(And as to the calculations Thanos makes, they don't actually make a great deal of sense... removing half the population [and they imply he removes half the plants and animals too] would cause lots of ecosystems to simply fail entirely, and the ones that don't would quickly return to current population levels, probably in a human lifetime.)

Saw this on opening night. When we were walking out, EVERYONE was in shock and we were all dead silent. I vividly remember seeing the next group of people waiting and how their expressions changed. Excited. Chattering. Then they saw us walking out.. the smiles disappeared and THEY got eerily quiet and looked verrrrrry worried. Josh Brolin (aka Thanos) had a great answer to your question. Someone asked him, "Why didn't Thanos just snap his fingers and double the resources in the universe, instead of killing half the population?" He said, "Because that's how CALLOUS Thanos is (to others suffering). That didn't even occur to him."
@matthewchristian9591

It did he just realized it would make the problem worse more resources means more over population and destruction of planets for resources it is only putting a bandaid on the problem not fixing it. Not saying his idea was better.
@GaMEChld
@GaMEChld 10 месяцев назад
If you factor in exponential growth, doubling resources would be less effective for a given amount of time. But he didn't need to stop at double either. I wonder if he could have used the gauntlet to invent technology... Magic up some STC's from Warhammer 40K.
@Barnuses
@Barnuses Год назад
I don't think Thanos was portrayed as evil, he was convinced that because his planet ran out of resources and died that the same would happen with the whole universe. And because he didn't stick to his guns and sacrifice half his planet he didn't want indecisiveness to get in the way again. So now he has complete conviction towards achieving his goal. And has respect for those who share in his conviction. It shows in how he killed Loki because he wavered in choosing between Thor and the Tesseract. But said he liked Quill because he was going to kill Gamora when she asked him to. Or when Wanda killed Vision to stop him. Even Tony, he apparently was aware of the things Tony has done as he too was "cursed with knowledge." He respected that kind of conviction to their Ideals.

Thanos is the embodiment of extreme utilitarianism. The ends justify the means, and the ends are the extension of all civilizations in the universe. And he see himself as egalitarian because the selection of those snapped out of existence is random. But he has become so enraptured by this ideal that he justifies every evil act needed to make it happen. He is the “good points” that lead to genocide, slavery, colonialism, and every other atrocity committed in the name of the “greater good.” He stands in contrast to Cap’s statement “We don’t trade lives.” As a rule of thumb, even when Captain America is wrong, he is still right. Meaning even when his logic is incorrect, his viewpoint is correct and will be the right choice.

Thor's scene with Rocket is always a favorite of mine. It's great acting by Chris Hemsworth; you can see how much Thor is trying to keep it together, but the cracks in his facade are so visible. A lot of people are angry at peter for lashing out at thanos but I completely understand and I don't think I'd do anything different if that was me. He lost his mom and didn't properly let that go until 30+ years later when he read her letter, he found his dad, something he had wanted to do his entire life and when he did he found out he was the one who actually murdered his mother which opened up a completely new kind of grief he dad to deal with regarding his mom, he then lashed out and had to kill his father which is more grief he then realizes that yondu is his father who died in his arms after sacrificing himself for peter minutes after he killed his bio father, and the one person he finally allowed himself to love, who was there for him through that grief (who he just promised to kill and tried to kill for her but failed and lost her to her abusive father) he just found out she was murdered too and the person who did it is in front of him and you're telling me you wouldn't lash out too?

That's not how kratos is in GoW 3 at all... At least not that simple and not comparable, He's in a state of denial, frustration and with his trust to people destroyed. He's much more like Joaquin phoenix' Joker, where he has flaws and problems that could've been eased if the world around him didn't suck. We don't really know Thanos' pre titan's decay but as far as we know he's really survivor, kind like hįțľēr, he survived through a traumatic and deadly experience and saw himself as the only know what to do stop it to happen ever again.

Would've been cool to have X-Men, Fantastic Four show up but heavily focusing on the main Avengers really made everything so much more emotional, crossover with the Guardians was really cool. But who knows maybe it would've worked both ways we'd just end up getting this film a few years later as I'm positive Marvel would've pumped out a F4 and X-Men movies and then tie those into Avengers with Civil War and then Infinity War one big crossover. It's easy to be so overwhelmed by the entirety of the movie that you don't really have the chance to wrap your head around everything that happened with Thanos' snap. The end credit scene with Fury and Hill kind of give you a hint. Not only did the snap wipe out half of all living creatures in the entire universe, but there were also countless deaths as a result of those people disappearing. Imagine airliners with hundreds of people in the air. The pilot turns to dust, leaving whatever passengers not dusted to crash. People driving on the highways having to dodge cars, trucks, and semis, whose drivers have disappeared, becoming driverless missiles traveling at 70+ mph. People working in factories with dangerous chemicals would no doubt experience spills and chemical reactions due to the people working with them disappearing mid process. People in the middle of surgeries would have their nurses, doctors and surgeons disappear in the middle of a procedure, leaving them to bleed out on the operating table. In reality, the true cost of the snap was far more than just half. It could easily be argued that those who died in the snap got off easily compared to many of those left behind immediately after who either suffered gruesome deaths of their own, or had to deal with loved ones being inured or killed as a result of the fallout. Not to mention the emotional toll of seeing friends and loved ones disappear right in front of your eyes with no clue or what was happening. Just gone. No warning. No explanation. Your entire world just blows up in an instant. We do get to see in the next movie some of the aftereffects. It's not pretty. Great reaction! But have your tissues ready for the next one. Both for the beginning and the finish of End Game.

The original comic series this was based on was even crazier. The crossover comics were even wilder as every comic book series was affected from the lesser known comics to the most popular comics. Everyone was affected by that snap. The chaos was epic on so many levels it bordered on madness.

Thanos isn't about chaos. He's all about imposing his idea of order onto the universe.

Interesting fact about Thanos in the MCU: His motivation in the movie are way better than in the comic, in the comic he kill half of the population in the entire universe because he is a simp (LITERALLY, NOT JOKING, THATS HIS PLOTLINE) Meanwhile in the movie he has a more serious reason to kill half of the population and thats because he really believes that is the only way to save the entire universe, he doesnt want to rule it or whatever, he just want to save it and thats it,. So he has very good intentions but his methods are cruel with the people he want to save. Thats make him a complex character
@VanArchon

Not just that he's a simp, he's a simp for a female anthropomorphic personification of Death.

I'm sure someone in the comments already mentioned that in the comic book, i think, Thanos was actually doing all of this to impress the goddess of death, Thor's Sister Hela.

I get the joke/meme of "why was she up there all this time?", like... i laughed when it happened in the movie, but... she was there for a reason, the moment she came down to help, they went to get Vision/the stone, because they REALLY didn't want to deal with Wanda. Anyway, just wanted to point that out =P, i'm really enjoying you guys' reaction, and can't wait for the next ones. ^^

How come MCU Thanos doesn't use the Infinity Stones to create and provide enough resources for everybody in the universe?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
@Ge0Sway
@Ge0Sway Год назад
Thanos really didn’t put much thought into his plan. Can you imagine the damage he would cause to infrastructure on planets like earth? Hospitals losing their staff, freighters not having enough employees to operate and if the snap kills off an entire government you’ll end up with insane wars as people try to gain control. Plus you’ll have to kill half the universe over and over again because people would have learned nothing and will continue down the same path as before.
@aaronyayger
@aaronyayger Год назад
I think that's kinda the point. Even if it's not totally thought all the way through, that also helps his plan. Power vacuums and loss of infrastructure is more death to add to the total and therefore, less strain on finite resources. So even in your deconstruction, his plan still works in his head.

Thanos does make more sense than what you see of him here... you see the result. After one of the later movies it will make more sense when you look back. Once you realize who/what Thanos was and how his planet got to be the way it was... He still is mad, but I can see the way he got there.

Opening night for this movie was crazy. So many highs and lows. The theater I was in, it was near silent at the end with the sound of shock and sadness. Basically no one moved until the end credits scene. To your question about his motives. Depending on how close you think the MCU follows the comics. Thanos is an Eternal, so the answer to why is in the Eternals.
