I love the difference between Aang and the rest of the avatars. In the avatar state, combined avatar's voice said that "The Fire Lord will pay ultimate price" which means executing him. But when Aang trapped Ozai he stepped out of the state, take Ozai's bending following his own rules even if all his past lives pushed him to finish his enemy.

Exactly. He stuck to his morals. This is why he was able to remove Ozai's bending. "To bend another's energy, your own spirit must be unbendable, or you will be corrupted and destroyed."
