Mordian Iron Guard have a special place in my heart too. The very first time I walked into a Games Workshop they were facilitating a large battle where about 16 kids were each playing a unit in an imperium vs everyone else battle. The brilliant store manager noticed I was a noob and pulled me over to the table and gave me a single unit which happened to be a stationary heavy weapon on top of a tall building. The atmosphere and fun everyone was having was contagious. I had no idea what was going on but when it was my turn I was directed to shoot a chaos dreadnought on the opposite side of the table. It must've been damaged and I think it was 2nd or 3rd edition (whichever had different profiles for each side of the armour) so the fact it had it's back to me made a difference. The store manager guided me through my turn and my three little human dudes blew up the intimidating dreadnought. Everyone cheered and boom, I was hooked. Your discussion has inspired me to add a little kill team of them to my 2024 to do list.

Lol George nailed it. I also thought I’d just get a few space marines for my shelf and now I’m 2500 points into a blood Angel army with a toolbox full of paint supplies. 😂

I just started out with the hobby and started out with 2 cans of primer (black and white), the 40k paint+tool set, a set of brushes, the model color set from Vallejo, a good desk light and a box of primaris hellblasters. Works great for me, now its just about putting the time in. Loving it so far, thx for the tips and tricks!

Sounds like a solid start. Gotta put the hours in to get the most out of it now for sure!

I definitely think George is onto something with his “fourth pillar of the hobby” being collecting. I’ve never played a game of 40K in my life. I love the lore, but don’t have the time to really deep dive into it and have zero patience for painting but, I want to collect an army. Guess that makes me the perfect potential Siege client. Love the podcast, keep up the good work.

I'm a chocolatier , mainly listen to this as I'm doing production, it's a good way to make a mundane task more fun as well as the banter helps bring a smile on my face while doing something repetitive. It helps me think of ideas for my armies as well. Mainly play seraphon and sylvaneth , and have a stormcast and orc army on the way

Another great show to kick start the year and an absolute trove of tips and advice. I think there's real benefit from people sharing their mistakes and things to avoid rather than just the perfect end product. Maybe a Failbruary? 😅 Intrigued to try varnishes as a medium in my paints to change the properties absolutely great tip.

Tips for mold line removal? It takes me ages and slows me right down, but others are way quicker and get to gluing/painting way quicker. I'm using a hobby knife, running along it; often not in one go so I press slightly but then end up cutting sometimes a mm off or flattening detail on parts like piping
@Gorbachoph
@Gorbachoph 9 месяцев назад
If you are using a knife, you should scrape the blade along the line, never cut

I use surgical scalpels with new blades for every 2-3 sprues. These are very cheap and razor sharp. I use the nr. 7 blade.

I use a very blunt hobby knife. Or the back of the hobby knife. Don’t apply much pressure. I know some people say they use a bit of tamiya thin cement to melt it down.

Joe, would you rather paint a brown base rim on every model James owns, or, paint a warlord titan in sub assemblies? Can't wait to take a crack at beiltanuary! And to answer last years question I listen to this podcast as an industrial plumber in Oslo, Norway; today it was -15°C and I had to drive home through 1/2 meter snowdrifts on a back road due to a traffic accident.

Awesome pod as always! Never stop doing these. I have a question regarding what new model/unit/army do you hope GW drops this year the most? For me i would love updated Grey Knights. They feel so outdated next to the new termies.

After listening to the first point on using primer, I checked the 3 cans of Citadel Colour sprays I have (Chaos Black, White Scar and Retributer Armour) and couldn't find the word "primer" on any of them. Are some/all of these primers? I'm just returning to miniature painting after a few decades, when I would only be applying a primer on an old 80s/90s metal miniature with a brush, so sprays are pretty new to me. I'm hoping retributor armour is a primer as I have a lot of stormcast to paint and obviously it would slow things down a bit if I have to prime with one of the others first before applying the retributor armour, especially with the weather we're having in the UK atm.

Do you guys have a good strategy for long army painting sessions. Me and a friend are going to do a 48 hour painting challenge in a few weeks, attempting to paint as much of an army as we can in that time.

Brush control cant be bought! It only comes with practice, and if you can get a model painted great with a bad brush, upgrading just makes it easier for you, as the skill is already practiced. :) good list guys!

It definitely comes under the tools section I think but Paint is another one that I fell into the trap of wanting a full range of every brand of paint, until I realised I can paint everything perfectly well with Citadel paints and one or two other choice colours. Basically, you don't need every colour that (insert brand here) ever made to be an amazing painter.
@RequiemWraith

Can't help but laugh at the irony of James strongly advocating to use a primer and not just a spray paint, to then name drop Chaos Black, a spray paint 😅
@HappyDuude
@HappyDuude 9 месяцев назад
Isn't chaos black an undercoat? I've certainly used it as one.
@RequiemWraith
@RequiemWraith 9 месяцев назад
@@HappyDuude that is what it gets sold for and wildly used as. But that doesn't change the fact it's an aerosolised paint and not a primer. Take a look at cans from other companies (the ones I know for definite are GSW, Colour Forge and Army Painter) they all state on the cans that they're a Primer. On the Citadel cans, they are only called a Colour Spray, nowhere are they labelled a Primer.
@leejamesburns
@leejamesburns 9 месяцев назад
Yeah, this is something that there just isn't much clarity about. What chemical makes a spray paint a primer? Is it in GW Sprays? Is there a certain amount of it needed to make it effective? Does anything labelled a "primer" have to have that thing in it, or can people just call a paint a primer if they fancy it? This channel has loads of great content, but you guys didn't really clear this up at all.
@SiegeStudios
@SiegeStudios 9 месяцев назад
We will address this on the next episode 👀
@RequiemWraith
@RequiemWraith 9 месяцев назад
@@leejamesburns The formulation for a primer is quite a bit different than that of a paint. The pigments are of a lower quality, lower quantity and also are ground to a lesser standard, since they don't need to be of a 'finishing' quality. Primers then also have various additives to promote high levels of adhesion to a substrate, they are designed to bond much more highly than a paint is able to. This can be done in one of two ways, which then gives rise to different types of primers, you may have seen products from other industries named Etch Primers. These contain additives that cause small scale damage to the substrate to give the primer a better bond. But this type of primer wouldn't be ideal for models as they could damage the intricate details. To be labelled as a primer, a product has to be formulated to be a primer, and likewise if it's not a primer it cannot be labelled as such. Source: I've previously worked for a coatings manufacturer.
