Roger Barth - I was reading about the industry projections today and they’re now saying that Avengers Endgame will NOT catch Star Wars: The Force Awakens for the #1 All Time Domestic Boxoffice record. How is this even remotely possible? It was the biggest domestic opening by a mile at $357 million (way more than Star Wars’ $247 million) and it’s an awesome movie. How on earth does this happen? Are they wrong?

Not just less competition and much weaker competition, but winter holiday weekdays are much busier because kids are out of school and a lot of adults are also on vacation, especially the few days before Christmas up until the new year, so whatever lead Endgame had during the first weekend was already gone by the end of the second full week.

"Don't meet initial projections"? Its highest possible initial projections for opening weekend were $310M domestic and $900M worldwide for a theatrical run-end total of $2.2-2.6B. It not only shattered the opening projections but also passed the predicted total range in a month. I think one thing they don’t realize is Endgame is a very conclusive film. It’s basically the end of these major arcs. The Force awakens had that rewatch ability to see things you may have missed the first time. Also to see what is being set up for future films, it was pretty exciting! Most of the excitement of Endgame is how they pull off this one major task. Once you see it, there isn’t much to see a second time around. The domestic record will stand firm for a long time to come.. I agree with a lot of people here that it's more about the worldwide title. That being said although it would be cool to see Endgame take the #1 spot, realistically I believe that if it does happen that it'll be by a hair. James Cameron will push for a re release of Avatar leading into Avatar 2, and it will make some money possibly taking that spot back.. well see how it shapes up. Honestly, yeah it's a cool thought.. but I'm appreciating the bigger picture of what Kevin Fiege and his team at Marvel pulled off. Regardless of what happens afterwards; This 22 film arc (now termed infinity sega) is quite possibly the greatest presentation of world/franchise building in cinematic history; That is something that can never be taken away from them. A truly amazing achievement.

Endgame was in 500 more theaters than The Force Awakens. Not screens, theaters. If you assume those theaters are showing it on 2 screens on average (which is probably lowballing), that's 1,000 extra screens on which Endgame is showing 4 times a day, as RMB said. Those 4,000+ daily showings would help make up the one extra screening TFA would make.

I think the length of Endgame turned off some casual movie goers. Say if it was a regular 100 minute movie and I was a casual viewer who didnt care about the franchise and comics, I would see it but 3 hours will be too much for me. I think they lose a small amount of viewers for that reason.

The reason America is important is because worldwide box office between movie to movie is not always a one to one comparison. Some movies don’t open in certain markets and some movies are made for particular markets. Like you can’t compare worldwide opening weekend for a movie because a movie might not open the same weekend in every country every time. The only constant market is the US market

Here is my theory. Since Endgame is the culmination of a 22 film saga most people either wanted to see it ASAP or had little to no interest. Since The Force Awakens was a new story, it was more attractive to casual viewers. These viewers would not need to rush to see it, hence the film making more in the long run.

Force awakens have the advange of having older audience people who saw the OG star wars in their 20's or 30's are in 60's and 70's. Normally 60,70 year olds are not interested in superhero movies also christmas and newyear holidays

Considering that a very decent looking bootleg copy of Avengers: Endgame (presumably from Asia) had hit all the movie pirating websites within days of the movie's theatrical release, it's amazing that Endgame was able to make as much as it did in the box office. Without piracy, the movie would have definitely surpassed 3 billion worldwide by now.

Daamit, why are so many people shitting on AVENGERS 4 not becoming the #1 movie of all time, hello, it has only been one month, and it as $2-264 billion. It will stay in cinemas well into the summer, and surely, making like $2 or 3 million a day would be enough to knock Avatar off by the time it finishes its run in cinemas, also for the memorial day weekend, it should get some good money. Can you imagine if it get a rerelease at some point in the future with extra scenes, people will flock to the theaters again.

When they started to talk about the 3 hour runtime and how it affected box office my brain started to bleed. Glad John remained logical lol Like John said, the 3 hour runtime limitation only matters when all the existing showings are full, which clearly doesn't apply to the 2nd, 3rd and 4th week.

John is making an overall point, but Robert's point is also valid. Let's not forget John's logic fell short of how big the opening of Endgame would be cause he didn't consider the 'greed' of cinema operators knocking other movies off their showtime to put Endgame which was how that movies got the massive amount of screens it did. Love John and his show his logic is not always business savvy but it is plausible.
@rog9278
@rog9278 5 лет назад
Not sure how you are supporting Robert's point... He is saying the 3 hour runtime really hurt Endgame's box office and that's why it is lower than Force Awakens. However, in reality the 3 hour runtime did not have that big of an impact. During the opening weekend theaters were squeezing out other movies and staying open for 72 hours, which should more than make up for the lost showings due to a longer runtime, as reflected by the box office number as well. During subsequent weeks the runtime limitation matters even less and less, since there are more and more empty seats in most showings.
@rog9278
@rog9278 5 лет назад
@@tjislost I am not sure I agree. The movie theaters still generally schedule at least one morning, one afternoon and one evening showings, which should satisfy majority of people's needs. None of the showings are selling out anymore, which means there are about 10-15 readily available time slots to pick from during a single weekend. I find it hard to believe that none of these 10-15 slots fit people's schedules... The 2.5 hour vs 3 hour theory doesn't make much sense to me either. 3 hours only sound scary, but it's only 30 more minutes compared to a 2.5 hour typical movie. If that extra 30 minutes really sways people's decision, then in my opinion these people don't "really" want to see the movie that bad.
@OlJackBurton
@OlJackBurton 5 лет назад
@@rog9278 When all is said and done, Endgame will have made less than 10% less than The Force Awakens. But it's over 20% longer and currently has about 20% less screenings. Even less than when you consider that there is more competition from other studios that have guarantees from the theaters to have a certain amount of screenings dedicated during the first week, as well as the more expensive premium format screenings which often have ticket prices that are over 20% more expensive. So it's already losing those screens and has less showtimes for the cheaper screens. It doesn't matter if those showings aren't selling out, because there are less options. The Force Awakens wasn't selling out its later showings either, but 30% of 5 showings is more than 30% of 4 showings. It's also harder to fit a nearly 4 hour slot (factoring trailers, buying tickets/concessions and transportation/parking) in your schedule vs a little over 3 hour slot (for a more typical movie). If a movie starts at or after 7pm, you might not get home from the movies until well after 11pm. That might be too late for parents and their kids who have get up early the next day for school or work. If a movie starts at 5pm, that might be too early for a parent to get out of work and have dinner and get ready in time. There's just less flexibility with the longer running times, particularly as the screen count (not the theater count) for a movie decreases. In my case, i enjoyed Endgame, but i didn't have much interest in paying to spend close to another 4 hours in the theater to see it again. If it was an hour shorter, it would have been easier and more likely to find time for it. I have no idea why so many people (teenage girls?) went to rewatch Titanic, but i can only imagine if the movies were shorter, they would have made even more money.

Rob is the voice of reason here. If there’s more screenings due to the film having a shorter run time that means screening times are more flexible for viewers. If I am going to see a film in its 4th weekend and there’s only 4 sessions in a day and one is at midday, but there’s another movie I also equally want to see but has 5 screenings a day and has a session time at 1pm, I will then go see that. More sessions means more flexibility for viewers.
