I had no idea why I wore two novelty St. Patrick's Day accessories when I sung a short cover of "Love Sux". It might be because I was feeling festive and singing a fast-paced, rage-filled song that launched Avril Lavigne back to stardom was oddly suitable for that holiday. The chorus is catchy and it places emphasis on the melancholic theme throughout the song that screams, "That's it! I'm done with this person!" Avril's choice to compare playing tic-tac-toe to her love life fascinates me. She was married twice before and was engaged to one of her producers at the time they worked on the album. Having experienced heartbreak and in relationships where one partner was exploited repeatedly is awful so the anger expressed in not just in "Love Sux" but the album as a whole is completely relatable. On the bright side, that kind of heartbreak can teach us to be more alert to red flags next time around and that a doomed relationship is practice for the next.
I didn't get to the bridge because I was short on time the day I recorded this take, but if Avril Lavigne sings the titular song of her seventh album during the Hartford, CT leg of her Greatest Hits tour, I'll try to test my ability to keep up with her and on another day, record a second and hopefully, longer attempt.
