Just a few notes: The Seal Performance will do 0-100 in 3.8 (yes under 3.9) every day of the week so I don't know what you did wrong. The only MG with a LFP battery is the base (best buy too) and the only one you can charge to 100% like the BYD. So basically you get the same usable KW as the next model up. The Seal(s) are far nicer finished inside than any of the MGs. If you drive a Seal you'll want to own one. Most reviewers do not drive one long enough to work out all the tricks to making it almost perfect (for the money) and a car you just want to drive. Pro tip: Some Aussie power plans now offer 3 hours per day all you can eat free power. This means 700km/week of free driving.
The Seal Performance made my head spin when I launched it during a test drive 🤣 First time I was in a car with such acceleration and I loved it. Just a shame the footwell is so high compared to the seating position. I wouldn't want to drive it for longer trips. The Atto 3 on the other hand... 😍
Nah I doubt it I have byd dolphin for almost 3 years battery just went broke...it won't start and charge....after sale is worse...I have already complained this to byd
Took over Tesla? 🤣 sure did with beat Everybody with cars that are unsafe, catch on fire and most of all supported by an evil regime that profits from forced human organ harvesting! Yeah! Not something to be proud of! 🩸🇨🇳💉🩸🇨🇳💉
I think my GWM Ora extended range got the first spot in my heart, I got it for $39,990 only with less than 1500km on the clock..the booth space is a bit small for people who need to carry a lot of stuff everyday, but it’s enough for us to haul a week’s worth of groceries for 4 people with no problems
Congratulations that with this purchase you have strengthened the Chinese dictatorship, which is working together with Russia to dismantle democracies worldwide. I will never understand something like that.
What a nonsensical review here. Bad headline too. I've driven a MG ZS EV Long range Luxury edition since december 2021 and I have to say: All lies. Best car I've ever driven, by far, and I've driven many rentals and lease-cars and whatnot. This review is simply incorrect. We barely have to charge the thing with its 69.9 kWh battery. What pleases me most about this car is that we can enter and leave the seats without needing to squeeze anything, it's so roomy and silent, it is fast too, at stoplights here in NL we pass by all others, I really don't see a flaw with it, aside from perhaps some efficiency because it is a little heavier and less streamlined. But here in NL we're not allowed to drive faster than 120 km/h anyway, mostly even 100 km/h max, so all speeds beyond that are useless.
Check your battery health, you’ll be disappointed you want to sell it off quickly. Ive own a lot of cars, this is the worst I’ve ever owned. The range is bad, body noise , steering rack issues, sunroof, a lot goes on. Chinese cars are a scam. Got it brand new drove just 10k miles
I have sat in all these cars, and as I am 6’4” tall and in my seventies, there are only 2 that I can sit in comfortably. The BYD Atto 3 and the GWM Ora. All the others even the Dolphin feel incredibly small inside. The MG4 is like sitting in a pregnant skateboard! The Ora was ok, only 2 of us and a dog so not worried about space, but the GWM dealer in Hallam, Vic was more interested in selling Tank 300 than talk to me about electric cars. So we left them all and went home.
All the batteries are fine. BYD batteries go in the Berlin made Tesla's. GWM have had their own battery subsidiary for decades, who do a lot of research. MG have great batteries too it seems. Only one's I've ever heard could be dodgy were LG Chem batteries (e.g. in the GM Volt). There have been 6 EV fires in Australia.... 2 were arson, 3 were when the house caught fire first, and one was just a battery pack left out in the rain. ICE are 20x more likely to catch fire.
@@stormjuice I've seen heaps of EV fires, the difference is ICE won't self combust in the garage while you're sleeping and they're a whole lot easier to put out.
@@justice4g Combustion cars can and do burn while off, to the point that some BMW models had advice from BMW to not park them in your garage. Yes, EVs are harder to put out if the main battery goes into runaway, but they burn a whole lot less. Also you've seen loads of EV fires? Do you mean youtube videos, or actually seen? Cause there have been really very few EV fires. I've seen one (hybrid), but it was arson. There are loads of cheap ebike/scotter etc battery fires as they are often not standards compliant and don't have proper management but that doesn't equate to EVs.
@@justice4gyou have seen those Evs caught online because they get an unfair media (mass or social) coverage while ICE cars catching fires don’t. I used to think like you until my own parents in law’s 6 month new Subaru SUV had an electric system issue which resulted in frying and smoking and the car was totalled. They told me that luckily the car was not parked in the garage or near anything that would catch fire easily. After that incident they started telling me all the ICE cars catching on fire stories and almost everyone they talked to knows someone who had an issue in this category, and the rate of ICE cars having such problems is way higher than we are aware of.
In my opinion, you should have mentioned the battery chemistry of the MG4 in your #1 position as being a 64kWHr battery as being NMC and not LFP. This is a huge dereliction on behalf of MG. For the uninitiated, an NMC - Nickle Manganese Cobalt battery - should only be charged to 80% not 100% like the battery in an Atto 3 for instance and has the potential to be a fire risk. There have been many EV fires with this battery chemistry and when I ordered my Atto 3 two years ago, it was the first thing I checked to make sure it wasn't an NMC traction battery. THIS REALLY IS A BIG DEAL.
MG4 51kWh should do very well this year, and i would seriously consider one in volcano orange. But BYD will bring their cheap Dolphin 60kWh this year so could get interesting
BYD is better finished inside but both are great value. The MG is RWD this is better all else being equal. The 51 is the only 4 to buy due same type of battery as BYD.
Gotta agree. Not in Australia, but the MG4 is the absolute tops. I chose the 51 kwh battery because that goes far enough for me on a daily basis, but if you do longer trips, go for the same trim in the 64 kwh. There's no contest.
I'm more of a sedan guy, so I tend to gravitate towardst the BYD Seal. In Aussie, the base Dynamic starts at 49,888 which is pretty compelling. It is heavy though, near 2 tonnes, which makes something like the Ora (Funky Cat) very interesting for weighing "only" 1500kg. That's positively feather-weight for an EV. Overall I agree with the list, but might put the Seal Premium at the top of the list.
@@mondotv4216 yes and no. Tesla RWD has a 60kwh battery and weighs just under 1800kg. The Seal Dynamic has a 61kwh battery and is just over 1900kg. So similar battery and the Seal is a little heavier. Seal and Model 3 have near identical dimensions also. The higher range Seal does go well over 2 tonnes, and is therefore much heavier than the Model 3 LR and Performance
It would be top of my list too, but the low ground clearance might be a deal killer for me. A driveway at work already catches the front of my Leaf, Seal would be painful there. But the Premium looks the goods, arguably a better deal than the Tesla especially at the price. We have the Atto 3 and love it.
@@nadnerb2k my sister runs the Atto 3. They love it as they have 2 kids and run solar panels. They don't pay for power or fuel! The interior is a little too funky for me, and I like sedans so it's the Seal for me. I wonder if the bit that sticks out under the front lip can be removed to increase ground clearance. Guess I'll find out soon! Take delivery of my Seal Dynamic next week.
The lower priced MG4 in Thailand sells for $29,735 Aud drive away price. At the moment other than perhaps for China, I think Thailand is the best place to buy an EV.
The Lithium Phosphate Iron battery safety & ability to charge to 100% on a regular basis with little degradation, gives the BYD Atto3 & Dolphin a big advantage over the other cars you reviewed.
@@robertkubrick3738No. The liquid electrolyte is the flammable part. This is what is usually the problem. But if you are scared about a flammable material in your vehicle, then why would you ever drive an ICE vehicle again?? EV fires are extremely rare. Only because the media hyper focuses on EV fires does not mean that that they are a common thing.
The MG4 is so behind the times with it's software and safety, laggy old fashioned infotainment on a basic small screen. 6 airbags instead of 7 minimum in modern cars. The base MG4 safety features are much fewer than the next grade. BYD and other car manufacturers do not put a premium on keeping you alive in a crash. BYD Dolphin is #1
Probably because the Chinese probably think the MG is a British car, much as a lot of Europeans do. In Europe that fallacy helps sell the car, but in China that perception is probably a detrement. The Chinese when buying an EV prefer Chinese EVs.
On the MG site I just looked at they say you can buy a new MG car (petrol no doublt) for 19,990AUD. I couldn't find an electric car there under 42,000AUD. Maybe EVs are loaded with too much computer stuff and display screens etc making them too expensive for people to buy. The price difference could buy years worth of petrol. Not hard to work out why the percentage of new EVs been sold is less than 10%.
the battery is what adds to the cost. The ICE have just as much electronics and software going on. It's the fuel, service costs (well, not with MG... very expensive imho) that you save on (massively, especially if you have solar)
MG stands for Morris Garages, the name chosen by MG's founder Cecil Kimber as a show of respect for his then boss, William Morris. Cecil's vision to produce world-class sports cars quickly became a reality, and by the 1930s, MG cars were winning races across Britain and Europe and is now owned by SAIC and has its headquarters in the United Kingdom, with production in China, Thailand (since 2016), and India (since 2019) but the primary design was based at the Longbridge, Birmingham headquarters. The studio is based in a newly renovated building in the heart of London on Marylebone Road. “A completely new product on the electric car scene. A fresh, elegant and refined model that combines practicality and style”. This is how Oleg Son, Chief Designer of MG, describes the MG4, the latest zero-emission model presented by the Chinese. Volvo, polestar and Lotus are also now owned by chinese automakers. Gwm Ora, BYD, Xpeng, Geely, Chery, Nio, Changan, Aiways, Huawei, AITO, HIPHI, and Zeekr are all locally designed and manufactured in China.
Click bait! All your positives about the Ora and it’s 6th on the list? Come on man! Throw it a bone. It’s about what you rate the car, not what you think people want. Becomes a self fulfilling prophecy!
@@CarSauce Boot is the only impracticality. Lacks the height space the others have. Surely there’s more to a car’s practicality though? Is it the major determinant to a car being good on a list? 🤷♂️
@@Matt-vq8jz I'm with you. I reviewed the MG4 and the Ora, and had actually pre-ordered an MG4 based on the UK rave reviews. After driving it and finding out more about it for my review (like the crazy service costs), I cancelled the order. When I reviewed the Ora, I didn't expect to fall in love with it tbh, but I did, and bought one (HI VLTG if you see me around Perth). Fantastic car, and definitely the best value for money (if you don't have to lug tonnes of gear around, of course... even then, the back seats fold down and it's a cavernous interior).
I ordered the Ora after having it for 5 days changing it for an old nissan leaf . My wife who is Chinese loved it so as she’s the boss I couldn’t say no 😂
I have driven the MG ZS EV Mk1 and the basic Ora and they are both excellent cars. As you comment, the Ora could do with a bigger boot. The range of both is perfectly adequate for city cars. The second-hand MG ZS EV Mk1s are very good value. More advanced cars are coming on to the market but these cars still do their job and do it well. It is true the MG ZS EV is built on a multi-setup platform which can be used for petrol, plug in hybrid or BEV but it is still pretty efficient and hopefully the common platform will make it easier to obtain the parts that are common to the ZS EVs and the ZS petrol cars. Both the Mk1 and the Ora have plenty of power compared to smelly cars.
MG4 is the most fun to drive, can go around a marked 45km corner at 80km plus, fully planted and controlled 50/50 weight and rear wheel drive. Everyone goes on about battery range when really the issue is bladder range, and mine is about 2 hours, also most highway codes recommend 15 min break every 2 hrs.
We own a Lexus CT200h hybrid and I love that it has tech but it feels and drives like a real normal car. Guess we will keep it a lot longer after all Toyota/Lexus vehicles just last a long time.
Yes, Xpeng Motors is the best Chinese brand, which is made internationally, very effectively! Many othets vrands search oriblems by not controlling things as Tesla or Xpeng Motors do!
Love the reviewes I have a long range mg4 the handling is fantastic it's extremely comfortable with heated seats and steering wheel goes way quicker than it needs to be i charge it for free with solar. Power my office for a couple of days a week with the vl2 capability. Real world get 440km range and on a salaray sacrifice its a no brainer. Is it perfect no but i have a LandCruiser for all the other stuff 😊
Meanwhile ASEAN people are drooling over these cheap Chinese EVs and keep saying Chinese brands are superior because they offer low price with good performance and build quality, meanwhile Japanese brands are stingy and their quality is getting worse, pfftt
because the Japanese legacy brands are wedded to ICE, and are desperately trying to convince everyone that hydrogen liquid fuel is the way of the future (when it isn't), just to keep their industry and supply chains going. The auto industry in Japan is HUGE, and when they start going bust, there's going to be major recessions not just there, but everywhere.
Incase you don't know, Chinese government subsidized these 'cheep' cars, it eplains why people in some regions cannot buy it, they would destory your local car industry.
MG4 is terrible user interface 1- Head light can’t go off while the car is on. To turn all lights off you must to turn the car off. 2- car windows don’t raise up when you lock the car (MG said car don’t have this functionality 😕) 3- if the head lights is on and you lock the car the lights will still on. ( I believe we figured it out back on 90’s but this smart car don’t know) 4- The system doesn’t save. To drive using one pedal mode and eco. I do need this every time. (4 slow steps to get there) 5- Car Play keeps disconnecting even with genuine cable 6- If the car is charging and I lock it when I do unlocked makes a loud beep and wake up everyone around. 7- Inside light led turn on when you turn the head light on very annoying drive at night with that you your face.
Very misleading clickbait title. Some people, like me, skip the intro and then it just looks like you are trashing all Chinese EVs. Don't you want people to watch your videos?
What a bunch of CRAP : its slow but its fast - its quirky but its wonderful - its small but roomy - its cheap but good - it has lots of problems but easy to live with - its inadequate but delivers . Help me buy a new car : I DO NOT THINK SO
I just have an Aston Martin DB12 V8 £225K the the BYD seal pissed over my car also the Tesla 3 Y model did it too. I thought Aston Martin may going to offers free likes shoes , cap, clothing etc.maybe free surgery all Aston Martin driver looked alike Daniel C .😂😂😂😂😢😢😢🎉🎉
Found the reviews really interesting - but somewhat of a contradictory title?? 'Avoid these cheap Chinese vehicles', yet your no.1 on the list is one of the best EVs you've driven?? Have to agree with that, as I own an MG4 Long Range Trophy and it's terrific. Have to agree with you over the MG4 X Power - totally defeats the object of the range and in reality is completely impractical. But come on - why openly state 'AVOID' when you get so excited about the top one - the MG4 has been a game changer right from the off. Avoid and regret avoiding more like....
Isn't the big problem with the MG4 the LKA which Robert Llewellyn described as an unruly 5 year old trying to grab the steering wheel? 😅 Plus you have to turn it off every time you hop in the car.
That, unfortunately, is an issue in most modern cars (ICE or EV), as they want to all be 5-star ANCAP rated, so the stupid over-active Nanny is installed. Matt said as much in his Mahindra review (it doesn't have the stars, because of the stupid safety nanny ANCAP want now).
I've had an MG4 for some weeks now. Done 2000km and I've never had a problem with the LKA. I think it might have been fixed at the last software update. It's a terrific car.
Greeting from UK 🇬🇧 A month ago I bought MG4 Long Range 64 kWh, oh man I love that car it’s just amazing! Price paid : 20 000£ Brand new! 😊 Subscribed! 🫡 Keep up the good work!
The cruel truth is that the EV market is developing. They all have some faults. It’s a process of finding cars which suit different sectors. The MG 4 is the obvious pick. It’s innovative and sort of picks up on the way MG used to build cars. Nice handling, good appearance, value for money and all important just enough compromises to make it affordable for the average punter. (Think MG TC, TD, MGB)
In Europe, these chinese EVs are also called "breadcrumb cars". You can see where they are, by following the trail of all the parts they lost from the moment they left the showroom...
Really? Here in Europe there are only a few Chinese luxury electric cars in the higher price range, they have not too many chances. “Cheap” e-cars are being prepared by European manufacturers. Buy Chinese to destroy our jobs and support the Chinese dictatorship, why?
I am loving my first gen Tesla model 3 from the first batch in 2019. Almost 5 years and no dramas or maintence or any probs really. Even charges fast at home on 2 phase. I find the chinese and Korean cars quirky and plasticy. No thanks. BTW MG has almost nothing to do with the old MG cars in looks, style or anything really. It is sad.
But battery car, living in Australia. Is it even possible to travel across the country? Can't be charging stations along the dirt roads. Since it's the outbacks, no power in the dessert. So staying only in the city, you may go cheaper with a scooter. I'm sorry but thinking about Australia road trains and ICE 4x4, there is a reason for it. And then battery tools die we all know that, but this toy costs like a house.
@@CarSauce don’t be sad. But, have a different title ;p Ps we still love you, just not this title. “Which Chinese brands should you avoid and which ones should be on your list”
Exactly. It wears continental’s best summer tyres in china. I dont know why BYD decided to use conti’s eco tyres for other markets. Eco tyres on a car that goes from 0-100 im 3.8 seconds!
When there is nothing to do to stop them because European and USA ev are so outdated and so expensive the only thing left is to try to push them down. A disgrace of video.
avoid ANY chinese car especially EV ..how easy do you think , given they are always changing spec, will it be to get parts for one in a year /2 /5 years ...we like to keep our cars and get some practical use out of them ...but the chances of getting parts for these down the track is suspect. My Toyota Hilux will be no problem for years to come.
The one that planning to put mobile toilet as add-on? And from my life experience, all things build by BAIC is trash, including those Mercedes they manufactured.
"I'll never buy a Chinese car! How would you know the build quality! Must be a snail on wheels! What if in a few years time it's a dud? Use your money wisely mate!" - Man on a 4-year waitlist for a $100k bog stock Land Cruiser built in Thailand.
If BYD want the crown of cheapest EV in Australia, LET US HAVE THE BYD SEAGULL. There's always some marketing genius who prevents us having the good stuff in Oz.
MG 4 Excite 51 - Cheapest EV to have rear multi-link suspension, BYD Dolphin needs to be on a more expensive model to have multi-link or go torsion beam. MG 4 Essence 64 - Sweet spot of the range, no point trying to save money to get Excite 64 where few thousand dollars will give you a lot more in the Essence - most importantly climate control AC.
