It's unfortunate to see that some Samoans still take advantage of overseas folks. As a Samoan, I'm not immune to the scams either. I visited Matareva beach once and was ripped off at nearly every turn and I've vowed never to return. I'm happy to support my people and gladly will part with my money to pump it back into the local economy but I'm also not made of money. It's ridiculous that Samoans assume we're all rich just because we're from overseas. I hope the negative experiences don't taint your overall picture and experience of Samoa. There are plenty of good honest people who genuinely are trying to make a decent living. Hope you'll enjoy the rest of your time in Samoa.

No we totally understand what you are saying. Overall Samoa 🇼🇸 is a beautiful Island and we are hoping to get to Savaii one day. I knew for a fact as I been to matareva beach before that they were over pricing me. I payed $20 tala and that’s all it was for the day. We did here from a local that Matareva had been having issues with the chief and that they weren’t seeing eye to eye on a some things. So I guess this why when I asked the man why do I have to pay more he said we are the matareva family and the chief is outside of here so I was like ok sure I have no problem paying you extra we weren’t going to stay for long there was no shops or any thing to make us stay longer but the man insisted we rent a hut 🛖. Thankyou for your comment.

@@DiIslandFamily Everything gets lost and twisted in translation I feel. The people you paid money to at the front should tell people where to park and swim as part of Entry, as it is a big beach. The spot where you all were at probably the family that run the business try to up sale now when people want to swim there because it's a nice spot. I don't think he was trying to scam and the kids selling were trying to sell you a bunch for 20 not just the one lol. Get yourselves a local to take you around if you can and they can save you some hassle, or like you said that a lot of these places are not publicly owned and remembering that it's just the villages way of trying to get some money. I know if it was a white man owning that that it would just cost $10 plus $20 AUD. Everyone in the world tries to upsell you, upgrade you, charge you for this and that, and I just feel some of these places in Samoa and any of the Islands would cost you way more if you were to try and access them anywhere else, and those plates of food for $15AUD is just so cheap. Just saying. Hope you all enjoy the rest of your time there. Bless Up.

there was no taking "advantage of" in this video. The beach fee is set by the village / family that owns that beach. Most lands in Samoa is private, family-owned, not public. The other case in the avocado stand is a communication issue because they don't speak Samoan and the Samoan kid doesn't speak good English. She called him "meauli" as if it was an insult but the husband, being Jamaican, is meauli. Nah, Samoans are not meauli. Original Samoans are not black. Why meauli people think everyone is them?

You have to understand something. This is not America. There is no privilege or nothing when you are out of the country. This is not a scam, the village owns the beach. This is why you have to pay. If you don’t like it go home. 🤷🏻‍♂️. Goto Florida

Another scam we had (partner and I) was in a shop. I was busy shopping and looking at gift items and I heard my partner speaking to someone. I went over and I assumed they knew each other by the way they were speaking ( in Samoan) After the man spoke in English giving us a story of him being a "priest" and he needed to catch a boat to Savaii. Apparently he had no money ( I guess the parishioners hadn't donated that week!! Lol) He was waiting for his daughter to send money through, but it hadnt arrived. The whole story wasn't adding up. My partner ended up giving a small amount of money. After we got out of the shop, I asked my partner if he knew him, and my partner said NO!! I was baffled as I thought they knew each other. If I realised this guy wasn't known to my partner I would have encouraged my partner to leave and not pay a cent. I asked my partner they way you both spoke a lot what were you talking about? Apparently this "priest" was just acting like he knew my partner from somewhere and making up some story that they had met before. This may have been possible in certain circumstances... but in this case he doesnt live in Samoa!! 😂😂😂😂 Lmao.

I love your videos. I wanted to comment about your car rental experience. I cannot believe that those car rental places don't even clean to the best of their ability to get the smell out or even put that out of service until the smell is gone and give you another rental. OMG. And then I can't believe that everywhere you have gone to buy produce on the side of the road that no one knows how to speak english or even understand what you are trying to say. Wow! I am from American Samoa and speak samoan very fluently. I just always thought that samoa would have a lot of people that spoke english well. But anyway, i love Samoa and hope to visit there again soon. Thanks for sharing your journey with us. Stay safe.

This is click bait!!! This is normal in Samoa nowadays. Don’t like it don’t go there. STOP giving Samoa a bad name by titles of this vlog. So what if it’s $60 tala it’s like $30 dollars Australian for a swim on a beautiful beach. The kid you were trying to buy fruit off clearly says he doesn’t know. You’re assuming cause he’s there he knows. It’s not his stall.

Best to ring the Samoan High Commission office depending on where you are and report this so they can advise the government about these issues as the government are not aware of this. As far as I'm concerned there should be a uniform charge to any beach no matter where it is. No one should privately own a beach, people own lands, not the beach or the ocean. The fee should be for using private lands to get to the beach, not for using the beach. At least that's my own personal opinion as a Samoan. Come to think of it though a lot of these land owners have built beach fales, showers and changing facilities by the beaches hence they charge these fees.
@BennyChainz
@BennyChainz 2 месяца назад
Unfortunately the beaches are not looked after by the government. They are looked after by the village. $20 Australian is not much considering the village maintains the beach and pays the water thats pumped in for showers and toilets all year round. You pay more in taxes a week in Australia 😅

Waiting to see what scam you experienced. I will tell you about our second "scammer" ,after I have watched the vlog. I'm glad you (Maria) touched on the paying system, although it may not be quite so clear without showing transaction itself? I was just about to mention the paying system when visiting places, something tourists need to know. It's so awkward when you don't know if the man asking for the money is genuine or not? Seems strange that you need to pay twice, and 40 tala..uhmm ??? We went to a beach and the guy wanted to charge me double = "white/foreigner tax. It didn't quite like it, but I would have paid it that time for the experience. Ended up we didn't pay and just left.

@@chiefrocker19 in Samoa, if someone has a chief title, they would be using that as their name. There's no "your name and your chief title" they are one and the same. Whatever you think you understand about Samoa is shallow. Just go, experience, and don't come thinking you know everything.

Advise to who is watching this vlog, when you go to the island of Samoa, stick with town activities and get your self a translator.. Things are different when you go to America Samoa it's a territory of the USA.. They speak Fluent English. I apologize for my people 😢.
