@philipocallaghan 1 second ago THE SUN IS LOW..........trigger words programmed into Banner a bit like the WINTER SOLDIER...... taken from THE MANCUNIAN CANDIDATE or THE BOURNE IDENTITY , a famously cold war brainwashing method.
I like Batman, but not so much that I’m willing to spend what I imagine that set costs. It is a tempting and well placed ad though. If they do an X-Men or Avengers set, that might be different
The Blacklist REALLY solidifies James Spader as SUCH a Loveable Villain 😂🤷🏽❤️ Which is why im such a fan of him as Ultron, with Motion Capture as well.
@@rogerroger5171 Robert Downey Jr. has worked with James Spader a couple of times before in the 80's .. Less Than Zero, and Tuff Turf. The latter is my fav of the two.
Idk if Scarlett Johansson gets enough credit for that Nat confession scene to Bruce about her “procedure”. So vulnerable, yet realistic. She played it beautifully. Chokes me up every time. 👏🏾 PS. “Suns getting real low” is just a key phrase, almost a signal to signify their routine, like a “safe word” 😅haha
Not the first time Spader & RDJ were on opposite sides in a movie. Back in the 80s they were in a movie called ‘Less Than Zero’ & Spader was DownyJr nemesis.
I always found it weird when they try and explain that hulk and banner are 2 different ppl. But really..its just one. Hes one and the same. Whether the hulk form or human form.
@youtmeme yes, but he has dissociative identity disorder with at least two distinct personalities and they resent each other like two separate beings and often refer to the other like they are a different being
@@youtmeme It's more complicated than just saying he is 1 or 2 people. Dissociative identity disorder, is like taking a vase and breaking it. They are distinct separate pieces, but those pieces are still part of a larger whole. Bruce banner was abused as a child, so he repressed some of his most basic human behavior. He repressed his anger, he repressed his confidence. And those manifested as a different personality that was unleashed in physical form after his nuclear accident.
Cap’s fear in a sense IS going home: Cap is a soldier... Cap is THE soldier. He cannot live without a war to fight; his sense of Justice and need to protect the little guy is too strong; he can’t stop himself but to step up to the plate. So, ironically, imagining a world where there is no threat, where there is no war, is terrifying to him. What would he do? Especially since, as you said: He LOST PEGGY! She was the only thing he could have hung up the Shield for and now he does not have that (Ultron even calls him out on it when he says to him: “God's righteous man… pretending you could live without a war”) So that is the fear he saw in his vision: Peggy telling him “The war is over, Steve: We can go home!” and then the room being empty of people because Steve knows Peggy is dead and he has no one to go home to...!
An interesting take. My take was that he fears giving in to the temptation of an easy life. From the very beginning, he has been told that he ought to take the easier road and give up by every single character except Peggy. He fears that that will make him less of a person. It is only at the end that he conquers that fear, and has his own “you can rest now, we’re going to be okay “ style moment.
To me of all the dialog between Nat and Bruce the line, it makes everything easier even killing, really hits home why Nat thinks she is a monster. Also Bruce thinking that of himself is like yeah totally fair.
james spader is the voice of ultron. i've been yelling it out louder and louder every time she asks, but she can't hear me. i think that my neighbors might believe that i'm having an episode. he and william shatner together on boston legal, those were some of the best scenes ever on tv. i dare you, any of you, shanelle included, to watch that show and tell me that i'm wrong.
A few points I'd like to make: 1. It weren't suits who attacked, its the 'Iron Legion', bots made with basically the same tech as Tony's suits 2. Wanda showed them their worst nightmares, that includes things that happened already, like with Black Widow 3. Hulk and Bruce are TWO personalities, they share a lot but when Hulk runs away it's not Bruce's descision. 4. Calming down Hulk to make him transform back to Bruce is a mental conditioning thing, it's triggered by key words and sensations (touch) 5. In the end Wanda ripped out the 'heart' of ONE bot, the one escaped is of course another one, but they are all Legion Love those reactions, can't wait to see what Infinity War and Endgame will do to you ...
@@spencernaugle As said, Hulk and Bruce share a lot, different personalities but not completely seperated, so the conditioning is done more on Bruce's side.
For the record, the infighting in The Avengers, wasn't JUST because of the scepter. The feelings they had that they fought about were real things they felt/thought. The scepter intensified them all bringing it all out.
I think people came around to it, with the ability of hindsight. People hated it back then, cause they felt it didn't stand on its own. But it wasn't necessarily meant to. It was moreso meant to set up what was still to come. I wish we could've had *MORE* Ultron, and the whole "Age" of Ultron last longer...but I otherwise love this movie
@@AscendedXSaiyan Yeah, it was more like "Week of Ultron". That's one overall complaint about the MCU - and often other superhero movies - that long-running villains in the comics are shown in one movie, and then killed off, never to be seen again.
Ultron is James Spader. You might recognize him from The Blacklist or when he was younger in a bunch of 80s moves like Pretty in Pink or later in Stargate the movie
2:37 Like any well-written story, it's more complicated than 1 simple reason. The avengers personalities already were in conflict, and the scepter was tapping into that conflict and making it worse.
I love watching these movies again as an adult and picking up all the themes and little details. Like how Ultron is Tony's "son" so Ultron takes on Tony's habits like wanting to save the planet or constantly upgrading his equipment.
Oh MAN! I really hope you like this one!! It got a lot of flack upon release, but in retrospect I really think it does a huge amount in furthering the story of the MCU. And the vocal/acting performances from both Paul Bettany and James Spader are absolutely perfect for their respective roles. Can't wait to see what you think!!
I’d never looked into any of the behind the scenes stuff for this movie. I wouldn’t have ever guessed Spader was actually on set as Ultron. I always assumed it was voice over.
We are almost in the 3rd Act of The Infinity Saga! And the first movie of Phase 3 makes Age of Ultron even better by consequence. But first... Paul Rudd!
Thanks again for watching all of these. I Love your Marvel reactions. This is actually my favorite of all the Marvel movies! I like the dialogue, the direction, & the attention to the civilian bystanders.
It is not a coincidence that Whedon is the one they use for the avengers movies. Very few directors and writers can do ensamble like he can. Buffy. Firefly. Avengers.
35:49 I very recently realized that Thor has had NO ONE in his life to actively compare how one holds Mjoilnir to Thors fighting style 😢 So when Vision comes up n is basically like “Yo, youre’ weapon is Kiiiinda Op” Thor stays the HH(HumbleHimbo) he is 😂❤”Naw its just Practical in Comabt, ya know?” 🤣🤣🤷🏽🫶
I understand we get tired of the things we do every time, but I like your intro. Very clear knowing you stand as the BFF and resident movie watching pal. Gets me right away to know exactly what I'm getting into with your reactions.
"Sun's getting real low" - that whole thing is Black Widow's lullaby for Hulk. Basically trigger words to put Hulk to sleep and force him to transform back into Banner. The important thing to understand is that Bruce Banner and the Hulk are NOT the same guy. Banner doesn't like Hulk, and Hulk doesn't like Banner, and Hulk HATES being trapped in Banner and not being able to be Hulk. Rejecting Black Widow at the end and flying off in the Quinjet is because Hulk doesn't want to be turned back into Banner.
When it came out this fell a little flat for a number of people. After the first Avengers , GotG and the winter soldier expectations were sky high. I personally liked it and I feel like it's become more respected over time. There are a lot of little things that pay off in later stuff sprinkled in this one.
The reason Natasha tells Bruce not to turn green in the chaos of the Stark tower party is that The Hulk isn't very good at directing the rage. He just SMASHES! He would tear the tower apart. In the first Avenger movie, when Hulk first appears (morphs) on the helicarrier it is not a good thing. Maria Hill warns Fury that "The Hulk will tear this place apart" Which is Loki's plan and The Hulk almost does just that. Only stopping because he jumped out onto the fighter jet. BTW, in the comics, Ultron is much more formidable. But I get it, we got other big baddies ahead. Thanos is a beast!!!
I think at the time many of us were kinda let down by this movie because we expected some sort of big climax like Avengers 1, but bigger, based on where it was in the timeline and the momentum. Also a lot of the "Phase 2" movies were starting to set a MCU specific tone, that would become iconic by the end of Phase 3, but this movie felt a lot more like a Phase 1 movie in ways. All that being said, in hindsight it works a hell of a lot better as a transitional chapter with a lot of set up than it did trying to bear the weight of expectations at the time. I think a lot of people who were disappointed by it initially actually think more fondly of it now than they originally did, if they've revisited it.
-Natasha's vision showed her haunted memories of her past. -Thor's vision was just like Tony's at the beginning where he saw his world's destruction and everyone he loved dead -Cap's vision was taunting him by showing him the life he never got to have had he returned from the war instead of going in the ice As far as some background on the twins.... In the comics, Wanda and Pietro are part of the X-Men universe. They're not just mutants, but more specifically, they're the biological children of X-Men supervillain Magneto. Now as far as the movies go, the rights to all X-Men characters were owned by 20th Century Fox. Until Disney bought Fox in 2019, all X-Men movies were produced under Fox Studios. Now regarding this movie, director Joss Whedon fought for permission from Fox to allow him to use the X-Men characters of Pietro and Wanda. Fox granted him the rights but there were conditions. They weren't allowed to use the code names of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, and they weren't allowed to refer to them as "mutants". "Mutant" is a comic book term that universally refers to characters in the X-Men world-both heroes and villains. So the term "mutant" was off the table. Instead, the twins were constantly referred to as "enhanced". Also also, being that their comic book father Magneto wouldn't be a part of the MCU, they had to change the family history of the twins and instead made their parents simple Sokovian civilians rather than having a genocidal maniac for a father.
I really enjoy this movie. Definitely underrated in the MCU. Super rich in character development, resources are really explored, it has everything. Chillin on the couch after party at 4am, to global extinction.
When Pietro says, "You didn't see that coming," right as he dies, it was a very meta line. It had been leaked that a protagonist, possibly an avenger, would die in this movie. All of the clues throughout the movie pointed to the idea that it would be Clint Barton. Right at the moment that you thought it was finally going to happen and Clint was about to die, Pietro jumps in and ends up being the one to die. It was very surprising. I'm sure others will go into explaining why they had to kill him off so I'm not going to get into that now, but it's something that would be helpful to know for somebody who wasn't watching this movie when it came out and following all of the gossip around it.
I figure a speedster would make the fight against thanos and other threats simpler. Since most marvel threats could be ended/avoided if someone was fast enough. Which is why dc has to up the antie since they have a few speedsters on hand.
@fireeaglefitnessmartialart935 Looking through the comments, I don't see anybody else bringing it up, so I will explain it briefly. At this time, Fox owned the rights to anything related to mutants or the X-Men. Wanda and Pietro had been part of both the Avengers and the x-men. Both franchises wanted to use the characters at about the same time, and they were working out the legalities of it. Fox would exclusively reserve the right to use the titles Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. They agreed that they would each use both characters in one movie but that the MCU would be able to continue using Wanda, and the fox X-Men Universe would be able to continue using Quicksilver. This is why Pietro had to be killed off and could not continue in the MCU. What you said might have some bearing on why they ended up with Wanda instead of Pietro, I'm not sure, but this is the story on why they couldn't keep both.
The fact that people regard this as the 'weakest' Avengers movie shows just how good the overall quality is. There's a lot to like even if it is a bit of retread of the first movie and it could be more accurately called 'Weekend of Ultron'.
I never understood why people hated on this movie. I love the first Avengers movie but this one is the one I prefer to watch. I think it just gives me Buffy vibes more!
I never got it either. A hardcore comic nerd tried to explain to me that they changed too much from the comics it was based on but that happens all the damn time when adapting movies from other materials. I thought it was great. I'm not sure I think it was better than the first movie but it certainly didn't deserve a lot of the hate it got.
I think people didn't like that ultron wasn't made by antman, the original creator of the character, and he wasn't even in the movie at all. I was aware of that, but wasn't enough to swade me personally.
@@ashleighelizabeth5916 As one of those fans, my issue was that they took an epic dimensional and timeline hopping story and just did basic fights with Ultron. The film was good for what it was. They just squandered a story on the level of "Endgame" for it. The "Age of Ultron" comics would be well suited for a series of movies involving not only the Avengers but the X-Men and tons of other characters we haven't seen on screen yet.
I feel like this movie is an 8/10, but imo the other avengers movies are 9s and 10s so this is somehow my least favourite avengers movie, but its still amazing, i always love bruce saying 'go ahead piss me off'
The sponsored service doesn’t actually list the full price for the eventual collection anywhere on their site, which I think is a very anti-consumer practice. So I made a spreadsheet of the fluctuating subscription cost (they did not make this easy) and the full collection will cost $2,867.61 over the course of 48 monthly payments. Average payment is around $63.26.
I knew he did the voice of Ultron, but I didn't realize that Jame Spader actually did any physical acting in this. Always thought it was a wholly CGI character.
@@The_RedVIII That's exactly it, though. Veronica is the opposite of Betty in archie comics, just like veronica is designed to take down hulk, where Betty is his girlfriend
Cap is easily my favorite, Steve is the leader of the Avengers, but since RDJ (and Jon) are the reasons the MCU became as big as it did Tony is always in a big spotlight. Deservedly so!
This isn't many people's "favorite" Avengers movie, but it is my favorite. The justification is a bit spoiler-ish though. It's all cream of the crop from here on through Endgame.
A lot of great things happened in this movie that really moved the overall story forward. Terrific to see the updated lineup for the Avengers! James Spader was a perfect choice to do the voice of Ultron.
In the Marvel Universe as the whole there’s different levels of population. The Avengers represent worldwide threats. The Guardians of the Galaxy represents the galaxy threats. If you get into the Netflix shows then you’ll get what is called the street level threats.
19:25 the thing about the team is that they all have the *same* fear- that they have no place in the world, because they’re monsters. Widow was trained and mutilated to kill. Thor is a “destroyer.” Steve can only function in wartime. Hulk is…Hulk. And Tony thinks the world will end if he doesn’t work fast enough to stop it. Their belief in their own monstrosity unites them.
Banner/Hulk wants to run away because he doesn't believe he can control himself from hurting innocent people. You know, that whole fight scene in the city with "Veronica"? (Iron Man in a giant suit)
There was a little bit of an outrage surrounding one scene of this movie. In that scene where Nat and Bruce are talking and she's mentioning her sterilization procedure a lot of people took issue because she labels herself a monster after explaining that procedure. People took that to mean she thinks of herself as a monster because she is sterile. I personally didn't take it that away. I took it as her past as a russian agent is what she thinks made her a monster and when she talked about the procedure she was explaining it as something done to her to make her more effective with violence. She's comparing that procedure to the procedure that resulted in Banner becoming the Hulk. While Banner experimented on himself the result wasn't intended to happen and it turned him into the Hulk against his will She isn't saying she's a monster because she can't have children. She's a monster because things were ripped from her to make her effective at killing. I could be wrong about my take and if I am then I accept that but it think it all comes down to Whedon placing the monster line after Nat explained her sterilization procedure which wasn't the best place to put it. Maybe have Nat say, "they ripped these things from me to turn me into a killer against my will. Still think you're the only monster?" Or maybe have Banner refer to himself as Frankenstein's monster which is more of an apt comparison than a generalized monster.
My main beef with this movie is that it's just wrong. You won't get an extinction level event from something pulled by earths gravity. Objects travelling at that speed is pulled by the sun
Your reaction has made me appreciate this movie more. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen it and it’s a lot better than I remember it when compared to, well, we’ll just say films of today.
I hope she watched the X-Men movies and the Logan movie when it happens because we we want her to watch Deadpool and Wolverine when it comes out in streaming
Which one? I guess my feeling is that if you're going to do Star Trek, you might as well start with a handful of episodes of TOS and then watch the Captain Kirk movies.
@@UTU49 She don't have to watch everything! Maybe: top ten Classic episodes = Star Trek 1 to 6 = top twenty "The Next Generation" episodes = Star Trek 7 to 10 = the three J.J. Abrams Star Trek movies? ✌️
@@martinbraun1211 Yeah. I was thinking maybe just 3 - 5 episodes of Old Trek and then go straight to the movies. I really liked Star Trek 2, 3, & 4. I haven't seen them in years, though.
You have to remember, Banner and Hulk are two separate identities. They work independently of each other. One doesn't know what the other is doing when the other is in control of the body....
Excelsior. That was Stan’s sign off word When he was the editor of Marvel comics and he had a column every month, we talked about the latest stuff he would sign off with that word we all loved him for that so him saying it here is super Duper fan service
38:49 Couple of things that may explain it: Bruce probably was tired of always turning into the hulk, especially against his will. He said he didnt want to turn but natasha threw him and forced it upon him. Like imagine several years of loki, natasha, wanda etc just forcing u to be in mental pain and having to live with the consequences because of the destruction u caused against ur wishes. Hes also already expressed the possibility of stopping the hero journey regardless, even as a doctor, because even though he couldnt have kids, he still was close to running away with natasha and ending his time as an avenger. And clint wanted to retire, tony was debating whether to stop and build on his home life, and maybe bruce wanted to retire aswell
While I typically always prefer release order, I personally very much recommend watching Black Widow’s movie after Civil War, which is where it begins in the timeline. Just DO NOT watch the second end credit (the mid credit is fine) until you get to the movie’s release order.
Big agree. And Honestly I don’t think that end credit is a big deal; Nick Fury has one of those at the end of Winter Soldier, it could just be seen as good spy strategy. And if she did it early enough, by the time it became relevant it would not be top of mind.
Shanelle: "Fighting demons, everyone in this movie". The comic book genre, specifically Marvel, is built on the classic Greek literature concept of "the flawed hero". The hero not only has to overcome the bad guy, but also his or her self.
"I'm so bored of my intro, you guys." Fun fact: the piano player on Mister Rogers' Neighborhood was an unbelievably talented jazz pianist named Johnny Costa, who initially resisted Fred Rogers' offer to be the musical director for the show, as he felt it would get old really quick. He finally agreed, as long as Rogers promised him he would never use recycled intro music that got old. Mister Rogers wanted him on the show so badly that he agreed he could play the intro song live on set for every single episode--which he eventually did. Mister Rogers had to sing that song almost 900 times, never recycling the audio once, and Johnny Costa improvised his arrangement of the song every time, and never played it exactly the same way twice. Not sure how this turns into advice. Maybe you just need a catchy intro song? :) You always have a guitar behind you, that only comes out for a couple of the livestreams, and I'm getting such a "Chekhov's gun" vibe from you having it in the shot all this time.
Age of Ultron is widely underrated, I think. I like the character moments and development throughout the film, I like Nat/Banner (which I think is a pretty unpopular take), I enjoyed the writing. Much better than it’s usually given credit for. Glad you enjoyed it!
