Our talk in April 2017 was presented by Vasilis Maroulas, Associate at Arup.
Vas states that we are living in an information age where Data is in abundance. In this digital world, we receive so much information and the question is what do we do with it all?
He suggests this abundance of data should lead to
many opportunities. Vas states that good design should be based on knowledge and not on numbers. In this era of variables and parameters, which can be flexed and morphed, he feels that the concept of Parametric Design is often misunderstood, over used or indeed misinterpreted.
Following its genesis, in the late 20th Century, Parametricism was
criticised and marginalised as its artistic & technological endeavour was perceived as not addressing societal need. Vas proposes we are entering an era where we are at risk of de-skilling ourselves, as it is increasingly all about managing data sets and processes. Being immersed in this complexity of information, he will ask have we lost sight of simplicity?
Parametric Design should not only be about a technical response to the challenges posed by architectural creativity. Instead we as an industry, should contribute to societal change, address well-being, and strive for technological efficiencies.
