Avatar 2 and Top Gun 2 should be a lesson on how online chatter and fanboy groups are nearly irrelevant in the talks of box office. So much for everyone saying "no one cares about Avatar."
More important than this is that somehow people do this to every single James Cameron movie. His movie comes out, gets negative critical response, has a mediocre opening, people trash talk it, then it makes a billion dollars.
Thank you for another year of ethical movie journalism and reviewing, I hope there are many more to come ❤ happy new year, Dan, and to Mara and your loved ones too. Best wishes.
Agree with you Dan, I avoided most box office analysis channels except yours for this film. I could see very clearly many had an investment in seeing it fail. I knew not to bet against Cameron, and when I saw the trailer knew it would be a hit as it was bringing elements to theatre we have been missing. I also knew for folks who see only one movie in a theatre a year, this would be the movie. If you're going to pay then pay for an event like experience.
Happy New Year Dan! 🎊 My family and I waited to watch Avatar 2 on New years day, the theater was reasonably packed and when the lights went back up at the end, there was an applause 😊 I'm so happy it's doing well!
@@ingobernoble2678 In 1997, before Titanic's release, various film critics predicted the film would be a significant disappointment at the box office. The word is that no one want to watch overbudgeted romance movie for teenagers, it's very different than 1991 Terminator 2: Judgment Day and even after its releases, it still gets so much criticism for being soap opera and criticizing the lack of interesting emotional elements.
Seemed like everyone in the media wanted this movie to fail, I`m glad it didn`t because I thought a lot of the scenes in this movie had me going wow and whispering to myself that`s amazing! It`s a real work of movie-making art in regards to special effects and to see it in 3d at the theatre I have never seen anything like it
This might seem like a weird comparison, but I have to say - Dan’s videos are so intelligent + entertaining, they’re like the nutritional excellence of broccoli and quinoa with the flavor of truffles. At the end of each video I feel both smarter and satisfied 👍🏻 Edit to add: Happy early birthday! Thanks for all the great content you create!
He just highlighted Avatar, he clicked the drop down menu and then he randomly selected Papyrus. Like a thoughtless child just wandering by a garden yanking leaves along the way.
Happy New Year Dan! As always I like your take, especially how fair you keep everything (even if I don’t always agree) You’re a big source of box office info for me and I appreciate all the hard work you do. Here’s to another year of viewing your opinions
It's nice to see that quality film making is actually getting seen in Avatar. I know plenty of folks who aren't into it and I can respect that, not every thing is for everyone but that movie is for me and I'm glad it looks like the third still makes sense.
Honestly, I never doubted it would do well, but it's exceeding my expectations right now. The pre-release buzz was all positive, but then there was SO MUCH Avatar2 hate going around online the week after the release, that I really feared that would stand in the way of ticket sales.
With the rising interest in/popularity of international animation would you consider doing a Top 10 animated films of the year? I think it would be interesting to see how they all stack up to each other.
After a slight opening underperformance, this movie showed everyone why JC is the box office champ. Avatar 2009 was such an anomaly though and I doubt that Avatar 2 will pass it. That movie just went to certain highs and repeating it is like catching lightning in a bottle
I so appreciate you Dan and glad you called out the unnecessary hate Avatar gets from people who just want to be spiteful. Thanks for sticking to the FACTS.
The Barbara Walters stuff cracks me up because if you look at boomer mainatream media shit it's all "oh she was the greatest journalist and a trailblazer etc." But on new media and social it's like "did you see the interview where she was a bitch to (fill in the blank)" lol
I didn't want Avatar 2 to fail but I really don't want it to become the best selling movie ever like the original. There is nothing special or significant other than that it looks great.
@@randomly_random_0 I just said it wasn't special or significant, never said it was trash. It literally looks amazing but the story is a rehash of the first which is a rehash of other stories. What will people remember about this movie in 50 years besides the CGI? Sorry if I want movies to be more than just good looking
I wonder how much the box office numbers from 2021 and 2022 are affected by the economy. Are people just spending less in the US? The trends look similar, just lessened.
I wonder if Black Panther and Thor got China and Russia release dates If they would have got a billion dollars. I know Doctor Strange would have easily but black Panther would have gotten at least to BP $950. million Thor $900 million Doctor Strange 1.2 billion If these numbers were the case it would be know talks if Marvel trending down No China and Russia release changes that
Crazy! nobody in my circle is even a little curious about this movie. The original was only in my personal zeitgeist the month it came out and then it was long forgotten. I have never felt the need to re-watch the original or care for a sequel. My movie going friends are of the same mind. It was a vehicle for 3D, which quickly became unpopular.
For me its blockbuster cinema at its best. It also courageous filmmaking. Daring to push the medium and take audiences to new ground, in immersive storytelling. Cinema at its core is spectacle, amongst other things and both Avatar films deliver that.
If Avatar was long forgotten, then Avatar 2 would greatly underperform. Avatar 1 made $2.8B with one standalone movie (and not a giant decade long franchise). Obviously, there is great production quality, storytelling and movie magic. Then the sequel comes out over a decade later and still swings it out of the park.
Subscribed! So many jackasses badmouthed Avatar without ever going to see the movie, and repeated the lie that the budget was $2 billion and would flop. LOL. I said it would hit $2 billion+ since day 1.
The discourse about avatar shows how negative people become just to wish for its downfall. Justifying everything so they can make argument of why you shouldn't watch it. It just other people work for this and they indeed pioneering new way to make motion capture and define the effect a movie can give to the audience. This movie is not just movie, but also a showcase of motion capture, vfx and all the work behind the programming. When I see the behind the scene, it's a movie that also use practical effect, it just the setting is not in our world so their costume and props are altered. With all the praise for Top Gun, I felt like the same praise should be given to cameron team because both of the movie do the same for their own preferred use of technology. Avatar is a new franchise, even Harry Potter is older, just created 13 years ago to the public so the dislike is so overwhelming on the internet, especially before the release up to the first week. Another things is how a lot of reviewers is from north america and didn't think that global audience actually want to see Avatar, there are a lot legacy in term of the worldwide recognition and just because the consumer of avatar is mostly normal people and not reviewer, their take feels like unacceptable. I am glad that it's successful.
@@MoviesAndTvShowsAreSubjective Lightstorm Entertainment owns the Avatar IP. Fox, and by extension Disney, only have a distribution deal in place. That is why Disney was able to open the Pandora ride, despite Fox being the one releasing the films.
Step 1: James Cameron makes a big budget movie Step 2: For some reason a handful of people ridicule it before release and proclaim it’s going to bomb Step 3: It opens decently but not biggest of the year causing some to prematurely say it’s in trouble Step 4: The movie has incredible legs and makes a ton of money Lather. Rinse. Repeat.
Sorry it didn't blew me away. It's a visual show and that's it. Plot is weak, those kids are a pointless nuisance. What piss me off the most is how we are as a apecies are protreyed as the biggest cunts in galaxy and want to take away anything. Mankind tech in the setting is more interesting than those blue tree hugging hippys
You forgot to include "Step 5: The nonsensical naysayers backpedal and pronounce that, no actually, they always knew it would do well in the long run. Ignore previous statements!"
@@pandoorapirat8644 And the same happened with Captain Marvel: a lot of whiny right wing adults bet it would flop and even had the audacity to ask people not going to theaters, then the movie join the 1 billion club and the same whiny adults came out with the "Disney bought the tickets" conspiracy bullshit.
@@chavezkainil The Abyss was considered a failure at the time. It did probably set him down the water road of vfx so I see it as a stepping stone. Other than that he is a certified hit maker.
I am very happy to see avatar doing well, I really liked the movie. also thanks Dan for giving us a video despite you being on holiday. You're a hero 👏 🙌
I surprisingly agree with both Sam and Jim. I saw in IMAX 3D in a packed theatre which I really enjoyed, but it also narratively felt like a re-run of Cameron's greatest hits: visual echoes of Terminator, Aliens, Abyss and Titanic as well as re-run of original Avatar themes. But damn, I love he's still pushing the technological envelope. The underwater scenes are gorgeous in 3D
I got tickets for Avatar next week, 10am, IMAX 3D and the auditorium is about 25% full. I waited to ensure I was able to see it in the best screen/format. I'm pretty sure most people there did the same or are seeing it again.
That’s exactly what I did… made sure I was watching the best format available near me… took me two weeks to make the trip because of my schedule and the storm and I finally did. Worth it, James Cameron is that guy!
@@EdwardNygma1980 True Lies just came out on Disney+ (in the UK) ...Weirdly it also got a Blu Ray release over in Spain a while ago due to some legal loophole/technicality over there - English language version is on the disc.

Dan asking that people need to practice some sort media literacy is a mountain too high for most. If its not a click-bait screenshot or title then it's not worth watching and believing.
Doesn't matter if they were wrong. They got their headlines. They got their clicks. You admitted that yourself. Literacy, competency, intergriry and truth will never beat sensationalism. You're fighting a losing battle. At the end of the day, they're not trying to be right or factual. That's not why they're doing it. And the people don't want facts. That's not why they click.
Avatar 2 is the biggest mindfuck of 2022, Reddit wants this movie to fail and with each passing day, the average redditor is damage controlling the success of this movie.
That's a huge generalization. There's an entire subreddit of box office that wants this film to succeed. You're justing picking out what may be a loud minority of people
@@nms7872 The Box-office Sub reddit wants Avatar 2 to succeed. But the Movies Sub reddit which is considerably bigger absolutely hates Avatar 2. To the point that they have banned any mention of Avatar 2. Any post regarding Avatar 2 is deleted and the guy who made the post is usually banned.
I don't think any of us did. What is the draw? It doesn't headline any big movie stars and isn't based on some famous book series, video game, old TV show or comic book. Is it just James Cameron? Aside from Christopher Nolan or Quentin Tarantino, how many other directors have that kind of dependable profitability? It's kind of weird. He just shows up once a decade and strikes gold every time?
I've been trying to watch Avatar in 3D every weekend and it's been sold out in every 3D screen in my area (available only in the non 3D screens). Insane
My prediction until this movie goes into February with Ant-Man coming out is that it will reach $2 billion. I think it has enough legs to get itself there by the time this month ends. There's literally not much in its way at all. Megan is not going to do too much damage to it at all. My original prediction was around 1.5 to 2 billion. Seems like it will do much better than that.🙏
I agree. I chose not to see it opening weekend or over the holidays because I figured it’d be very crowded and I’d rather not have a packed room (for flu and Covid precautions). I imagine there are others who are waiting for their own reasons or want to see it again if they just saw it over New Years.
@@ellicel probably I mean right now seeing the movie is up to personal preference and whether or not you want to see it again. It's opening in every market so it doesn't need that anymore.
Shame it was probably Cameron's worse movie (bar Piranha). I liked part 1. This one is Cameron indulgence and has all the marks of an extremely powerful genius who has gone off track but has nobody to check his balance. 4/10 for me. Technical feat doesn't make a movie and it's so baggy, it could've been done in 90 mins. Worse thing? Without humans, you're watching a giant cut scene from a game and that's what it felt like. Cameron, please stop and spend your talents on something worthy.
I found your channel about half way through 2022. And man you have never disappointed!! I look forward to Charts with Dan every week. Thank you for putting out a video this week. Thank you for all you do!! Happy New Years!!
Hey Dan, I have a request for a chart. Since James Cameron said that Avatar: The Way of Water had to be one of the most successful films of all-time, I'd love to see how it shakes out compared to the top-grossing films when it nears closer to the $2 billion mark.
@@thebatman4279 is there some sort of limit of how many movie people can watch in your area? Where I live it’s quite common for people to go to the movies one weekend and if there’s something else worth watching they go and watch that the following weekend.
I laughing my butt out of all the videos posting that Avatar was going to flop and lose money to Fox, Disney and Cameron and oh boy did they looks sooo foolish now, I will celebrate this week watching the film for the third time, really happy I really wasn't expecting this much this soon.
When the Oscar's hit, usually these awards season films get a second chance at the box office. I think The Fabelmans and The Whale will likely got a box office boost at that time.
Absolutely embarrassing for the market that Glass onion, the movie in limited release for a week, has made more money than Babylon and Fabelmans (at the moment)
@@bolder2009 happy New Year! My gripes are just that the first one wasn't a very compelling story, lacking consolation with indigenous cultures and the sequel mirrored those things. The story in of itself isn't worthy of a lot of scrutiny, but in relation to how pretty it was it the story fell behind, but that's just like, my opinion man.
I'm so glad you explained that 6% increase for Avatar 2. You're right, it's just the way the Christmas holiday period maps out. Though some are using it as clickbait.
@@MrDeone365 Lots of them. Especially if its an increase when seven day earlier was Christmas eve. Movie boxoffices always have big drops on Christmas eve. So one week increases are common.
Saw Puss in Boots in an afternoon showing on Monday and we got the last pair of seat that wasn't row 1. Got it and it was as expected all kids and they all seemed to be loving it. And so did I! Looks like parents used the day off to watch a movie with their kids.
I'm probably not seeing Avatar 2 in theaters. The first one - beyond the 3D and the effects - was largely meh to me. I may have watched it once at home. I'm obviously an outlier but I just don't get the overwhelming love for the material. It's a ton of tropes and painfully cliche characters strung together in a computer. 100 years from now, people will think Avatar was a cultural touchstone that consumed the national imagination for over a decade. But it isn't. I have never heard anyone have a conversation about it in my daily life. It's just spectacle.
Hii Dan, long time fan here I live in Mexico and I recently thought that maybe it could be interesting if the worldwide information could be categorized by region. I don't know if it's posible or if it's too mucho job. Thanks for all the effort and dedication you spend on making this amazing videos!
Today I read a tease about Avatar 3, apparently that movie will portrait "villain Na'vi" that are from the "Fire Tribe"... wait a moment! the first movie was about the Na'vi that rode those fliying creatures (air), now the sequel is about the Na'vi that live in the water (water), and the third one will be about the Na'vi "Ash Tribe"? (fire)... I'm the only one that smells this as stealing the spirit of "Avatar, The Last Air Bender"?. Lets remember that Orion was forced (1986) to settle and acknowledge Harlan Ellison in the prints of "The Terminator" for fear to lose in court against complains of plagearism against James Cameron from Ellison. I would bet we are going to see the Na'vi "Earth Tribe" in Avatar 4.
With your current trend lines I'm curious how much mid level films largely being regulated to streaming or just not being produced at all. It's probably way to much work for just you but it'd be interesting to take those films out of the 2015-2019 line and then see where it lines up. I appreciated an older video where you showed it's likely that megaplexes brought blockbusters to screens and not vice versa.
