This is the best video I have seen because this guy is genuine, confident and just overall real. He articulates in a way that’s not trying to hard and is just simply easy to understand. I like how he offers pros and cons and speaks from a non-biased stand point. I think I will end up really loving TX...I’m sure my girls will too!
@davidbonilla904
@davidbonilla904 2 года назад
I live in Puerto Rico and am seriously considering moving. What's funny to me is that all those "cons" are literally daily life here (which really isn't all that bad when you think about it, some of them even good). Only we have it worse because we're also in the line of fire for hurricanes and pay 3 times as much for electricity, yet it doesn't work properly on a regular day. Hurricane Maria left me and my family without electricity for 4 months!

Recently moved from TX to GA. There are many things that I love about Texas, but the 3 negatives for me were: high property taxes, increasing sprawl and traffic (DFW area), and the heat restricting how much time you can comfortably be outdoors.

I bought my land and built my home 25 years ago here in Texas,my wife and I are too old to start over but we are being forced to do just that as we are being forced to move out of our home that we love. I have lived here all of my life,I am a native Texan. My property taxes have skyrocketed because of all of the people moving here and now I cannot afford to pay the property taxes to stay in my home that I was going to retire and live out the remainder of my life. Why should I be forced into poverty and lose my home to rich snobs moving here who are screwing up our quality of life and driving up the price of everything? The property taxes alone is making it to where our young people who do not have rich parents to foot the bill cannot afford to pay rent nor own a home of their own here in the new state of Taxes/California! We native Texans who are retired simply cannot avoid moving out of Texas because our corrupt Local Governments and Criminal Governor is getting rich off this criminal and immoral process of gentrification!

Retired Native Texan who shares your concern but Gov Abbott is not the problem. Our property taxes are local county and city taxes. We have had better economies in tough times with Republican leadership. The problem is out of state buyers willing to pay over inflated prices jacking up appraisals then dragging their Blue state politics, that ruined their home state, with them.
@mediterraneanworld
@mediterraneanworld Год назад
The fundamental reason that property taxes are so high is that Texas does not have a state income tax; it's one of only seven states in the nation without one. Instead, we pay for government through two main sources of revenue: sales tax and property tax.

Moved from California to Texas about two years ago. I am in a low humidity small town in NW Panhandle, the bugs are no joke and dangerous, but wearing shoes, and bug spray, and keeping them out of your home isn't that difficult. Scams in Texas are a big problem since there is little to no protection for an average citizen and Texas likes to take advantage of this in real estate, rentals, and even utility companies. It's absolutely a buyer beware state. Also, the irrigation is nonexistent, there are no drain pipes, no gutters, and nothing to help the water flow when it rains hard. The last thing I would point out is the drivers... they have some very dangerous habits while driving but luckily nearly every road is flat and straight as far as the eye can see.
@pravachan4355
@pravachan4355 Год назад
There is very good irrigation in the Houston area. It floods sometimes because: 1. In the old neighborhoods the homes are not build up from the street height. 2. The rain pours down too heavily and it overwhelms the drainage. Like during Harvey we got 52" of rain in like a 2-3 days, and the hurricane was stationary and that is the only time I have seen that. I would stay away from neighborhoods that have previously flooded.
@WAN2TREE4
@WAN2TREE4 Год назад

Just moved to Texas and, the heat is pretty bad, bugs yes, here in Central Texas, alot of Crickets, and there us lots of scamming going on with rentals. I would look the address up and it would be a vacant lot... There are people that help you look for rentals and they get paid from the Apartment complexes. Another thing us, the renting can be difficult, which I think happened after covid. This heart beat rule is ridiculous!

Grew up inside the loop (in-town-urban living)in H-town, over thirty-five years plus! This once was a good place to be despite the weather and lack of scenic beauty. I understand many-many-many people are moving here. And, this is the exact reason that Houston is no longer a friendly place to be. Crime, construction, and traffic are a nightmare. I can't wait to get out of here and will sell this summer. If you like an uber big city with tons of crime, traffic, heat, and humidity then keep coming here.
@mediterraneanworld
@mediterraneanworld Год назад
Ha-ha we joked that we needed our passports to go outside the loop! The traffic and the gentrification (of already gentrified neighborhoods) not to mention terrible schools are inexcusable in a city so dynamic and with such resources but has always neglected public education.

I moved to an area northeast of DFW/McKinney two years ago to retire. Here are my observations: 1) If you follow the law and do the right things, Texas is going to give you a great life 2) If you do not follow rules or laws, Texas is not a place for you and will give you a horrible life 3) If you choose not to assimilate to the Texas way of life or respect it, you will be miserable here 4) If you don't know what a Homestead Exemption is, learn about it and apply for one tooth sweet 5) If you have a dog your dog will be very happy! Dog parks are everywhere in all communities 6) If you haven't visited a Bucee's yet, you are not a true Texan! 7) A majority of TX in the north is in Tornado Alley. Have a plan and be prepared for crazy weather 8) TX homes require a lot of routine maintenance (HVAC, pest control, etc...). Budget accordingly 9) Texans in general are not very vocal. But if you bring up politics on your own, expect an earful 10) TX humidity isn't that bad and only lasts roughly four months of the year. Budget your AC expense Finally, if you are a 100% disabled veteran Texas is the best place to be and is also the best kept secret. 100% disabled veteran's receive a free DOL, free vehicle plates and are exempt form ALL TEXAS PROPERTY TAXES!

My wife and I are Northern Illinois transplants (moved here for my job). We went through Harvey without flood damage but the flooding trapped us inside our subdivision. My avatar is "Buddy" who is a feral stray (aka "street dog") who wandered to our street as he was watching some kids play with a ball. We ended up rescuing him and was told by the vet he was born sometime during Harvey. A really important thing to do when considering Houston is to research flood maps and flood damage for prospective subdivisions. Bear in mind nearby large reservoirs and newer drainage sewers are super important (they tend to be higher capacity). We love Houston so much and it is our forever home, we are now proud and happy Texans.

I grew up in the mountains as well and yes I do miss them. My son lived in Seabrook and the Apt he lived in was right on the water and at the time his rent was really low compared to where we live in Virginia. That apt would have been 4 times as much here in the hampton Roads area. It’s so weird because I’m by the water and during Harvey, none of us got flooded but Houston did for what seems like the first time ever! So when you said, it hovered over Houston, I finally get it.

@@LivinginHoustonTX does no state tax really make up for the property taxes? I am in California and your area is on our short list of destinations, but the property taxes are the main reason we are hesitant. That and hurricanes, but it Is just getting crazy here in Cali. so we are wondering if no state tax but high property tax won't be much different from what we pay here in Cali. that at the end of the day, are we really going to be doing better in Texas financially than here in Cali? Our current home of just over 2,000 sq. ft. Is worth over $700,000 here and a house around the corner from us just sold for $730,000. We are just simply scared of the property taxes there in TX. We are mid and late 40's with 2 boys 10 and 2. Schools are VERY important and I am fond of the outdoors (grew up camping, boating etc). My wife not so much the outdoors camping type, but does like to take the boys to do fun outdoor activities so long as it isn't the roughing it camping. She seems to have her eye on The Woodlands/Spring area

Thank you about the mosquito advice, I am the one in the family that gets eaten alive. I have spent time in west Houston and Georgetown, so friendly. The weather (both the heat and the depressing grey winters) and distances (driving and really bad roads) are probably the worst thing. People are nice but I think that has something to do with everyone being from somewhere else - and needing to fit in as well as well as make new friends and contacts.

2 important adds: traffic and change. If traffic bothers you, Houston or any of Texas large cities will drive you bonkers. And you should be aware that the entire state is constantly re-inventing itself...cattle, energy, medicine, tech... Who knows what is next, but it will be different. I lived in Texas for 30+ years, so I am not just a casual or newfound observer. Now I live in New Zealand; total multi-island nation population about the same as Houston metro area. And I'd appreciate it if you all didn't decide to move HERE!!

2 points: 1. We do have mountains, you just have to travel far west towards Big Bend/Guadalupe mountains national parks and they won’t be as big as the ones from Idaho but still beautiful. 2. It’s not humid in all of Texas. In fact, most of Texas isn’t that humid to be honest. It’s pretty much just the eastern side. The more you travel west the less humid it is. If you’re looking for drier climates, El Paso is a great spot. It was rated the safest city in the country at one point a couple years ago. Texas is a very diverse state in terms of landscapes. Other than that this video is pretty accurate.

No vacancy here! Stay away! Too many people, and people are getting grouchy 'cause of the 24/7 rush hour traffic. If you are not in the right lane or going under 65 mph on the freeways, you're dead. May 2022, 94 to 95 degrees already. In some areas, no one speaks English. There is some Big Money here, and if you don't have some of it, it's hard to find decent houses or apartments. Need gasoline? Plan on taking an hour of your time. Pull out of drive, red light 1, red light 2, get gas, the credit card thing won't give you a receipt, go inside the store, etc. Live in a beautiful subdivision? A bit calmer but $$$$, and you drive and drive, and drive to get to anywhere. Pack a lunch and dinner or like I have done if I have to go across town for a meeting, appointment, I stay in a motel rather fight 24/7 rush hour traffic where I get in the wrong lane and the 18 wheeler is on my tail and I have to drive to San Antonio to turn around and come back. You'll see. Good things: If you are wanting to taste food from countries you've never heard of, come on down. If you want a service, specialist, or to buy something and it exists, you can find it here. Be prepared to spend the day driving in 24/7 rush hour to get it. Need a doctor? There are specialists here for diseases you didn't know existed. Make an appointment, drive and drive and try and try to park, and remember where you car is; then wait 2+ hours to see doctor. Bring something to do and eat or curl up in the waiting room chair and sleep. Welcome to Texas, ya all. Sincerely, A Native. Oh BTW if you are from New Jersey or certain boroughs in New York, we love you, but ditch the accent and learn to talk like us, through you nose. You'll do a lot better.

Skeeters are no joke in Texas! We're in Fort Worth and Off Deep Woods bug spray is my perfume all of late spring & through the summer! If your home or apt. is near any body of sitting water (ponds, lakes, creeks, etc.) the more they'll be around the area. Those zapper fly swatters help in the house too.

I enjoy the videos. I grew up close to Houston. We lived in a big house, considered a mansion. I met many people, made new friends. They really are friendly, warm. I was somewhat shy. The summers are something. Thunderstorms almost daily. I'd explore searching for creatures like frogs, toads, lizards, green ones that change colors found around Houston. The cicadas are amazing. Their music in the trees. The sound is reminiscent of the South. I crossed some anthills as a kid and poked them which revealed fire ants. They can sting. Armadillos are almost everywhere. Dead on the roads. I lived in California for over 30 years. It wasn't the same. The climate is drier, mountains are close by. People are somewhat harder to meet. There's homeless people I avoid. Houses are smaller. More are stucco and wood. I saw reports of people leaving California for places like Utah and Texas. A big migration taking place. They left because of cost and the fires. I recently took a trip to Texas and stayed at my sister's house. It had been so long. I couldn't get over how the houses were spread out and bigger. Everything's bigger in Texas. We passed a river said to contain a few alligators. It felt like the southeast. I'm a new subscriber and enjoy watching as I look into possibly moving into a small house or townhouse. The heat is something to get used to during summer.
