Good video, i learned from your video, i learned about the brown around the edge, i did not the cause but from now on i will mist my avocado plants. You should consider grafting your plant so you can have avocados however grow it as a house plant that's fine the plant looks beautiful very healthy.
Thank you @Mdiaz 😊. I’ve yet to try grafting and if I can find a mature grafting as well. In future it’s definitely something to eye. Glad you found the vid useful.
Hi. Titus great to hear someone else from melbourne Australia i am as well, ive just transplanted my avocado from water to soil with lava rocks in the bottom and in the mix of perlite and some cow manure mixed in as a short feed i hope it takes off of got in a large glass jar with holes i drilled in for air flow the lava rocks will help with air flow. I've put my avocado plant in a hot house/ small green house where i hgave all my other plants including my mango seedling now growing nice each time the get to about 150mm hieght i bring them in the green house outside so far all my mangos are growing well. Including my 3 Adenium desert rose plants.
Aye! Another Melbournian! Hope you guys are doing ok with the 4.0 lockdown 😊 Thanks for sharing bro! I’m curious whether they can grow fruit in our state and I saw a tree with fruits around pakenham which was pretty promising.
@TitusFeliciano yes, but the sun moves east to west along the solar equator, which basically divides the Earth into northern and southern hemispheres (similar to Earth's equator, but the solar equator is tipped 23 degrees off). So the direct sunlight will enter North facing windows in the Southern hemisphere and South facing windows in the Northern hemisphere. Also, you mentioned that you don't think there is as much UV light in the winter... You're half right... It depends on who's winter you are talking about. In Australia, there is less UV in the Winter, because the Earth is a bit farther from the Sun. However, in the Northern hemisphere, Winter occurs during December, January, February, and March when the Earth is closest to the Sun, and thus gets more UV rays.
I’m growing an avocado tree in a desert at high elevation. I started to grow it when there was snow outside. It’s still in the water phase, but it will soon be transferred to a pot!
I live in the UK, My young Avocado seedlings got attacked last year in one afternoon,, NOW I Water and feed from the bottom it stopped mine getting flys in the soil. I also got some yellow flower full on sticky’s from eBay which I put in all my plant pots inside.. I did get caterpillars which had a feast eating my leaves over night so I sprayed them with my grandads spray remedies for all plants leaves for green flies and bugs 3/5 drops of eco friendly dish wash soap spray and leave for at least 5 mins then wipe the bugs off the leaves. I still spray every day before I put them out and bring in at teatime rarely do I see any now. Hope it helps in your area Paul Uk
Thank you 😊 Avocado trees are huge and massive lols 😅 probably need like a chainsaw to prune them. Alternatively if it’s just a plant, I honestly just pluck of the dry leaves and or prune leggy branches to promote bushy growth 😊
@@frances4797 honestly i made avocado toast one week and had the pit and was weirdly (first time ever) planting flowers one week cause hey, why not. I threw the pit in w the flowers and they grew... But a bit later so did the avocado. So now the flowers are all dead but Wednesday (i named her that) is about 4ft tall 😂
@@Rocks_D_Hiro That's so cool!!! 😂 I made guac yesterday, and apparently the avocados were over ripe, mushy. When I cut the seeds out, they were literally split open and GROWING 🌿 inside!!! I've never seen that before lol. I planted them in a pot yesterday. Keeping my fingers crossed 🤞
MOSQUITO BITS seriously changed my friggin life!!! It’s a natural product and kills tf outta fungus gnat larva. I cannot recommend enough!:-)) Great video!!!
Hi, awesome video. One of the best. May you advise me please. I germinated the avo seed in water and have recently planted it in a pot. I think it's been in the pot for maybe 6/7 weeks but roots are already poking out the drainage holes. Could it be time to get it into a bigger pot already?
Thanks Shabi 😊. Usually when roots poke out it’s just looking for water outside of the pot, but doesn’t necessarily mean a repot is needed. If you want the roots to just grow inside the pot, I would repot in the same pot and just adjust the roots so it’s inside the soil. The seed can be fragile if it’s still present so just be careful
The product is called pyerethrum. I made a video on it here HOW TO ELIMINATE FUNGUS GNATS | WHAT ACTUALLY WORKED AND WHAT DIDN’T ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Hj498MH5RA4.html
I loved your video! Can you please talk about root rot? I grew mine in little glass jars and they were growing so fast but then some of the roots became very dark brown and soft and I think it slowly killed the rest of my plant 😕. How did it get root rot? Should I cut off the soft brown roots?
Hey @jotarosa, thanks for the tip. In Australia it’s nearly winter and I usually get root rot during that period I will make a future video of it and will plan for it.😊 For now, tip for rooted plants: don’t keep them in water for too long as some roots aren’t tolerant to having just hydro. Several issues you may have could be a build up of chemicals from the water, algae and also lack of oxygenated space for the roots to grow. As soon as roots have a second growth on it, I would usually plant in “airy soil mix” which I made a recent video of 😊 So definitely cut the rotting areas until the white part. Dip it in powder root hormone and put it in ‘moist’ sphagnum moss until it regrows roots again. If there are bacterial issues the rot may spread and kill the plant, but hope it’s not too late
I'm not sure if you ever did post a vid on how you got rid of your fungus gnats... but at LEAST half of our indoor plants have them as well and so far, we haven't found that holy grail product to get rid of them. I'd love to know what product(s) you used to get rid of them.
Honestly. They’re still there. Moreso on hot summer days. They seem to be less active on cold weather. So I’d say they’re less but not as infested 😅 The 2 products that work well for fungus gnats are pyrethrum on soil for larvae and sticky traps for the adults. What I haven’t tried yet due to costs are bugs for bugs and diatomaceous earth. One day I will try those too hehe.
@@TitusFeliciano Ty for the tip! I'll try out the pyrethrum 👍🏼 I've tried diatomaceous earth, but they've come back. But not necessarily saying it won't work for you. I've used it on our basil, but since she requires regular watering, idk if that's the reason why diatomaceous doesn't work for us.
@@caloo2010 with Diatomaceous earth it is moreso effective only if it’s bottom watered and top layer kept dry. Let me knowhow you go with Pyrethrum 😊 Never apply it on the leaves as it will burn the leaves
What can I do differently, I grow my avocado tree inside but only grows about 3 leaves at a time & they droop & die. It's by a window but not in direct sun. It is about 12 inches but the leaves do not grow.
@@TitusFeliciano I’m terrified to prune it but I will start doing my research about this today 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼 I’m trying to grow this plant in a place where it absolutely doesn’t exist so everything feels like a very big risk 😅
Hello, love your video ! I have an avocado plant in a glass jar with only water. It’s growing tall but the old leaves are turning brown. Any tips for water avocado plants ?
love the video! i have a question, i germinated my avocado seedling in water, then i transferred it to soil. it’s been around 2 months and it’s not growing, any tips?
@@TitusFeliciano no problem! i’m just using some regular miracle grow potting mix, i’ve grown 2 avocado plants before but due to the weather they both died
For seedling soil, i would tend to use 1/3 perlite and 2/3 Peat Coir or Pear Moss as it is more sterile with less likelihood of root rot. I would avoid fertilizing it till about 1 year and repotted to a bigger pot. Sometimes the seed just needs time to root. It may be that the seed has become dormant or have died. Can you check the roots to see if it’s white? Feel free to send me photos on my insta so I can see how the seed is looking in the soil. My insta is thriving_foliage Also when you mentioned weather killed it what did you mean? 😊 due to hot or cold weather.
Hello, now I try to grow avocado from avocado seed using the water. May I ask when we should move avocado plant from water into soil. Do you have any idea if we use the coffee powder to grow the avocado plant because i plan coffee powder to fertilize the tree.
I would do it as soon as you see the tiny root showing up. Just pop it above a moist soil (Not wet) Coffee powder is acidic and a mould magnet so I try to stay away from it. Although it is quite nutritious, it can be acidic if concentrated Hope that helps 😊
@@TitusFeliciano thank you. Because I just try to grow it with 2 different method. First I grow it in water and second I grow it by using coffee powder. By the way I noticed that 1 seed produce 4 seedling. Have you ever seen that.
@@TitusFeliciano the one with coffee the root grow faster then in the water but in term of upper part the one in water grow faster than in coffee. Anyways, I put two seed together in the coffee powder and one seed is already grow while the other seed just start growing but I noticed that the second start to grow with more than one seedling.
My avocado has taken a turn for the worst and I don't know whyyyy. Browning leaves, all the leaves have fallen off and I've recently reported, cut some dead roots and trimmed back the stems that were left. 😭 I don't know what else to do.
I think. Overwatering or maybe it’s time to let it go. Sometimes, I find once ignored they thrive. There’s this avocado seed I was composting outside our house that kept growing new shoots. I kept cutting it to no avail. It started to grow more shoots, so I just uprooted it lols hehe 😅 Just try another one if it dies off.
@@TitusFeliciano this one kind of just fell in my life. Was already sprouting when I opened the Avocado. I was so proud of myself that I got it to grow. But now... It's given up lol thanks for the reply!
Can you actually put the plant on a table, then actually step back so the camera shows the whole plant, and you actually don't have to keep lifting it up? Isn't that actually the whole purpose of making a plant video, to actually show the plant, or is this a 'look at me' video. I'm really having an issue with my avocado plant leaves curling. thanks.
Hey Roxanne thanks for your creative feedback :) My space limited at the time and I didn’t have the resources Available to accommodate having a small table, chair and also camera stand that was high enough to enable me to do this at the time. As you’ve noticed it’s me talking and not the plant hence you see me directly at the camera and I show the plant as fit when I do my spiel. My more current videos would be more wide angled as I’ve upgraded my camera and stand by I still so it from the floor due to spacing issue. Hope you understand 😊
@@TitusFeliciano leaning too much to the side, i never put a support for it, and its too big. I looked how you prune it and just did for the first time :) hopefully it will be ok now
Been organically controling pesticides with just (when necessary purified) water, Soapnuts, Neem oil mixed with some Baking soda for over a decade now... works great
Hey Titus! Thank you for your video! Two quick questions! Our avocado plant was never proned, and now it’s got 2.5 feet of stem, and two 2 feet long branches with a bunch of leaves at the end. Do you think it’s a good idea to prone it? It does have some small leaves 5 inches below the split of the branches. So I’m thinking if I cut off the entire top and just leave the 3 small leaves, it will still be better than the tall spindly plant we have now hahah. Second question, that’s the spray you used to get rid of fungus flies again? We were given a plant and it’s got a lot of fungus flies in it 😅😅😅. Hey thank you a ton!
100% yes :) Usually pruning promotes trees to bush out. I would leave at least 2 nodes with leaves per trunk so that it still has a source of energy absorption
For pest control outdoors. I have used tobacco tea on my citrus and avocado plant and it seems to work so far. I simply sprayed the tobacco tea while misting the plants. I saw that bugs were no longer eating away at the leaves.
Thanks for your opinion. I’ve actually gotten a hygrometer which measured the humidity level pre and post misting. It does help to a certain degree, but maintaining humidity is another thing. Certainly works as I’ve tried it :) It’s only applicable in dry arid environment like melbourne Australia.
hello Titus! I want to ask u for advise what to made for may avokado after around 4 mounths on it appeared some very dark red lines and i think they are from pest in the soil. IMy avokado isfrom seed in the water and the lines appeared after i plant it in the soil. I don"t wanted to die so i put it back to water and now is in it. Before this avokado i had another and it die from same thing. I dont know is this is from my conditions to them? Can u tell me what is the soil u use for your avokados?
Hi Andrey I usually use sterile soil mix for seedlings and made a video for it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-arAuHGmwIeM.html Hope that helps you :) Also it helps to avoid over watering.
Seems like. Yes. Also. It would be more bushy if you cut the tip and just leave around 2-3 nodes with leaves so it can have more branches and to avoid it being too leggy :)
Hi Raf. I’m not sure where you’re from. But if it’s in a pot, you could potentially get it to re-establish itself indoor as long as you don’t overwater it. But if it’s rooted and established in soil, I would avoid digging it out. I had an avocado outdoor planted in soil during non snowy winter here in Melbourne and it grew back leaves in Summer after it shed off during winter.
@@TitusFeliciano Ok, thanks, I live in Texas, we planted the seed in April and it had grown to be at least 12 inches tall with leaves until it got cut. Based on your response, my Mom thinks we should leave it alone and water it.
Yes. But it stinks and also not necessarily good for all plants I found due to it’s oily and strong content. Everyone online seems to talk highly of it. But it’s not my preference to go to.
Sometimes no. Unless you can be 100% sure that the soil has no fungus gnats. Also if you have other pots with fungus gnats it will just settle on your new soil too.
Super helpful video!!! So thorough! Thank you!! I have a young avocado plant. But I live in a low light very cloudy area. My avocado plant is very long and leggy. I want to prune it but it only has 3 leaves at the top of it. Should I just cut it by a node to try to get it to branch out ?
Thank you 😊. I’m reluctant to say yes, because baby plants are really sensitive to pruning with leaving any leaves to sustain it and draw energy back to the plant. I would suggest just pinching the tip leaf only and leaving 2 leave at the tip. Once the other bottom nodes starts getting growth, you can then proceed to pruning it lower. Also. Put it close to the window seal as being leggy is a sign that it’s not getting enough sunlight. Hope that helps
Likely the best thing for preventing fungus gnats in the first place: look up bottom watering for your plants. Basically you just let your plants soak up water from the bottom of the pot, leaving the top soil dry, thus preventing fungus gnats. Not to mention that bottom watering is also good for forming roots on the bottom of your pot, not near the top where they can end up strangling your plant.
I have an avocado plant that I'm growing currently, the thing is, my avocado died, BUT then it came back to life several days later. BUT then instead of seeing one plant.. I saw TWO plants!! Is this normal? And how do I separate those two? Or should I separate those two? I'm a beginner gardener and this is my FIRST AVOCADO PLANT EVER!!!
@@lifeofyooms3026 it’s hard to really answer your question but to just assume that maybe you plant died up to a viable node which then grew 2 new branches because roots were still healthy.
No doubt about that 😊. If grown indoor it’s really more ornamental than domesticated fruiting tree. Plus you would need another flowering avocado to co polinate with I heard.
🙂 Hi I like your video. I noticed your on the way to your first 1000 subscribers. Good news you now have an extra subscriber. You deserve many more too 👍
If you start loosing leaves below, it may be the start of root rot or too dry. Avocado loves lots and lots of hydration usually, so 2 weeks may he too long?
I've just grown my very first avocado tree from pit! It's grown up to 8 Inches so far. My understanding is that you want to prune it generally around 12 inches tall or so. I also heard that you want to prune from the top node of the 2nd set of leaves? My main concern right now is that I live in Canada. Should I prune soon or is it too close to the cold Autumn months now and I should wait until Spring at this point? Should I pot it in soil soon and before the pruning?
Pruning and repotting it would be best done in Spring for best results. I found they’re quite hardy plants, but if it’s still young it’s better to do it close to the end of winter season close to spring.
@@TitusFeliciano Thanks for that! I either have to plant it in soil (from water) right now while it's still warm weather or leave it in water until next year close to spring and couldn't decide which was better. Another thing I noticed in water is that the water will turn into a fluorescent green after some time. Not sure what that's about. I change the water out when that happens and have to use a pipe cleaner to wipe away the green pollen-like substance from the glass because it sticks on there like crazy.
@@Greensky02 it’s algae. If the water is exposed to sun it will create that green film. Maybe try putting the jar away from direct light but close enough that the plant still gets light. Excessive algae may also cause root rot
