This is by far THE best episode of Epicly Later'd. Coming up during the late 90's/early 2000's skate era was truly magical and I remember receiving the Photosynthesis VHS through a subscription to SLAP mag. I must have worn that video out because I don't know how many times I've watched it back to back, especially AVE's part and the Habitat section. AVE was one of the skater I looked up to because of his powerful, fast skating, along with Donny Barley and John Rattray. So glad to see him doing well and still shredding. God bless you AVE, I hope you keep it going as long as you're able to. I still watch your parts non-stop, and wish I could turn back the time to relive that era once again.

I met AVE at The DC Video premiere in Sydney - I was standing at the bar next to the VIP section when all the team riders started coming in.. It was super busy so they paused for a bit and AVE ended up standing right in front of me.. The dude next to me started fanning out for a bit and when it was time, he turned to keep going but it was still too crowded to move.. He glanced over and I held my beer up - we clinked bottles as the crowd cleared and he made his way through.. Funny thing was, we spotted each other at the after party - just clinked beers again, had a laugh and a nod and kept going - no words needed 😄

Wow, I’m in tears oddly enough watching this because I’ve had the same struggles for a long time. I’m in my thirties and this is the first time I’m actively seeking help and have decided I can’t do this alone anymore. If anyone else is going through this, you’re not alone but u need strength that can only be found in others. Seeking answers outside of our own solitary pride and ego and trying to understand that it’s okay to need help and to get it

No doubt about it, this is the best Epicly Later'd episode to date! AVE's always been so gnarly, but also was like an enigma in the eyes of the skate media. But to hear his whole story, the trials, tribulations and fucking hard fought victories.... and to see where he's at now. Good job!

I’ve spent most of my life skateboarding. He and Dill were part of the elite during those late 90s and some of my favorites. I had no idea about all of this. It was suspected from Dill but I didn’t know anything about AVEs struggles. I’m so glad he decided to share his story. He’s still one of my all time favorites and the main reason my switch crooked is one of my go to weapons. Between him and Andrew Reynolds, Erik Ellington and others all getting sober and still skating to this day is so fucking awesome and inspiring.

“This is what we’re gonna do”…. That part sent some serious chills down my spine. I literally cheered out loud when AVE said it. Keep this sentiment in mind when doing what you love folks

I remember skating with the homie years ago @ LA High one day & some of the FA team where there skating including AVE & it tripped me out to see them all skating there having a normal sesh. I’ll never forget that day…

every single epicly later'd is fantastic... Patrick has curated probably the best set of Skateboarders to feature in his documentaries. The Documentaries themselves are just incredibly well put together... Cheers to them for knocking it out of the park yet again.

Damn this was a good one. So sick and inspirational. The gnarly skating, the substance abuse to sobriety…just an epic life that we can all learn some valuable lessons from. Super admirable.

I met Anthony in 2008 or ‘09 in Albuquerque, he was very nice. I have more respect for him now knowing what he’s been through and coming out clean, sober, and stronger. Definitely one of my favorites. Good style, good tricks, still ripping!

People in the skate world dont realize that some of the best skating was done on speed. Hosoi doing 9 foot high airs 4 feet higher than anyone else on a shitty board? It was pervasive in the 80-90s. Different times.

I actually got a Dylan FA board a year before I quit drinking. I didn’t start riding it until I was a few months clean and then about a month later Dylan passed. I’ve been riding FA/ Hockey boards ever since

Side note, when kalis 360 flipped the trash can, the 4 people on the ledge are my friend Greg, Jim and i with Ryan Gee i believe taking the picture that would end up on Kalis first pro shoebox art for dc. That was such a fun day, I'll never forget it, also AVE and some of the 23 crew came to an indoor park in nj a very long time ago. Ave was doing switch 360 flips on a steep ass bank with cornrows . Another memory I'll never forget.

Man when I was younger, I rode my boards till the wheel fell off , I started drinking then doing drugs , I started getting bad real bad , I ventured off riding my board with the same group of guys that did what I did , then one day I left my board in a friends car , he was like here Bro , here is your board , I said naw you keep it “ it was a Eric Dressen from Dogtown” I knew right then and there I would never ride again cause my addiction got me bad , as I got older I still keep up with skateboarding , and at times I’m in tears cause when I rode my board I can honestly say that was the only time I felt FREE🙏🏽💪🏽💯

Dude is a beast great episode. As a skater in my late 40s it's amazing to see the level he still rides at, very inspiring

as a dude in his early 30s I find these older skater dudes so inspiring . I always have. I ride mountain bikes. but still think these cool older guys who still do what they love and have families . so sick.

GOD BLESS YOU AVE!!!! I loved his story and it really deep down resonated with me because I've personally been sober for a little over a year now and I did it for the sake of my kids.. I realized that drinking for me was my way to cover up the traumatic experiences and emotions that I had buried deep within myself not realizing that all of these years I was only running from myself this whole entire time.. My 3 amazing kids gave me the motivation to kick it because they deserve at least one sober parent, their mother drinks like a damn fish and it's not okay for both of us waking up hungover and not able to tend to the kids.. Other than that I grew up skateboarding and it's my first love and the DC Video was the first time AVE got on my radar, it was one of the sickest parts I've ever seen of someone doing soo many switch tricks on stuff as a kid!! I can't skate anymore because I have a bad leg so I tend to get my fill now from watching these Epicly Later'd episodes and Thrashers Channel to keep up with the skate news like when I read Transworld Mags to see who did what when I was a teenager.. Anyways thank you VICE for Epicly Later'd & all of these amazing documentaries of our favorite skaters!!! A.V.E. I hope you see this one day brother because you're truly a Legend & an inspiration to me since The DC Video & even now as I'm almost 32!!! 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿💯💯💯💯

In my experience, skateboarding is that perfect little feeling that everybody needs at one point in their life. Whether you’re crap at it, get really good at it, end up doing it as a career or just moving on to being a respectful spectator. It still holds a special place in all of us. All of us separated by thousands of miles, taste in music, moral compass, fashion style, political opinions, age, financial class, literally anything and everything separates us all but we all have this thing that we held on to and gives us joy and also unites all of us. For all the crap we’ve all put up with from people outside of the circle, it’s nice to feel such a sense of undying community in a sport that’s designed to be done solo. Love to all the skateboard family! 👊
