Cant wait till you say “This next guest is one of the greatest future thinkers of our age, he is alternatively educated but perhaps he is one of the most intelligent humans living on the planet. He can describe, with unmatched articulation, the intricacies of our current state of global affairs, the war on sensemaking, mankind as a paperclip optimizer, and revolutionary new ideas on politics and economics.” Without further ado, Daniel Schmachtenberger!!
He is the Frank B. Baird Jr. Professor of Science at Harvard University Longest serving Chair of Harvard's Department of Astronomy, Founding Director of Harvard's Black Hole Initiative and Director of the Institute for Theory and Computation, within the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences In July 2018, he was appointed as chair of the Board on Physics and Astronomy of the National Academies, In June 2020, Loeb was sworn in as a member of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology at the White House. In 2012 Time magazine selected Loeb as one of the 25 most influential people in space. I guess as with most things "nobody really knows" is a relative term
I love how Avi, a man who comes from the highest level of academia, is so open, modest, and humble with his way of thinking... Lex has really created and developed one of the best podcast's, at least on our planet 😉 😉
Loeb's mindset is far beyond most of the scientific community. He is not only a great professional, but a wise and a humble person. I wish our world's leaders were like him. Thanks for this amazing episode Mr. Fridman.
Brilliant talk, Avi has a concise clear and beautiful way of communicating and storytelling. Fantastic guest, Lex continues to amaze with the quality of his lineups!
@@leonelmateus can u please tell me what’s event horizon is? I know this may seem like a dumb question but clearly, I’m not the sharpest cookie in the jar…. which is a bit of confusing hyperbole. 😉 Sharpest tool in the shed, brightest crayon in the box, brightest bulb in the bunch… those I get. But I understood what he was trying to say. It’s just amusing to me how geniuses often get these trite adages dead wrong. I’m assuming it’s most likely do to a translation issue. Or just the basic fact that it’s simply not important enough to warrant anymore of the mental energy that he clearly uses exponentially more than the average thinker, professor, student, human being.
@@MoraleToad It was an opinion, Felix. I think you think he is making a factual argument but you have to also take into account his tone and the context of it being a youtube comment. Don't take everything so seriously.
Seriously... stop uploading these unbelievably interesting podcasts at bedtime! We need our sleep! I actually waited till morning to start listening. I have no idea how.
Wow, Lex! You're getting all the big names on the show talking about all the great topics we all want to learn more about. Congratulations, Man! Well done! Keep up the good work!
He is such an infinitely likable human being and the best creator of analogies I’ve ever seen. Even myself, someone not very well educated in maths and science, could understand and completely enjoy this conversation. His theories gave me a wonderful sense of wonder and I wish him the best of health and happiness.
I am saddened for humanity. every secret of the universe was revealed 1,400 years ago in a book called the QURAN. and people are still wasting time reinventing the wheel. SAD.
I don’t know how I found this podcast, half the time I don’t understand what I’m hearing, but I’m learning soooo much ❤️❤️❤️❤️ it was meant to be. This was so inspiring to continue learning
@@schuylerhaussmann6877 Yeah so many do that these days. Give your opinion on 1 subject and people seem to know what kind of life you are living. Like, what the hell xD
"We are not the sharpest cookies in the jar" 🤣 I love a good mangled metaphor. The fact that he absolutely nailed us humans at the same time is a bonus.
Best guest ever. This guy is my favorite scientist. I love how much he has sacrificed because of his convictions. He's the black sheep of the scientific community now but we'll see how long that lasts. I'm sure he'll be proven right later on
@Bootamate at least proven right that with a more open view of possibilities and parameters for finding life there will be a higher likelyhood of making more discoveries in general regardless of whether they are life or not.
This guy is AWESOME. So nice to hear some positivity and passion and excitement in a science field that isn't filled with cynicism and squashing dreams. Even if he's wrong about ʻOumuamua, he delivers tons of inspiration.
@@marcdellorusso180 credentials don’t make a claim true. The science community is pushing back a lot on it and honestly I don’t really agree that just because it doesn’t fit typical models of asteroids and comets that it’s therefore necessarily artificial. That said I respect his opinion and looking forward to further development.
This man is one of the greatest human beings ive seen.So smart, educated, well respected, Professor in Harvard , Director in so many fields of the Astronomy Science and at the same time so openminded, willing to educate everyone and continue the promotion of our understanding of the universe and our nature. His vibe is unmatched
One of my all-time favourite podcasts. I went back and found this again after a full year since first viewing it. I did so to share it with my daughter who is finishing her physics degree, to remind her - and myself - to always remember the childlike beauty of discovery.
Fantastic advice near the end. There are far too many "experts" who care more about their own ego than the scientific pursuit. All they do is shut down new ways of thinking, and turn people off with their snobby eliteness. It's a real shame that so many of those types are in positions of power in the academic world.
I think not having a ego is a big part of science also not letting society our other minds pullot your brain nowadays everything is layed out information is everywhere every second of the day at any time it really makes it hard to come up with your own theories...It would seem science would be better nowadays but is it really?Technology is better but are scientists and the mind really better? They still don't no half of what Einstein,Tesla,Newton,Darwin and many others knew these scientists nowadays are studying scientists from hundreds of years ago imagine what those guys could do with today's technology and funding its amazing to think how smart these guys where.Im just saying I don't think todays scientists have a free mind its almost programed weather thats good our bad I don't no?
I think though that there are very many enthusiasts who really think that an alien culture has already been found or that Sumerians found some; so the scientists are just trying to pull us back a little. Finding the truth is difficult, and even scientists would like to believe that we might come across aliens some day. We forget that on Earth, to get to an intelligent human being from the beginning of life, it took thousands of millions of years. We could make thousands of silly mistakes and pollute the Moon, or the Planets, if we went out into space. Also it takes a long time to cross the universe, and our lives are not long enough to go very far. These are just a few of the problems I have just mentioned of course. I used to try to find Aliens when I was 13 years old, by looking through an old gunsights propped up in the garden. I got excited by what turned out to be a weather balloon! Hehe!!!Cynthia McLaglen
@Ricky Ricky I doubt they're actually left wing. They might be a majority liberal, but how many are actually farther left than that? And in red states I'm sure there are more conservative professors. So your comment lacks seems to lack logic and foundation. Are you suggesting that professors to the left of conservatives are more likely to be egotistical and shut down new ways of thinking? That's strange, because conservatives shut down new ways of thinking by nature. It's in the very word "conservatism". Conserve traditional values/ keep things the way they are. When it's not those, conservatives fight to regress to times that were less humane, or things that hurt the working class while giving a nice boost in pay to the rich. So if you can provide any evidence that conservative professors and academics don't have similar egos on average than to liberal ones then I'd be glad to read it. If actual leftists were included in the study that would be especially interesting since true leftists care about the well-being of everyone, and making sure everyone gets equal opportunity to succeed.
It's good, but he missed a lot of other important topics about possible alien live Avi covers....most importantly the Venus Clouds. He wasn't prepared at all.
Thank you for the content Lex, i work 3rd shift and your podcasts make some really boring nights interesting and exciting. You are very much appreciated sir.
@@nomandad2000 nice taunt. Not gonna elaborate since there's already resources out thereru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aY985qzn7oI.html
@@TasX wow. Color me amazed. A RU-vid video. I’m supposed to sit through an hour of that to decide if you are shitposting or not? I’ll get right on it.
Lex, I’m incredibly thankful for this podcast and the one way friendship I’ve had the opportunity to develop with you throughout the past year. If you ever get the chance, I think you’d enjoy talking to Michael Levin, Jaron Lanier, and Giulio Tononi. Keep making incredible content and spreading positivity!
I’m not saying Lex isn’t great, but literally every time I watch any video when auto play is on, the next video is always a Lex Fridman podcast. Every single time
It s pushed. I feel the same. This is not the only good content on the platform but it seems they wanna give him an advantage over other contents. Not fair
I have to have my auto play off, it wouldn't just play the same channel's video, it would play the EXACT SAME video every single time. Autoplay is broken as fuck.
He really broke everything down so well. His point of view has always felt like commons sense to me and I never understood why the smartest people in the world can't see it that way as well. Too much ego in science. Sad state of affairs. It holds back true progress.
Not necessarily. The spontaneous formation of life from non living matter may be such a stupendously improbable event that it has only happened once in the history of the universe, on Earth.
This is by far one of the best podcasts I have ever heard! I am so appreciative that a scientist like Avi has that childlike curiosity necessary for new ideas and discoveries. I love his quote about reality!!! Great interview Lex!!!
I too am truly grateful that a man like Avi Loeb is in the position he is in the scientific and academic communities. One of the best podcasts I have ever heard. Thank you Lex!
@@arlen1630 even if you contribute nothing it would still be more beneficial than what this guy is doing. name a single contribution or paper that he has done that has benefitted humanity in the last 10 years. or do you only know him from the podcasts he goes on with the sole purpose of shilling his shitty pseudoscience books? simpleton.
It's refreshing to hear a scientist, Avi Loeb, Harvard’s top astronomer saying this. For the skeptics, I will quote the following: All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.
Killer interview. Love Avi, especially his open mind, scientific discipline, and youthful POV on exploring new frontiers. He's one of the rare members of the scientific elite who lives up to the spirit of Feynman. Thanks Lex!!!
Are you joking! He's the exact opposite of Feynman! He would have wiped the floor with this guy, who's just a low level self promoter. Just the kind that alien fans fall for.
Agreed. 💯 His books are so interesting as well. "Extraterrestrial" got me through a months-long ordeal. We love these open minds!! Aren't they inspirational? 🤖🧡
Lex, try to do an interview with Neil DeGrasse Tyson. I really respect both of you for different reasons. I’m close to 80 and hope to see an enlightening interview of him by you before the clock runs out for me. I saw your interview of Fiona Hill and have been an avid watcher since then.
Lex thank you for letting him talk a lot :-) Unbelievably inspiring to listen to Avi Loeb talking about cutting down bureaucracy and ego, and what cannot be done, and focusing on what CAN BE done!
I love how Avi takes the gist of the question and runs with it, before waiting for Lex to finish phrasing and paraphrasing it.. Really helps keep the level of engagement going, imo
@@TOMBRADY-hu8gp Lol I would love to see the math for your statement. Santa is a fictional character, alien contact is considered improbable due to a number of factors but not impossible.
Oumuamua was traveling close to 200,000 miles per hour. That's insanely fast. The collision that caused it to fragment from it's larger body, must have been huge. Who knows how long that thing has been flinging through space.
There is no way around but to love Avi Loeb’s personality. I can imagine that he upsets some of his colleagues with his childlike, passionate, fearless approach. They wish they could be more like him. He is so intelligent and at the same time humble. He is the perfect scientist. I never get tired of listening to him. I wish he had a full series of lectures for science interested people.
This is going to be a fun one. Dr. Loeb is SUCH an interesting and creative thinker. I always learn something new. Lectures aside, this might be the longest podcast I've seen him do. I can't wait!!
Nothing to "dialogue" about objective reality. It is what it is, it can only be experienced and, ideally, understood. Now where is the evidence of the Earth being "a spinning blue ball in vacuum"?
Analogies are a double edged sword however, which also have the ability to confuse and misdirect the original consideration, which I think unfortunately does happen with this discussion.
@I OFFER YOU THIS agreed. it was a bit much at one point, because it was killing the flow of the explanation. But I think he was trying to "dumb it down", so certain people could understand certain topics.
@@GenikaXVI Well Joe IMO is still up there but Lex is rising real quick and will eventually get the top spot especially since Joe is no longer fully on RU-vid. Lex has this style of not interupting his guests as they speak plus him being an engineer is able to really get the best out of his guests a good number of whom are scientists and engineers. He will have to start bringing on a lot more celebrities and internet stars from diverse backgrounds to fully claim that top spot but that is something I dont think he is really interested in. But hey who knows???
They are. This Lex fellow might be an academic but he doesn't know everything. He's wrong about that...that or he didn't choose his words very wisely. Everyone is special in their own special way. Doesnt mean we have to brag about it and let the EGO get in the way of that "special" uniqueness in each and every on of us. Anyone can do that and most people do. lol not very original. Believe it or not. Perspective is everything.♥️
@Mouse Utopia i think that’s your takeaway. In a sense none of us are truly special, we are pretty much 99% alike, after all, but that doesn’t mean we can’t love and have affection for eachother. That 1% makes the difference. Perhaps you may not agree with his non special individualism, but wisdom is another thing, and he’s certainly wise (his respective field at least). Just my thought.
This is one of the best interviews I have ever had the privilege of watching! Lex's inquisitiveness is on par with Avi's childlike genius and they balance each other perfectly... Both interviewer and guest are top notch. Avi is such a gem of a human being. I wish more people looked at the world through eyes like his. It would certainly be a more interesting place if that was the case! Thank you, Lex for yet another special meeting of minds.
I am a high school teacher in a school with a planetarium and astronomy classes. We also invite elementary students to the planetarium every year. It would be great if every school had that!
I've thought that for years. Just screw the math for the firdt five years or so and just talk about exploding stars, the solar system.... And also the way math is tought is all wrong in my opinion. It is all about the mental hymnastics and abstract definitions... The physics way should be used. Your given problem, which you do not know how to solve and work on that for a while and once you truly appreciate the problem you can either arrive at the correct formula yourself or you will truly understand the mathematical solution (the smarter students figured out). Math is a toolset. You don't learn how to use a carving knife or a Dremel by studying the tool for years and theoretically discussing how it could be used. You take a block of wood or whatever with an idea of what it should become and along the way figure out what the right tools are.
@@telsutton He never claimed it to be a fact. I mean, wasn't it obvious? I genuinely do not understand how exactly you managed to interpret it this way.
Great episode. I really think this podcast exhibits open-mindedness, curiosity, intuition, and other good qualities that we can all benefit from developing in ourselves. Thank you :)
Avi, despite your apparent side-lining of approvals and accolades, as a layman the lifestyle markers you value ring true and are held in high esteem by this hermit of the woods. A pleasure to hear you interact with Lex and to witness your verve.
This man is a terrific educator. You can tell he'd be comfortable teaching high school students as he would in front of a Harvard graduate class. Love hearing the way he explains things!
I started as a kid wanting to be a scientist and that was my aim leaving high school, but then I got sidetracked by my music studies and ended up first as a conservatory teacher and then as a music therapist for all my career. I always had a casual interest in the paranormal, and as I've got older I've become much more interested in it and metaphysics. I still love science. I see no reason for there to be any contradiction in the fields. I'm so happy to have stumbled across your channel and this video today. Subscribed to the podcast (and here, for support), since I generally **listen*" to videos.
I am Israeli and while hearing the guest I detect his accent as like mine lol ...never heard of Avi Loeb who is also Israeli....thanks to lex now I know...awesome show!
I love Israeli accents because it is easy for me as a native Spanish speaker to understand, same as with other English accents when spoken by Greeks, Serbs, Russians or Italians for example
I love the professionalism of Lex Fridman’s interview quality. The quality of conversation is the best on the internet. We don’t have to listen to foul language or drug-related cultures. Real problem-solving discussions to address real issues are always the focus…thank you sooo much!!!
