This video demonstrates how to calculate average variance extracted (AVE) and composite reliability (CR) after a factor analysis. In this example, SPSS is used to perform a factor analysis and Excel is used to calculate average variance extracted and composite reliability.

This is just so helpful! I loved the way you organized your explanation visually, going through the lambda squared all along. I wish I can also be a great storyteller, such as you. Thank you.

this was great and very helpful. calculating AVE and CR is always such a pain. now I will have a go to file for every time I need to calculate them again. thanks!

This video was helpful, I liked that he broke down the steps. It seemed a little easier to grasp than some of the other videos in SPSS.

thaaaaaaaaaaanks alot for your kind help, slow speed of your teaching, and full explanation of each factor and formula. thanks a lot. you helped me alot. I could never compute AVE and CR without youuuuuuuuuu

Might be stupid question, but how do you know that the first four factors load under composite 1?
@truegrit4752
@truegrit4752 4 года назад
Your post is old, but maybe this will be useful for someone else: As a rule of thumb, your variable should have a rotated factor loading of at least |0.4| (meaning ≥ +.4 or ≤ -.4) onto one of the factors in order to be considered important. Some researchers use much more stringent criteria such as a cut-off of |0.7|. Found this info here: www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=what+is+the+cutoff+for+loading+factors++using+factor+analysis%3F&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

Thank you for the nice video! It is quite helpful but I would like to ask you about some more details, especially about your default properties when doing the factor analysis: 1) Why did you work with "principal component analysis" instead of "principal axis factoring"? To what extent does it make any difference when calculating AVE and CR (if so)? 2) You mentioned that you use "Varimax" rotation but I wonder if you have checked or unchecked "unrotated factor analysis" in the "descriptives" section? I would be very happy about some detailed insights and your reply. Thank you very much in advance, Sue

Thank you so much for this video, all your work is always so helpful, and easy to understand. I have one question and it is about using the correlates in the factors. What do you do when you have a negative number? In that case lamda will be lower because the sum will include a negative number. Thank you in advance.

Thank you for this video, Dr. Grande. Very informative. I have a question, though. I see that the composite reliability is calculated only for the items loading in the first component. Should it be calculated similarly including all the items for a reliability analysis of the whole instrument? Thanks in advance

Thank you for the video Dr. Grande, it was very helpful. My question is what do I do if I am using previously established scales for my data and the factors in these scales have cross/ complex loadings? (I am attempting to run the EFA to calculate the AVE to compare with a scale that I developed.) Should I: 1. Alter these previously used scales by deleting items with cross loadings until they are usable 2. Can I calculate the AVE with the main/higher loadings per factor (although this seems to give a small AVE)

Hi, thank you so much for posting this video. I've used it to calculate the composite reliability. Is there a way to also calculate the 95% confidence intervals for the CR in excel? Many thanks

Dear, Dr. Grande. I have a question. Is it correct to use the cross-loading method to assess for discriminant validity when the CFA is run under CB-SEM (e.g., ML, WLS, WLSMV)?
