Enjoying your "everything you need to know about CHICKENS!” Channel! Such a fun in depth & well presented source of info! You are appreciated champion!
I have been giving my chicken a meal by late evening, so that they don't feel too hungry until the next morning. But your idea of getting them to search for critters and help clean their space, was awesome 👌. Thank you so much for sharing all the info 😊
I'm so glad I found you. I live smack dab in the middle of a city, and just got my first flock of 5 little chicks. I'm very excited and want to do things that Brigit and protect my chickens, right from the start. While continuing to be respectful of my neighbors.
Thank you from Australia!! Love your videos, you inspired me some time ago to get interested in chickens. It's now turned into a passion which gives me so much joy. Thank you again💖🐔🐔🐣🐤🐥
I am in love.... With your content and your happiness and your love for life, and for chickens... your awesome. Thank you so much for sharing your content
I bake my egg shells till they are crispy. Then put them in a coffee mill or food processor and it grinds up really small. Then I sprinkle it in with their food. Instead if baking m one can set them in the sun a couple of days,
Cut their heads off to 'eat' chickens anyway. Make about a 3" inch diameter hole in the center of the bottom of a plastic 5 gallon pail. Pull the head through the hole and cut the chickens head off.
Thank you so much!! We love our chickens so much and love feeding them breakfast and snack before bed. Our neighbor's chicken has adopted my flock because of all the love and attention, has nothing to do with the food, 😂.
Thank you for rounding up a nice collection of information for us. I only have one chicken at the moment...she is not spoiled at all...lol But I will be increasing my little flock soon. Last couple of winters I fixed a heated water bowl for her. That seemed to really bring in mice into her pen. So this year I switched her metal water bowl to a plastic type of bowl with no heat. Not noticed any rodent visitation or residency. I take in her food every evening and bring out fresh in the mornings as well as dump the water each evening. Also down here in Southeast Texas, in warm weather snakes (chicken snakes/rat snakes) are a problem. I wouldn't mind them around if I didn't have chickens. But because they will eat eggs, baby chicks and even kill an adult chicken and try to eat it---I have put deer netting around the bottom of their chain link pen (10x10) up about 2' from the ground....leave it loose around the bottom. They get caught in it the little 1/2" squares. It is a big help for this area. There are videos on doing this. Love watching your videos when I get a minute. Thanks for all your help, Pres. Good job. Jesus bless.
I've never medicated my chicks..last year they got pox...my dogs n I were eaten up with mosquitos...i learned SO much about mosquitos...i seen they were having trouble swallowing started them on yogurt...we ALL ate yogurt😁 they survived the mess....this year I've been secretly throwing environmental friendly mosquito pods into my neighbors septic in ground pool..i realized that's where the bugs came from...just wanted to share in case someone can use that info..your entertaining thanks!!!
Hey rats are not nocturnal. I used to think they were too and that lifting the food to a metal feed bin at roosting time was enough to deter them from the hens environment. No. They are seen regularly morning, noon and night.,
Thanks for helping to keep them away from the chickens thanks! Oh and do they need a small portable fence cause my coop is mobile and I will put them over my garden can they dig slowly under it and escape ? Thanks !
Great video with lots of great advice! My dog jumped up on my bed and snuggled with me well I watched your video! I am making a video about thing two soon because she is feeling 100 percent and now she is even laying eggs! Thanks for helping me out! I don't think she would have made it this far without you! Kiki is soooo cute! My dog Molly loved your video!
I have had very good success with lighting up the area that I don’t want rats. I have pack rats here that are very destructive and adding light has been a game changer. My garden was devastated until I lined the perimeter with Christmas lights. My chicken coop had rats until I added light. GAME CHANGER
I swear its a new drama everyday over here with my chickens. Someone gets stuck in a bush. Someone gets stuck in a tree. Someones sick. Some stop eating, some sitting on nonexistenting eggs. Some(a lot of em) fighting each other. There's another rooster on the side of the road that I just CAN'T seem to ride by. I have to keep each of my flocks separate because I've got so many roosters at this point. If anyone knows where I can sell some roosters I'm all for it because my poor hens are stressed out.
I live in a subdivision that still has many vacant treed vacant lots. I have photographs of many predators including bob cats, raccoons, possums Farrell cats and rats. I have had only rats that were a nuisance. Poison was not a option. I have four security cameras so I can tell where they are. I installed a grandpa’s feeder and no food was ever left in the run. In about 2 months I caught 25 in a small live trap from Amazon. I rehomed them to a area where there were no homes. That has been two weeks ago and I have not saw any recently. I hope this helps your viewers. I order two traps. They were well worth the price.
Brand new, getting 6 pullets next Sunday, I feel your excitement. I want to do the things you recommend. I want those beautiful chickens! And eggs! Thank you!!!
Hello! New subscriber here from N. Texas! I am planning to get an Omlet Eglu go in the next month first. I also plan on getting 4 hens. Do you think the Omlet has enough ventilation? Thank you for all your informative videos!
You're so welcome! I used to have the bigger Eglu and I LOVED that coop. Wish I still had it. I never had the Go but I think the ventilation is probably good. In the bigger one, you can't really see it but there is ventilation under the roof.
We just got chickens here in CR. They are just little 🐥 chickpeas so we can’t tell what kind or sex or if they are egg bearing. We just wanted to start raising them. Thank you for such entertaining info!!
I'm getting three Buckeye hens soon. In this video you say the coop needs good ventilation but no drafts. How do I accomplish this? The coop I'm building will be about 42"x42"x36"Tall with an attached outdoor run. Thanks in advance.
Yay! Buckeyes are great chickens. :-) Try to get some cross ventilation above the where they roost. Or if the roosts are on one side of your coop put the ventilation above and on the opposite side. Does that make sense? Sometimes good plans will have good ventilation built in. Good luck!
One of my hens was taken by a fox and a couple days later the fox tried to take another hen right in front of me but my coop is right next to a wooded cow pasture so I cleared everything out except the actual trees so the fox has no way to be sneaky anymore, I also put out a live trap to move the fox to another area but something got in it assuming the fox because the next day the trap was upside down witch released the trap door and it escaped and I haven't seen any sign of it in over three months.
Yes! Just make sure the ashes don’t have any chemicals from fire logs or anything that would be bad for the birds. Here’s my video about it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-owJfzIDTuYs.html
I'm in a subdivision too. I've wanted a couple ducks but not sure if they are too loud. I have 6 chickens and nobody has complained about their clucking. Wondering if two ducks would be fairly quiet.
The hens can be pretty loud but it depends on the breed. I have one Call Duck and she's SO LOUD! My Runner Duck doesn't quack very often but when she ducks it travels LOL.
@@WelcometoChickenlandia Well, I could try it and if it doesn't work out, we have plenty of farms in the area that might be interested. Do they sleep with the chickens in the coop?
Mine do! Just be aware, ducks are SUPER messy. They are fun and I love them, but they make everything wet and poopy lol! I don’t want to discourage you because ducks are seriously so awesome, though. This video may help you: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Q6Z0J2mEmAw.html
I had a game hen that was roosting in a tree next to my rooster pen and hanging out in my yard. Every morning I would come out to a huge hawk sitting in the opposite tree. I chased the hawk away every day. Finally I stuck her in with my turkey and the hawk quit coming. Plus she was causing rooster fights haha. The hawk definitely had plans for her.
I have hundreds of roaches in the runs every night!!! Help. I keep the run clean. It is dry, but the rake does clean up all of the poop bits. I have already used DE. I was going to try a vacuum and then when the chickens wake up toss some roaches in the coop to hunt. Any thoughts?
I started to notice roaches last year, also mosquitoes were horrendous! Being in central Florida I know bugs are always a thing but since Ive been doing the following I have hardly any problems with pests! I clean out my coop and nesting boxes (entirely) once every 3 months. After sweeping everything out I spray the entire coop and nest boxes with a spray I made myself. *In a spray bottle I put an entire bottle of rubbing alcohol, 10 drops lavender, 10 drops lemon grass and 10 drops rosemary and top off the bottle with water.* Shake and then spray everything (roost bars, nest boxes, walls, etc.). Let it dry thoroughly and refill the coop floor with PDZ and sand and the nest boxes with hay. Now, it's very rare do I see a roach and mosquito are much more reduced... Plus everything smells fresh and clean. Edit: I thought you said coop... I re-read and realized you said run! I'm sorry I don't have remedy for that. Did you find anything by now that's helped?
I wouldn’t give Verm-X in water. There are specific dosing instructions on the bottle and it involves either mixing with their food or putting it on bread. There are pellets as well but I haven’t used those!
Hi, Verm x is a UK product and I can't seem to find it in the us. Where do you buy it? I saw a bottle on Amazon but I think it was price gouging because shipping was almost $20.00 minus the price. Thanks
Unfortunately, it's only sold on Amazon in the US. :-( And yes, the shipping is crazy expensive since it's coming from the UK. I'm really trying to find something comparable in the US, but so far, I really haven't found it. :-(
And my coop has some (a lot ) sharp point in the coop and me dad said they’ll be fine and I do not want them to get scratched and I don’t know how to get the sharp parts away and I don’t whant them to be scratched by the nails what do I do ? Thanks bye
@@WelcometoChickenlandia we have the ducklings here for our first night they have no heat lamp but have two glass jars full of boiling water in thick socks and a hot water bottle. Will they be warm enough?
Hey there, sorry for my late response on this. How are they doing? This is an older way of brooding chicks but it can work well. One way you could put your mind at ease would be to use a thermometer and make sure the temperature is appropriate. :-)
@@WelcometoChickenlandia so far they seem fine with just a hot water bottle lol But thanks for the thermometer idea. One also appears quite a bit bigger has darker down colour and a fatter bill so we suspect one is part buff duck!
Ok thanks it’s not real high though and there is lik ten on each side and there all one inch long we just noticed after we put the metal roof on thanks!
I'm more concerned about the fruit trees growing in my yard attracting vermin than my chickens. Do I need to pick up all fruit which falls to the ground and throw it away at the end of every day? I have raspberry bushes and a grape vine too! Yikes.
On forest, a resident black snake 11 ft mother, she eats cockroaches,mice..... however, looking for warm she wanted inside the hen house with red heat lamps....hens NOT amused!...snake now has a PVC pipe with heat Rock outside the hen house to watch for mice but not in sight of the hens. (We are not allowed roosters)
What is the best thing to use to get rid of chicken worms to kill chicken hormones in my chicken has worms how do I get rid of them without killing my chickens
Get rid of the rodents first and you will have fewer predators coming around for a rodent snack. Your feeders are rat buffets. The best feeder on the market is the ratproof chicken feeder, U.S. made in Oklahoma City on some models, other models are made in their shop in the Philippines. If you google ratproof chicken feeder you will find a ton of reviews on the feeder. It is quite distinctive, inward swinging door, the door has adjustable springs to pre load the door to prevent rats, even squirrels from pushing the door open. It has a narrow and distant treadle to prevent rodents ganging up on the treadle. No need to leave it open for training like the poorer designed and Chinese made competitors. Good content here, just missing the most crucial part.
Yeah, I used one for years until the rats figured out they could sit on the treadle arms and get up to the door. They had the audacity to stare at me from inside the rat proof feeder. They tunneled almost ten feet under a cement paver patio to come up through the dirt floor of my hen house. After using a lot of steel and copper mesh, construction foam, etc., we finally covered the entire floor with 1/4” welded wire and topped that with 1” thick pavers. All other openings larger than a nickel were sealed. Finally! No more rats in the hen house. It smells good again, girls are happy, I’m happy and the feed lasts a whole lot longer.
@@canyondiva493 You didn't have the spring tension set strong enough or the spring was missing. The treadle arms are 1/8" wide, I doubt that a rat could balance on them, and if they did without the leverage that comes from being far out on the treadle step it would be impossible for their weight to operate the door mechanism.
@@timsnow2204 yes they can balance on the arms and yes the spring tension was fine. These are fairly large rats; not cat sized but bigger than the average squirrel. You’d be amazed where they manage to balance themselves. I also enlisted the aid of a pest control guy and one of them managed to break one of his traps which he said he’d never seen happen before. I think what irks me the most is that this area is filled with oak trees, pecan trees, wild blackberries, etc., and with all that natural food they were compelled to try and get my chicken feed. No more! We’re winning the war!
Can you tell me where I can find Verm-X? It looks like it’s made in the UK, and has insane shipping cost online. I checked my local grange, but they didn’t have it. Thanks for all your wonderful advice!
😔 Thats the one problem with Verm-X, it’s expensive because of the shipping cost. I should have mentioned that in the video. I’m on the lookout for something comparable here in the US but just haven’t found it yet. Stay tuned! Sorry, should have mentioned the price/shipping issue in the video. ❤️
So I've always wondered this.. Why do people get mad when youtubers get sponsored? If it's because they make more money then what's the big deal? That's the point right in making videos in the first place? I understand some do it just out of love but most nowadays do it hoping to become the next big viral RU-vidr. I want everyone to make money so it doesn't bother me if they're sponsored or not.
My biggest problem is the rats I have traps for all the other predators. My neighbor let their Rats go in my yard and didn’t tell me until a couple of months later. So they multiplied. I thought I got rid of all of them but I was wrong. Yes I made the biggest mistake by getting rid of all the skunks and Raccoons. Don’t do it she is speaking the truth it disrupts the environment and you get rats.
First comment, you just showed one of my favorite animals which is a stout!!! I'm sorry there are chicken predator but they are so good at taking care of rodents it's unbelievable. ❤️
Hello mam, i got a question can chickens stay on concrete floor as i live in a city n only have my garage to have my chickens need some help as i really wanna have chicken as i use to have so many when i was younger. Please answer
They can stay on concrete. :-) It's always best for them to have some outside time, though. And just remember that overtime they will really cause some wear to the walls in your garage.
Welcome to Chickenlandia thanks for your response i saw in your other video and did the same i put some blinds and any way they are not painted only bricks
