For me the major advantage is the ability of the birds to build their strength by flying reasonable distances. I have 2 aviaries with a common birdroom and find the birds to be much stronger than those that spend all their lives in cages. Natural daylight and access to rain showers also seems to help. I do however hang all my nestboxes inside.
You definitely have the risk of inbreeding. You will need to make sure that all of your birds are not related or you don't put nest boxes in for them to breed if you have multiple birds that are related in the same cage together. Your best option would be to put them in breeding cages so you can choose your pairs.
Can you breed canaries in a aviary? I have 30 canaries and am currently building a indoor aviary for them. It’s 10 ft long by 5 ft wide with 7 ft high ceilings. Do you think this is big enough? For canaries I have a pair fancy gloster and boarders and two pair of mini canaries and black canary and red factors and red agate and 1 Russian male canary and a pair of solid yellows and a pair of white. I also have some rust colored red and a few pink canaries. I have just about a equal number of males to females. I just wanted to know if it’s possible to breed canaries in aviary?
You have a great collection of canaries. You can definitely breed in a colony setting with canaries. Just beware that it can be tricky during the breeding season as males will become aggressive towards each other and will fight.
Thank you Chris for the video, it was kind of interesting one. Just wondering have you faced stargazing on birds when you transferring them from such large aviary to smaller cage? Thanks.
@@birdnerd tank u v much for your reply..also can a hen sing like a cock canary as my too keep on fighting beaks open and going for it..had to separate them ..are they the same sex..this is 2 weeks now..and just v dominant when it come to perchers feed drink u name it..also when do u separate your male's from hens
Why do you Americans destroy the English language. Just say aviary. You don’t need to try and and pronounce the I and A It’s pronounced avry. The same as vehicle 🚗. Why do you lot use the H.
Hi, don't you experience some difficulties with mixing parakeets and finches in one aviary? I have about 30 finches (gouldians, canaries, and other species) and one pair of budgies. I had to take the budgies away because they destroyed all the finches nests. Do you have some tips for me maybe how to handle this problem? Greetings from Belgium
Great question. Yes parakeets can become very destructive and nosy birds. I would not suggest breeding them with any other birds but their own species. In my large flights I don't usually breed birds together so i'm not too worried about the parakeets disturbing nest. But is you watched my latest video on the parakeets I did end up separating them into their own cage to breed so they wouldn't disturb any of the smaller finches.
birdnerd thanks for the response, my problem or ‘issue’ is that i always breed in the aviary. So i guess my only option is to take away the budgies then in a seperadge cage. Furthermore i want to say that i like your videos very much so keep posting new ones please. Grts
