Mine is staying closed there are two vents inside and the fan creates negative pressure to suck heat out this was from Mr Otori a Japanese engineer at Sony who helped build the console

There's two little openings along the side of the SSD bay. The PS5 fan pulls the heat out of those two openings (in a vacuum fashion). The cover itself acts more as a heat shield protecting the SSD from the inner PS5 heat that the fan is sucking out and spinning around under the white shell/ plate before dispersing out of the back and top of the PS5 (so that heat isn't being thrown directly onto the SSD in the bay). The SSD plate/ cover aside from protection the SSD from heat & being used to create the vacuum effect. It also protects the SSD bay from dust accumulation as well.

You are correct about the openings but the air between the black case and white plates is cool external air brought in by the fan not warm air. By keeping the lid on all you are doing is making the vacuum design less effective. With the lid off, air can still be sucked out by the fan but it can also escape on it's own too. Plus the cool air being drawn in through the black vents at the front by the fan will make direct contact with the SSD heatsink itself, instead of only the lid. Dust wise it's no problem, just needs to be cleaned when the rest of the console is, the same way you'd have to inside a PC build.

That tiny screw inside the SSD expansion bay that holds the spacer is vary hard to remove. I think possibly that screw was stripped by the manufacturer or a poor quality screw. Right now I’m going to purchase a precision Phillips screwdriver to hopefully unfasten the screw so I can install my new SSD firecuda 530 4TB

That's the problem I'm having. When I first removed the top to unscrew it the spacer screw looked a little stripped and I kept thinking I did it but I hadn't even got to that screw. I've seen a bunch of reddit post of people having the same problem and when I asked a PlayStation group on Facebook if anyone had any problem people were acting like I was using the wrong screwdriver or turning the wrong way (which I wasn't I had a #01 Phillips and I know right tighty left loosey lol)

@@PoodleKush With the precision screwdriver that I purchased, had to be very careful when losing the screw as a matter of fact once I was able to loosen the screw enough I used my fingers to loosen it the rest of the way so I could safely remove it. The process required too much work only because it was screwed in too tight and the quality of the screw was cheap.

1:12 So the dust thing really isn't an issue as you should be opening the console to clean it regularly anyway. If you look on the side of the SSD slot facing the back of the console, you'll see two slots in the plastic which are designed to allow the main fan to draw heat out of the bay. By removing the lid you'll be aiding this process as the heat can escape from the bay easier and then be drawn by the console fan. In testing the large Sabrent heatsink gave the best cooling results and it's too big to allow the plate to go on top... So that supports it.

Dust doesn’t affect ssd performance. A lot of laptops and macs have open vent holes right by the ssd. Also the PS5 has vent holes everywhere dust will get into your ssd and everywhere even with ssd cover on. It’s rare for a game console to break from dust build up, so don’t worry about dust. You can blow into your console to remove dust if that makes you feel better.

@@MyGadgetsWorld it's rare for electronics to be affected by dust. It does happen but very rare. That is why we never open our pc or Macs to clean dust off, and it works perfectly fine for many years. Your PS5 is a gaming laptop, built from pc components. Should be fine with normal dust build up. Now if the internals get really really dusty, you should clean it.

I have been using WD Black SN850 and had no issues in the past 7 days. I can only recommend which I use amd have experience with. 980 Pro samsung is good one too but I haven't had my hands on that.

There are 2 Venturi nozzles on the side, without the cover they would not work.

Man you are so good. Thanks for noticing that. It is supposed to take the heat to the heatpipes and then out from the back via fins.

@@MyGadgetsWorld That is my guess too. As of how the two nozzles work, one is bigger than the other so I think that after the initial build up of negative pressure in the SSD bay, outward suction on the smaller nozzle breaks down, because of static pressure balance, but suction on the bigger nozzle continues and basically overpowers the possible Venturi effect on the smaller nozzle. After this initial phase the smaller nozzle acts as an intake. But that is all just my theory, after all it has been years since I had this stuff during my bachelors studies.

This is what I tell people, there is a science behind how these products are deisgned, you can't just leave the cover open to cool your SSD, proper heat dissipation and airflow is more important. I watched Sony's tear down video again and it is amazing science how they connect all heat producing component areas with the plate connected to heatpipe for heat transfer and then pushing heat to the back of the PS5 using the pressure build by the dual intake fans. i had a stand off with the god dammed screw for 1 hour...i almost drilled it with a micro drill...then i saw an old sony vaio got the screw from the bottom ...installed the nvme without the spacer!

Yes. Silicone bands don't melt that easy. It has tolerance of over 400°

More the merrier, but these SSDs are more expensive than the PS5 itself. I found a deal for 2TB on newegg and uploaded a video on my channel. It is amazing deal.

@@JohnnyMnemonic. yes it very much is using an older SSD process. The PS5 is a NVME PCIe 4.0 SSD which is the latest standard for SSD’s that must be plugged directly into the mother board to achieve the super fast speeds

Not really. Those fans are for intake so they haven't changed after installing SSD.

Pro tip: don’t use heat sinks with bands. Heat sinks with screws are much better.

To save alot of people from this headache. What all these youtube channels fail to point out to their audience is, in order to install and upgrade a PlayStation 5 m.2 storage you MUST SIGN UP FOR A BETA PROGRAM and be INVITED TO THE PROGRAM BY SONY. Even if you do sign up there is NO guarantee you will be chosen for the Beta program. After that you must download the BETA SOFTWARE UPDATE before you have access to this feature. This feature is not fully supported as of yet and is TBD by Sony. Hurry the F#@k up Sony!
