I appreciate you putting me in your artists category 😝 can’t say I necessarily suffer from perfectionism in my journal to the level you talked about in that section, but it certainly does hold people back!

You said “fancily.” 👏🏽 With the scratch paper idea, I have a pack of Post-It notes for that same reason. Best explanation of Bulletin Journal I’ve seen yet. And yes, you need a digital calendar - the bullet journal just doesn’t have alarms or the ability to share events with the whole family or hyperlink your online events.

3:41....I use a pocket field notebook for this tip..... scratch ideas, to do lists, inventory lists, quotes, appointments, contacts..etc. then transfer them all , nicely into my home bujo.

Good advice. I used a bullet journal for a couple of years, but now I use a planner (6-ring A-5) where I print 1-page daily inserts. I create them myself so they fit my needs. All pre-purchased stuff need tweaking and adjustments. I do a month at a time and and that is ok. Needs change as the seasons change. Mine is not fancy. I use clip art when printing, but from then on, just a pen and colored markers for color coding as I review. White-out helps when scratching out mistakes. Fancy setups takes too much time!

Basically all your points, is exactly why I decided to start with Ryder's method, and his method only. This was about 5 years ago, and by this day I have adapted his method and his updates to this to my own ways. And it truely makes a difference for me. Its all mine now. And its simple, i dont really even think about it anymore i just journal

I am intending to begin bullet journaling. I've watched several videos showing various styles including the very plain, everything is basically a list, beginner style. I have realized that making everything a list won't work for me visually. Having too much art would be just as bad. I have been making a rough draft of spreads and also trying to figure out the most important things I want to keep track of. Currently, my life isn't that busy so, there would be less emphasis on scheduling and events. I do want to encourage myself more to get into a more productive routine that more fully incorporates working towards my goals.

Something that really made me try to make everything perfect all the time was not wanting to feel like I messed up a fancy journal and what helped was getting a pack of 60 page a5 composition notebook type journals that had construction paper for the cover and was sown for the binding. It felt way more fancy and if I made a spread that I didn't like I could turn the page without feeling like I just ruined something or wasted a page and it allowed for a lot more learning what does and doesn't work for me and become more comfortable with squiggles on the page before moving back into the fancy journals

A tip to add to your reflection: go through your RU-vid watch history😉 Especially for interests and the things you’re procrastinating on.

I quit, and then saw some of my responsibilities and goals dwindled. The struggle for me was real, and perfectly illustrated in this video. Even so, even in that struggle, and making an honest attempt at it had many positive effects.

I came across the Hobonichi weeks layouts & super clicked with it. Don't have the budget for a Hobonichi but been just been manually doing the weekly layout on the left page of a journal that already had and I like having the right page be a habit-tracker for the week, checklist of weekly goals, and then free space for whatever notes need to write down. Only downside is sometimes do want to take important notes that might span multiple pages and will want to refer to later so having notes interrupt weekly spreads & weekly spreads interrupting notes is less-than-ideal. Investing in a Kinbor weeks planner (more affordable hobonichi copycat) for next year because I know that the weekly format works for me and I like having the calendars for the whole year and a note section in the back for keeping more longterm notes organized. Prior to that was using a weekly planner for over a year and really helped me keep organized but didn't like the lack of space for notes in old planner which is why switched to current bullet journal which turned to just consistently imitating the same planner layout every week.

Pre planning. Like I have a July page started on a certain page, and weekly pages laid out for June, with no room to just make more lists or whatnot for June. All learning along the way.

I really wish I'd found your video earlier !! This is easily the best video that captures the essence of what bullet journaling is 🙌 and how to do it right. I started my own journey with bullet journaling with artsy spreads that I thought were a must and then realised how much of a perfectionist it was making me. Then I moved on to more minimal spreads but I would still get overwhelmed and couldn't journal consistently.I tried all kinds of spreads like the allastaire log & frankenlog which I love for their sheer Creativity. But I still fell of my habit. And in the past few days I've been contemplating Starting a bujo again , but felt really wary about getting overwhelmed.Untill I watched this video and realised that my problem was not identifying what exactly I even needed my Bujo for , I always made monthly spreads, calenders and to do lists and weekly logs because thats what I thought you were supposed to do. I was still too locked into what people told me Bullet journaling looked like for them after years of trial and error , but I never did that for mystery and just assumed that their final evolved and tweaked spreads would work for me. Now Im eager to start it from scratch again and will be following your advice, that is starting from rapid logging for a few days and then making an experimental spread for 1 week ONLY and reviewing what worked and what didnt in for that spread as well as myself in my life. I feel like I'm definitely going to come back and refer to your video in the future too. You got yourself another subscriber !☺️☺️

I began to use the Bullet Journal method in 2017 focusing on making it a tool for my workplace. My boss at that time was very stict so, even if I'm an illustrator myself and I would have loved to doodle on the pages, I had to make my journal a tool to keep track of my daily tasks, one that was easy to fill and to check out if the task was done. After that, I've tried to make the fancy colorful spreads but somehow I felt like it wasn't helping at all. I even removed sections that the author mentioned such as the year calendar because focusing on each month was easier for me. To each their own. If people want to draw, add tons of stickers and washis then that's up to them but in my case, the simpler the better. All my BuJos are ugly 😅 and focus only on keeping track of my productivity, I don't need to add a Netflix tracker or pictures. In that case, I prefer to use my personal journal instead.

Making the tiny calendars. Set up a Bullet Journal in 2016. Was so tired of it after set up, I didn’t touch it after. Now on year 2 with Bujo, because my favorite planner changed. I have never made and will never make a tiny calendar again. Plus, I started with the bare minimum and added as I found a need. Trackers are a big no, though.

If you clear your browser cache and refresh, you should be able to sign in. I just fixed that issue today (1-1-2024). If you're still having issues after doing that, try it again in an incognito window. Appreciate the heads up! The problem snuck in during my last update and I didn't realize it until now. If you're still having issues, I'm available at tyler@switchback.tech
