I saw on Robert's last video that he & Larry are going to do a Podcast together!! Are you a Robert Cabrall member? I started with Larry's free content (and Robert's free stuff, too)--omg--my German Shepherd IS SO MUCH BETTER NOW!!! Robert & Larry are a little different in their methods, but basically very similar values & love for the animal. East Coast & West Coast, I suspect they'll find they are brothers from another mother, lol❤❤❤
Loved this interview! Avi is a character! The fact that he left the sport because he didn't like how the dogs were treated says a lot about who he is. People with that kind of integrity are hard to come by.
I've trained dogs for over 20 years after working in a shelter for 4 years. I also lost interest in training for awhile, until my 20 year old son started working the black german shepherd I bought him for his birthday. Now he's training me also, and I'm loving it. Just wish I had the stamina from those early days. Great interview.
AVI!!!! What a character! This interview wild ride full of amazing personality! Dog stories and experiences sprinkled with solid life lessons. Another great podcast!
Avi is one the coolest characters in the sport 😂. Also one of the most courageous men I’ve come across. When the fires destroyed Malibu, this man stayed and defended his home when it seemed impossible to survive it. Love me some Avi
I agree with Avi, what you do Robert , especially with limitations on your tool choice , is fantastic. He is right it is hard to mend shelter dogs with issues. Loved this chat very much. Interesting chat on trust and love. It has to be earnt. Thank you both : )
Great episode, Robert! I trained and competed with Avi in the early to mid 90's. I last spoke with him a few years back at the SW Sch Championships in Valley Center, CA. Still, a really solid guy throughout.
Now I've watched both interviews. Much of this confirmed what I've thought about baby vs 8-12 months old acquisition. If I were a breeder, I would hold puppies through obedience training before offering. Then purchasers will choose the dog they really want and the rescue industry would change for the better. Great interview 👍
@1:17:40 the talk about pick of the litter; Old Romans came with that term. They loved dogs, bred them and used in protection, guarding, farming, military etc. Their advice was: encircle the puppies with a ring of fire and let the mother come to save them. Which ones she picks up to save from the fire, are pick of the litter. Romans believed mother will save best pups.
Thanks Robert, Avi really is one animated character! Sometimes tricky to understand, but he's just so vibrant and relatable. Lots of laughing here! BTW I'm really enjoying the in person interviews
Awesome interview. So interesting to hear Avi speak.... Avi for me it was seeing Blacky Nuene Lande in 1992 with Wilfred Luneberg. Great interview Robert.
This is the second time I watch this video and I learn more. I trained my first dog (Doberman) in the late 70's using William Koehler's book as my bible. My dog was a wonderful animal and he did fine but some of Koehler's methods, although effective can be brutal. In fact there were some that I refused to implement on my dog. Just like Avi I too noticed that application of those methods are hard on the dog and they worked but it was not enjoyable for the dog or the trainer (unless they happen to be sadistic A-holes). I very recently got my new dog (a GSD) and became involved in obedience training again because I saw the new methods involving positive techniques which also work well without resorting to compulsive methods. I would have never returned to dog training if the old methods were still necessary. I look forward to watching this video again and learn even more.
I just started following the sport because my son got a German shepherd that now belongs to me been following Mr. Cabral for few months I have a lot respect and admiration for what you are doing I hope I can meet you both one day won’t mind taking a flight from New Jersey to meet two heavy weight like you guys
Loved it, its 1:24 mins Video. Could not resist to comment @ 45 mins. Now going back to watch the rest of the interview. Mr.Avi awesome. Nice jovial but to the point.
Love your podcasts Robert! I’m annoyed you have audio only on Spotify and have to go to RU-vid for Video...are you getting video to Spotify any time soon? Cheers!
a long time deceased dog named drago was given high honors in this interview..I deal with the owners of drago who now breed using frozen sperm..great breeders with worldwide credentials
Hi Robert i have a question. I guess many dog owners will have the same issue. I have a Belgian malinois 7months old and it always barks and lunges and acts as it is about to bite them ( aggressive ) i dont know whether it's about territorial behaviour or what but it barks on those people who comes daily and greet him. Are malinois short term minded because one of my friend used to play, enjoy and feed him for several weeks and my dog was submissive and calm enough with him but he went to his native for about 2 months and now my malinois has started showing aggression on him and couldn't recognise him ? Please help!
If I had to go to that kind of competition, the first dog I would choose is a good game bred Staffordshire bull terrier or American pitbull terrier, they will have all the needed characteristics and then have some more, these tasks will be like walk in the park for them....
"strong, lustfull power"is that thing that's valued in today's sport dog...this was an awesome interview, thank you gentelmen!and for those who may not be aware,i'm sure he was referring to "orry vom haus antverpa"multiple world championships.
Love "pick of the litter", no one ever tells you the truth about that just because you can have 1st or you can pick your puppy, you will get the best puppy!!
Loved this episode. But I don’t know how one can justify the actions in that video from the ipo club in Finland. It doesn’t matter how good the good is, if that’s how bad the bad is. I didn’t see nuance in corrections, I saw humans kicking and taking emotions out on dogs. But brilliant guest and conversation
IPO IGP c'est pour les dos cassés pour petites pattes arrières (bergers allemand) IPO IGP these are columns broken with back legs very little like german shepherds. Only Campagne, Mondioring. KNPV, NVBK are very excelent
thank you for this podcast! is there a possibility if you could list the people that were mentioned in this talk? (involved in the dog sport world, in particular the german guy with handling of his mal that impressed Avi)
@@avicohen8176 Thank you! (also for sharing your perception of the highlighted moments in your career so far). Its always interesting to hear how the training has evolved for the trainers and how trainers decide to evolve with it! The tip on sleeping on something that frustrated oneself on that day is helpful for all legs of life before deciding quits on it.
the thing about finland was bad though, im not sure the trainer Avi is refering to but if you search the videos on the internet there are people, male and female handlers kicking and hitting dogs like a doberman etc. So regardless of everything good being done before for sure that one bad thing was for sure not the first time right..
Robert I love your work, this channel and this podcast ... but your audio sucks ... the eco in this room makes the bassy voices hard to listen to and the mics need to be better isolated from the table ...every tap of the table sounds like a bass drum
sucks is a strong word. if I were recording it into a phone or laptop maybe. its pretty darn good. there are some occasional issues, but I'm no audio engineer. just a dog trainer talking to other dog people! enjoy it for the great conversation...
The spirit of competition can go too far, with sentient beings. I think this is what is going on today within the Dog sport world. Avi's Soul was guiding him away from the facade. Home defence training is different to sport approach. Do research!
