This is definitely their Magnum Opus. The music is next level, and the lyrics and vocal delivery are so powerful, always get a lump in my throat when I listen to this one. Only thing I dislike about it is that they will never top it (even though they came close with Exist).
Fun fact, The Rev(original drummer) wrote most of this song before he died and the ending…”tonight we all die young” was supposed to be the chorus but the band thought it would unbalance the song to have that be the chorus but they knew that wanted to use it so instead they added it to the end of the song.
The Rev had the entire album recorded before he died. They were rough files but they were all there. The band reached out to Portnoy who's son is a big fan of The Rev and the band. He agreed to record in studio once they had decided to finish the album for Jimmy and his family and of course, the fans. Jimmy was a massive fan of Dream Theater and Mike Portnoy was one of his heroes so for him to lend his talent is a big deal to the band. I visited his grave, said my goodbyes to him officially. It was nice. RIP Jimmy.
wrong, the band did an interview in later years where they clearly explained the writing of Save Me was nowhere near complete and they had to put together the pieces of a bit of a mess to complete the song after the Rev's passing, Mike Portnoy recorded the drumming
@@martinarscott3524 Wrong. Jimmy had already worked on "Save Me" and everything else. Portnoy added a ton of stuff to fill in but the skeleton of the entire album was already recorded on an electronic kit at the Rev's house in Huntington Beach. I recall them about to record the album that was to be 'Nightmare' before he died. So, fuck off my post before you try and call me out. Know what you're talking about bum.
Also important to note that the drummer in this recording is Mike Portnoy (ex Dream Theater) and he helped the band record the whole album following the passing of Jimmy ‘The Rev’ Sullivan
SO many incredible songs to check out from these guys. I would 100% go to their City of Evil and Waking the Fallen albums. The Wicked End and Second Heartbeat are definitely ones to check out from those!
Thank you so much for reacting to this! This is the track that really got me into progressive music and paved the way for a lot of my music taste. I'm happy to support y'all and absolutely stoked to get a coveted GAME OVER on my first suggestion!!!
Gates is such a good guitarist that Matt (vocals) often jokes if he hits a wrong note or bends too far live, even though it's usually something you'd never even notice, he'll be like "That's the reminder that Symyster Gates is a human being".
Buried Alive, Hail to the King, Seize the Day, Critical Acclaim, Beast and the Harlot, Bat Country, Nightmare, and Afterlife. Just to name a few of a7x bangers you haven’t heard yet
This song was a tribute to their legendary late drummer Jimmy The Rev Sullivan. He made most of their songs even for this album but Portnoy had to step in to record the actual album cause Jimmy died. Last song the Rev wrote was Fiction and he handed it in 3 days before he passed. Its a kind of a good bye letter to say the least. Definitely check that out and their LBC concert which is ideal for you to understand why this is such a beloved band. Critical Acclaim, Afterlife, Unholy Confessions, Chapter 4, A Little Piece of Heaven (their personal Bohemian Rapsody), Almost easy, the Stage, Exist, Acid Rain, So Far Away the official video is also a tribute to the Rev. He was a musical genius (they all are) and the glue of this band. They all grew up together and they ve been creating some real magic for more than 20 years. Welcome to the Family guys. You opened Pandora's box.
The drummer that is playing on this song is name Mike Portnoy. He played with dream theater the drummer that wrote this song his name was Jimmy The Rev Sullivan and unfortunately he passed away before they got a chance to record this album.
If you like drums you should 100% watch Alex Bents "Sever The Hand" playthrough. He's the actual drummer of Trivium but he's so good you'd think he's a robot. The best part is he plays the actual song along with it so you still get to hear the song
I think you would enjoy Sidewinder. And if you want to hear what it feels like to return from war....I recommend MIA I do not know how they came up with the lyrics for that song... but My son showed it to me, and we both being vets of wars, respectively Desert Storm, and my son served in Syria and Iraq Operation Inherent Resolve. we were in tears by the end.
u have to check out thier live performance back in 2008 Live in LBC, it's aknowledged to be thier best live show, couple os great songs from that live are: critical acclaim afterlife second heartbeat almost easy
Great reaction guys congratulations. I leave some suggestions from Avenged Sevenfold Critical acclaim (Live Lbc) a little piece of heaven Danger Line Nightmare hail to the king MIA natural born killer The Stage
Stellar song from a great band, they have so much good material over the years, band gets far too much hate just because they got super famous. Nice reaction guys.
Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater was the drummer for this album, the first after their founding member and drummer Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan passed away. There is so much more for you to check out from them, especially from this album and earlier on
This song is part of what I believe is one of the 5 stages of grief, they have several songs that are tributes to Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan I believe. This one I personally think is anger, blaming themselves and wondering what they did to lose their best friend.
i think god hates us is the anger and save me as the depression then nightmare as the shock and denial then buried alive is the pain and guilt. fiction is whell obvsly the hope and acceptance
@@Tumpzu I'm not 100% sure on any of them tbh. I think Victim is also a song that I think is one of the 5 stages. I don't think Buried Alive is. The 5 I'm thinking of are So Far Away, Victim, Fiction, Save Me and God Hates Us. But everyone has their own interpretation of every song of course. But you could be right. It's probably Victim- denial, God Hates Us- anger, So Far Away is- depression, Fiction- acceptance and Save Me- bargaining.
I really really like the fact the you guys liked Nobody. It caused a pretty big divide among the fan base cause it was such a different sound that everyone was used to especially for being the single for a new album since basically The Stage’s full album surprise release in 2016 so I’m really glad you guys enjoyed it I definitely recommend exploring their new album for sure. But the fact you guys jumped straight into Save Me as y’alls second song by them also makes me really happy because it’s arguably their best song of all time at least in my opinion. Anyways I really enjoyed the video!
Their original drummer wrote this song, as a demo. He passed away a year before this album came out. Mike portnoy ex dream came in and finished the drums for the album and toured with them for a year.
This is easily what i consider the biggest overall masterpiece in consideration of what each musician brings to the table and the heartwarming tribute Portnoy paid the Rev in this piece. Love watching others react to what i've long considered the greatest 10 mins in music.
I don't listen to a7x that much anymore, bu they're a big reason i found my favourite genre of music (prog rock and prog metal). This song is a masterpiece and one of the few songs of theirs i still come back to.
Mike Portnoy is a world class drummer known for his complex and tight playing, especially using high hat fillers for simple beats. He was founding member of prog-metal legends Dream Theater, which he and two fellow musicians founded at the age of 18 back in '85, when they were all attending Berklee Music College. He left Dream Theater for good in '09 to help out A7X finish this record. As much as I respect his choice of leaving, he left DT in shambles and they were never really the same without him...
Such a long but amazing song. There's so much to breakdown in it. From the same album the song "So Far Away" gets to me everyone 😢 lol... I got to see A7X in 2018 for the 1st time and it was the best gig I've been to. Hope they come back to Scotland with this new album.
This album "nightmare" was written in pain of the loss of Jimmy "the Rev" Sullivan. You can hear it in every song, the pain, loss, confusion. I sae them live and they still use Jimmy's voice as backing vocals for some songs 🥲❤️
This was my favorite song from Avenged for quite a while until I listened to Exist. It's a longer track than Save Me (their longest track to date), but I hope you get around to reacting to it because it is most definitely a banger of a tune.
Talking about good emotional and heavy metal, this is up there.. A7X is much more then what youve seen yet, they also got diffrent style of songs, the early stuff is diffrent, as well as the real ballads, and yes the agressive, the emotional, the take on sociaty, and yes really diverse actually.
It would be cool of you guys did Katatonia, starting with song My Twin. They are not like anything you have done before and they have a connection to Opeth, signers are best friends.
