Great place to live in or just take it easy in for lunch time

I went to middle and high school in A/P. I live in Lakeland now and have been planning on returning to A/P. I rode through last month and was saddened by the ran down look of the town.

And get back to the way it used to be when on Friday nights and Saturday nights where we used to ride up and down Main Street and hang out with friends all up and down the town mile long mall

My heart smiles listening to people excited about bringing positive change to Main Street. Tho we moved after high school, my heart has forever stayed in AP. If you look at Avon Park’s history… it was always a destination. People from England, other parts of the US, Capone, all the snowbirds! Somewhere in the 90s the thread unraveled and the town became somewhat desolate. It’s had its growth but downtown always seemed to b left out. I’ve always thought it could be such a vibrant downtown. Nothing wrong with keeping the small town charm. It’s what makes Avon Park… well, Avon Park. I disagree with going down to 1 lane (p/ direction) however, I see the argument with regards to safety. Is there a way for semis to bypass on an alternate route to hit 27? Back in the day it was a dream of mine to be mayor of Avon Park lol! Perhaps silly but it was but it seems like the guy currently in position has the energy, the drive and vision for what the town needs! I hope the changes occur and the town continues to improve and b all it can b.

The mall has been the same for 40 plus years! The big truck traffic is supposed to be using the Truck Route enforce the ordinance. The sign clearly says no thru trucks! Parking can be designated in lots behind each main st businesses and the current parking lanes can be used as a bike lanes. Downtown has enough parking to facilitate this. The idea that people will return to shopping downtown will only happen if there is a long term concerted effort to encourage folks to spend the time money and effort to do so! Money alone solves nothing!

You'd better work on some of the roads youced traffic onto during the recent Spring event first. The roadway in front of the old Police Department is horrendous and it will receive much more pressure on a daily basis if you do this.

I call bs! Change the posted speed limit to 35. Hound the Sheriff’s Office to do speed patrols which they get paid for and restrict big trucks to thru traffic! make 64 the truck route for thru traffic. AND BRING BACK AVON PARK POLICE OFFICERS AND PILICE DEPARTMENT TO EMGORCE LAWS, and SPEEDING!!

Then why is it rated one of the worst towns in Florida with a very high crime rate?

Your are supposed to advance infrastructure, not teleport back in time to the 20s. Who wants to drive bumper to bumper like the rest of highlands county.
