Matt pretty much nailed it : This is a TV show on the big screen. All due respect to Christy, but I can't believe there are still movie critics who judge these crossovers by traditional movie standards and patterns. It's like a tv critic reviewing "The Winds of Winter" or "Ozymandias" and complaining about the lack of setup in the first act or the overwhelming amount of protagonists! Like... what year is this ? 2007? Film schools need to update their textbooks: Forget about 3/5 acts that constitute a movie, let's talk about 3/5 movies that constitute an arc.

Yea, why on gods green Earth would someone judge a movie based on the standards that a literally any other movie is judged by. I cant believe someone could be so stupid as to want a complete and enthralling experience that they paid to see instead of expecting something that is a mediocre stepping stone with poor plot but teases you with just enough to get you to take yourself to the next mediocre stepping stone of a movie in this never ending cycle of coloful risk aversion. I CANT BELIEVE she would actually critisize a movie that other people enjoyed! The absolute madwoman!

Christy always seems legit surprised when people disagree with her. She asks if Matt actually liked Civil War, almost as if it was a poorly reviewed film (and not 91% on Rotten Tomatoes). I also enjoys how she checks out every single time Game of Thrones comes up. It's only the most popular show on TV, so the comparison makes sense.
@Discoursivist
@Discoursivist 6 лет назад
Defunct Games I don't blame her, I'm shocked that Civil War got such universal acclaim. It is easily one of the blandest, by the numbers blockbusters, with terrible character development (and characters, for that matter), a terrible villain, and without a single interesting or surprising plot development.

Even if you couldn't go into this movie without having seen the other movies how could that be a criticism? You can't jump into Return of the King without seeing Fellowship and Two Towers. You can't start reading the sixth Dark Tower book without reading the other ones. You can't jump in on season six of Game of Thrones without seeing the previous seasons. This is the 19th movie I think it is more than fair that Marvel shouldn't have to worry about catching everyone up to speed. This is an ongoing story and to understand this part of the story you need to have context and that context comes from other movies. I think sometimes we hold movies to a weird standard of expecting movies to be accessible even if you're not following the series.
@Phanthief95

Michael Colan Thank you. They need to realize that this is the third Avengers movie. THIRD! No one can jump into this without watching the previous ones. No one can watch Return of the Jedi without watching New Hope & Empire Strikes Back. You have to watch the movies before it or else you will get confused.

This is a great example of what your channel brings to the film review community, three unique perspectives: fanboy, fun mom and unattached critic (not a slur). While I'm sure many will attack Christy for her opinion, I can guarantee there's lot of others that will feel the same way about such huge team-up movie. No, it's not for everyone but it was made for those who are fans of this material and the film series itself. It simply can't please a viewer who's unattached to this as a fan and feels overwhelmed by this behemoth of a movie. However, this film breaks new ground and is truly a first of it's kind. Merging storylines and characters from 18 previous films into 1 cohesive script with over 3 dozen characters given some form of presence is a stupendous challenge that was completed nearly flawlessly. The Russo's and the rest of the crew should be commended for a monumental achievement in film history. The 'rock concert' atmosphere is something to be admired, that so many people can be that engaged in the universe and characters they would respond so enthusiastically is something we need more of in movies. One last bit, you guys have a great review here except - horrible job at avoiding spoilers. This is why I never watch reviews of films that can easily be spoiled by saying so little ("extinguishing half the universe", to me, is a spoiler). And for the art house naysayers, having a film be this big of a hit can only influence even more film fandom which is good for the entire business.

In my opinion, scores are completely useless, and I never remember them or even pay attention when they score it. What I remember and pay attention to is their THOUGHTS and explanations of the art. Film criticism isn't about number crunching and statistics on a fixed plane/axis. It's an ART form, under which there are always MANY variables, different contexts and subjective intuition coming into play.

I saw it just a bit ago. I loved it. There IS a lot of action but it doesn't feel too fast paced and it's easy to follow. I f you have seen (and are invested) the majority of the MCU films this will certainly be much more emotionally powerful. It has laughs, it has sadness, and it has cheer out loud moments as well. I'd give it 9/10. Also, the end credit scene is the best one yet.

Two years ago I was underwhelmed by Civil War, but this one was really-really good, even though it wasn't flawless. The first 40-45 minutes with Thanos' introduction, with the Tony, Doctor Strange team-up, Vision and Scarlet Witch, with Cap, Natasha and Falcon showing up, and with the Guardians bumping into Thor was fan...tastic! I enjoyed every moment of it. Then there was another 45 minutes when the movie slowed down (Tony, Peter and Strange travelling on the alien ship to some planet, Thor and Rocket leaving to get the weapon, etc.), that part was not very engaging. But then, the last 1 hour with the battle in Wakanda, Thanos showing up on that other planet, and then in Wakanda, was amazing. The ending for me was a bit anticlimactic, but with all the character arcs, the emotional impact and with the best action scenes I've ever seen in a comic book film, this one has probably become my favourite MCU movie, and probably the best superhero movie ever. I loved the dynamic between Thor and the Guardians (90% of the humour was hysterical), I thought Doctor Strange was great (even though I was never a fan of him), as well as Tony, and the relationship between Vision and Scarlet Witch was impactful, it had a real emotional effect on me. Thanos and his guys were scary and believable. Some of my favourite moments were Cap and Natasha showing up to save Vision, Thor appearing in Wakanda, Cap and Black Panther running into battle, but there were many-many highlights of the film. Inspite of the flaws, I'm really impressed by the movie, I didn't expect it to be so effective and well-done.

This movie is awesome. It was really brave like *Empire Strikes Back.* To end the movie with such a *jaw-dropping* and *hopeless* state. I thought this was a very bold film narratively. Thanos is on 10, so to speak. Marvel delivered on a 10 year promise- Thanos did it. He showed up and legitimately wrecked house. Oddly, this is the film equivalent of DC's Final Crisis. Really bold. I have no issues following anything in the films. I read comics and enjoy the material, so I guess a cheat sheet isn't needed for fans.

Watching this after I finally saw it on the 4th, mostly because I had trouble finding a written review by Christy that was on point about the movie itself. Kinda curious about how people feel as I've been avoiding the social media surrounding it, and I was in a super gripe mood when I did. Overall I was sad neither of the characters I wanted to die did and that the only hero deaths seemed to come from Thanos. The Children of Thanos were awesome and deserved some notches on their belts.
@TheCrazyFreak
@TheCrazyFreak 6 лет назад
Hmm, I actually feel the opposite way than Christy about Civil War and Infinity War. After Civil War I was really worried as to how they were going to incorporate all of those characters into one movie (because everything felt too crammed for me in Civil War, but the thing is, Civil War was supposed to be a Cap movie, not an Avengers movie, and it just seems like so many other characters stole the show, when it was supposed to be about Cap and Bucky, and I hated that they introduced so many new characters in it), but I think Infinity War pulled it off really well. I'm biased, so I wanted more of certain characters (like Cap), but I didn't mind it as much as I did in Civil War. Also, there's a part two to this, which is going to feature more of the characters that didn't get as much screen time this time around, I believe (like Cap and Black Widow).

Arduous?? This movie hurtled along with no effort needed to stay engaged. There was no dragged out Ultron Farm scene, the villain is given a true pathos, and wanting more from each of the settings isn't a fault it's a tribute to how much fun each of those settings is. What is the other option? Make each of those it's own movie? No spoilers here, so I'll just leave it at, come on, this isn't a stand alone movie and don't rate it as one, it's a giant crossover event. Just take it in and get hyped!

honestly I am gonna @Kristy but not to complain: I will give an analogy of how I feel Infinty War feels to me as a movie. Its dessert, its that giant piece of chocolate creme cake, with so much sugar and calories its worth a whole meal on its own with just one slice. as a dietary Item it is not recommended to eat it only and nothing else and its nutrional value is horrible yet as a dessert you just dig in sometimes and it rushes you. Thats infinity war for me, while they tried to make this one accessable.... I am always like: Why would people who arent Invested in the MCU even go into an Avengers film, its the treat the extra climax that they gift us. as a standalone film I agree its not the best of the best or so. nah but as a penultimate episode of the MCU series ? it kicked Names and took Ass. Its a reward for fans to enjoy. Who will get all the characters, and the minutia. Or for people who love action movies. (yet IW does have an Undeniably emotional Core. Or even Cores. As I can think of 4 plotlines who rely heavily on personal emotions of Characters to carry the scenes.

Tony said that Thanos had been in his life for 6 years (The battle of NY) contradicting the " 8 years later" quote from Spider-man Homecoming...
@PrincipiaDeCinema
@PrincipiaDeCinema 6 лет назад
Also, in Thor Ragnorok it had been two years since Age of Ultron. They say this several times. This movie takes place immediately after that movie, as we see with the post credit scene. However, in this movie Jim Rhodes says to Captain America, "It has been two years." (meaning since Civil War.) The Marvel movies are laughable when it comes to their timeline. Iron Man 2 is supposed to take place six months after Iron Man. Then Thor, The Incredible Hulk and the end of Captain America are supposed to take place in the same week. The Avengers must take place soon after that. Then Iron Man 3 takes place at the end of that year, because it is right after Avengers and takes place at Christmas. So basically the first seven MCU movies all take place with in a year of each other, but after that it becomes a complete tangled mass of incoherence. GOTG and GOTG 2 are supposed to both take place in 2014, but if Avengers Infinity War takes place in 2018 then its been four years since we last saw them. Yet, very little has happened to them. Trying to figure out the timeline is futile.

While I don’t agree with Christy I understand where she’ s coming from. I’m a fan of these films, so I wasn’t lost, but these movies don’t function like normal films. Infinity War doesn’t go out of its way to initiate the uninitiated. You have to have knowledge of the previous 18 films. If you don’t, the movie doesn’t make sense. If someone comes into IW having never seen any of the other films, this film is probably entirely incoherent. With that said, unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that this movie exists in context.
@PrincipiaDeCinema
@PrincipiaDeCinema 6 лет назад
Even in context I think this film is a letdown. For instance, while we got some flirtation between them in Civil War the relationship between Scarlet Witch and Vision has barely been explored, but this film wants us to be really invested in them from the get go. I'm well aware of their comics history, and had been looking forward to seeing them together in this movie, but we basically skipped all the interesting parts. We're just basically told now that they love each other and so we are supposed to find what happens in the movie really tragic. The previous two Avengers movies worked because they took the time to give each character some kind of development in their story. Whedon had to fight for the farm segment in Age of Ultron, and that is some of the best stuff in the movie. Captain America: Civil War has only four action set pieces in it and the rest of the movie is characters talking to each other. That is one of the reasons its so good, because when people start punching each other we feel the emotions behind it. This movie is the opposite. Its mostly big action set pieces with not a lot of character development.

Kinda. I much prefer the standalones to the more bloated ones too, but the (top) critics are basically complaining about things that the fans already know and clearly won't care about, ie that movies in general should never be this bloated. Meanwhile the universe has been planned to the nines to get to this point, so it seems like there was at least a conscious purpose to it.

Maybe. But technicalities like those are things a huge amount of critics were never going to look past to begin with. Plus, people like Christy, who have already been vocal about being disengaged from the build up to these films, are just looking at each film looking to be compelled by each of them every time, and, my guess is that the people waiting until the 'Infinity War' films to be swept up in the lore of the MCU never had a chance of getting into them in the first place.
@CarSVernon

Yes agreed. A review I read was saying how this movie assumes too much about prior knowledge and how those who bailed a bunch of movies ago due to 'distaste and exhaustion' won't be able to follow it and it's like, yeah they won't go anyway, due to the previously mentioned distaste and exhaustion, lol.

Infinity war really isn't the masterpiece all the usual comic-book sites are making it out to be (collider etc) The deaths don't mean anything, they have 0 impact because anyone can be bought back also there's Spiderman 2, Black panther 2 etc.. So they aren't dead. There's too many characters to keep track of to get a coherent movie, it's just all over the place imo. Don't get me wrong the movie is ok, it should be called "Thanos the movie" though as he is the best thing in it and gets the most screen time.

Christy's expectations for this are bizarre - what was she expecting of an ensemble superhero movie? It seems like she would dislike it straight out of the gate, unless it was like 4 hours long.

I'm not saying she isn't allowed to dislike the movie, but she's criticizing it for not being a different type of movie, which is not a fair criticism. She might as well have said, "I didn't like this movie because I really prefer Hitchcockian suspense thrillers." Okay, but this isn't Hitchcock. It's not trying to be Hitchcock. Evaluate it for how well it accomplishes what it's trying to be, not for how well it fulfills your personal preference.

That's not a fair criticism, though. Do you think it would be fair for a critic to give a negative review to The Godfather or Goodfellas merely because they didn't like the gangster genre?

I gave it a high 7 (maybe 7.7, B+) I thought Tony Stark's diva/frontrunner attitude was more grating than usual. And I thought the special effects for the nanotech-formed weapons made him look like a red & gold Gumby. Since everyone else's powers are at a post-physics point (which is especially true of astrophysical powers of Thanos, Strange, Thor, etc), Marvel made the wrong choice of trying to amp up Iron Man's abilities in a way that completely defies physics. He should be daunted by the fact that he's facing a weapon that can BEND reality and TIME. He should've been completely outmatched and yet Marvel tried to make him stand toe to toe with Thanos. The Inspector-Gadget huge weapons that spring out of nowhere looked like a desperate attempt to be relevant in a cosmic fight. It's like making Batman completely unbeatable. Looks desperate. You'll know the Gumby moments when you see em. Seriously, wtf was up with that. There was a lot of fan service (e.g., dramatic entrance of Team Cap, sudden Iron Spider legs, etc). Marvel made sure that each person's favorite character got some shine. But again, this really should've been quarterbacked by Doctor Strange with a big assist from Vision. The only 2 Avengers who have experience even using an Infinity Stone never actually USE their Infinity Stones in a movie called Infinity War. Also, the movie doesn't lay out its internal logic. Most importantly: what do the stones do??? What are their weaknesses? If Scarlet Witch's power is of the same frequency as one of the stones, does that mean she's one of the most powerful Avengers? If she can't destroy the other stones, then does that mean that she could at least fend off an attack by the Mind Stone even if it's in the Infinity Gauntlet? Zoe Saldana nailed her death scene. Chris Pratt nailed his scene where he finds out about it. Tom Holland put in a mediocre death scene. Good delivery of the lines but the facial expression for the closeup didn't have the necessary panic. In his defense though, he said Chris Pratt kept making him laugh during that scene (maybe that's why he buried his face when he should've done panicked eyes in that closeup). ScarJo's fight scenes disarm my skepticism about a prospective Black Widow solo movie. Previously, I wrote that her age was showing in Civil War and that she was chubby and now swift-moving in Ghost in the Shell. She so lean, athletic, and fast in this movie. They did great things with Elizabeth Olsen (Russo bros aren't prudes when it comes to their female characters). Russo bros setup effective bookends. The Scarlet Witch & Vision romantic moments set up the emotional finale well. Gamora's childhood flashback setup the death well. And FINALLY Gamora kisses Starlord in a lustful enough way that you actually believe that she loves him (in both Guardians there's no chemistry and it even seems like she can't stand him). Ruffalo's comedy was cranked up too much. Clown-like role.
@jumpingman8160
@jumpingman8160 6 лет назад
"what do the stones do???" - It was shown in the movie via Thanos. Pay attention next time? "What are their weaknesses?" - Who knows? And is irrelevant for this story. "If Scarlet Witch's power is of the same frequency as one of the stones, does that mean she's one of the most powerful Avengers?" - she is. Same as in the Comics. She is one of the most powerful mutants. " If she can't destroy the other stones, then does that mean that she could at least fend off an attack by the Mind Stone even if it's in the Infinity Gauntlet?" - no, because the Mind Stone is pumped by the other stones in the Gauntlet. Simple logic. " Since everyone else's powers are at a post-physics " what does "post-physics" even mean?
@o_o942
@o_o942 6 лет назад
No, the stones' abilities were not explained or demonstrated in the movie (with the exception of the time and space stones). The limitations matter because it sets up the structure of the story. The rules of the story's universe. Writing 101. Lean toward education. It'll help you in life. Yes, she is one of the most powerful Avengers, but how does that power fit into the context of this story? If she has power superior to an Infinity Stone, why doesn't she just decimate the army? Why does she even have to actually go to the battlefield. see "rules of the story's universe" to understand now that the range of her powers is a "rule" that the story sets up. there are no such rules throughout the movie. It's completely capricious. It's like writing a story where Batman reveals a hidden healing factor simply because you want it to. Post-physics is a somewhat sarcastic reference to cosmic powers. In a story where everyone else isn't constrained by the laws of physics (i.e., magically post-physics), Iron Man should be conparatively impotent.
@o_o942
@o_o942 6 лет назад
What does the Mind Stone do? If you have a Mind stone can you use it against the other stones in some way? Clearly, it's shown that you can use the Time stone against the other stones. The rules of the story's universe dictate the strategy you use in the conflict. That's why they matter.

I don't like the comparisons that this is like a television episode. Despite what people may think, film and television are two different entities. It's a bit of a cop out calling this an episode of the Marvel Cinematic Universe tv show. I've never liked that comparison. HAven't seen the film, but a lot of these films minus Black Panther and a couple of others, are not very cinematic. I will say Thor: Ragnorok and Black Panther are much better cinematic achievements.

I really don’t GAF about these characters, given that I watch the movies as single entities. This movie has taken up fully half the screens in the city and there’s nothing else new out this week. Like Christie says your just getting into them then they are gone for an hour and it was a bit boring in parts too. That said Thanos was great, a proper villain at last and the action in the third act was also great.
