Max is that she, more than any other artist these days, embodies so much what it has means to be a pop star, and what it has meant in the entire era from the 80s to the early 2010s (I'd say the 80s are where our modern idea of pop music shaped). It is expected of modern pop stars to, at least to some extent, be a reflection of their surroundings. Which can be a great thing when it comes from the heart, but it's new that such is to be expected from pop music. I think the reason some feel that Ava Max feels anonymous or even like an industry plant is that she does what pop stars did for decades: she largely leaves her artistic output thriving in its own microcosmos. That this does not limit her artistic vision is demonstrated by this sophomore album. "Diamonds & Dancefloors" has an underlying theme of, as Ava Max herself described it, "heartbreak on the dancefloor". It's reminiscent of albums like Kylie's "Fever", Madonna's "Confessions on a Dancefloor" and Cher's "Believe". Albums made for the floors with a larger than life approach to production and with a distinct personality in performance and content. That show that pounding beats, glossy synths and ridiculously earworm-ish hooks can make up for an outstanding album of escapist music, especially if, like in this case, it's peppered with genuine emotion that goes beyond "move your body to the beat". This is an album in the vein of "No More Tears (Enough is Enough)", "Dancing With Tears in My Eyes" or "Dancing on My Own". Where the dancefloor is the therapeutic place to let your darker feelings transform into an escapist fantasy. And like her debut, it does not contain a single ballad (despite Ava Max having the vocal capacity and expressiveness to pull one off). And the reason this works is because through the stomping rhythms, thick layers of synths and sing along hooks (in both chorus and verses, and often additionally pre-choruses), there's always the same emotive power that a ballad would have too. Within the context of the album, the closing song "Dancing's Done" (what a fitting title) already feels like a ballad due to its overly expressive, but not exactly bright tone, and a melody that reminds me of a music box playing, despite clearly being danceable and club ready in its production, just like the rest. Ava Max is not decidedly retro: she's deeply involved in the creation of her songs which historically wasn't always the case with pop singers, has production that very obviously stems from the 2020s (the 80s reminiscents of most songs these days don't really sound like the actual 80s - compare to the sadly still widely unknown Roxi Drive for a modern artist that sounds really 80s) and utilizes the internet as her main source of distribution, as can be seen from the shorter song lengths (probably my only complaint, but the songs still feel finished). But nevertheless, she's as if the idea of an MTV pop star fluently transisted into the internet era. This can be seen by the fact that Ava Max kinda became a mascot for traditional media (her face and name have repeatedly been used in German speaking Europe to promote radio stations, CD compilations, etc.). In what she represents, where her focus lies on and how her songs are composed, she's much more reminiscent of the big pop divas and princesses of past eras, the Christina Aguileras, Britneys, Donna Summers and Kylies of the world than stars like Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, Camila Cabello or even Taylor Swift, but while maintaining a modern sound that's on the pulse of time. As for favorite songs: the singles "Million Dollar Baby" and "Maybe You're The Problem" were among my most listened to songs in 2022 (as numbers 11 and 35, respectively), but I gotta say, now hearing the entire record, they're not even the highlights, which really means something for the other songs. "Sleepwalker", "Cold as Ice", "Weapons", "Diamonds & Dancefloors" and "Dancing's Done" would be my personal top 5 picks. It's hard for me to say whether it's equal to the previous album or better. "Heaven & Hell" is one of the most striking pop debuts there is, and it contained more highly memorable tracks than some best of compilations, but "Diamonds & Dancefloors" is more of a solid unit. What I can definitely say is that despite 2022 having been a strong year for songs, I haven't heard any full album last year that I liked this much as a whole. And I love that like her debut, it's worth having this on a CD. Comes in a jewel case, has the tracklist on the back and has a thick booklet with lyrics and pictures. Oh, how I love having an album on CD and it actually feels like you're getting something genuine, and it's not just the disc thrown into a piece of paper (or a jewel case with no tracklist and a completely blank black booklet, which makes you sour even of the album was one of the best of 2020).

Completely different question: did you happen to hear Loredana's new album "Mann im Haus" (has no physical release so I can't comment on it on a more fitting video)? Like many people, I don't like Loredana's personality and the stuff that she did, but musically she always struck me as someone who has a lot of potential and when she really puts effort into it can release some raw and intense music somewhere between pop and rap, as she did with "Angst" and "Nicht verdient". But her albums were always full of middle of the road filler material and thus never came out that good and always felt like a byproduct to her singles. However, this new album keeps up said raw energy throughout, she actually utilizes her hoarse voice and the production is really good and more adventurous. I get many are unable to find a liking in the personal drama of a person who's infamously a ruthless con artist that shows no guilt whatsoever, but I gotta say this is the first time she released an album that's thoroughly an accomplished unit and makes use of her strengths in addition to having picked awesome beats.
