As per the vedic traditional Namkaran is a sanskrit word ('nam' = name; 'karan' = create) is the religious tradition of naming a baby with chanting of vedic mantras. The priest would perform puja and consult patri to suggest a letter which is good for baby using traditional methods and astrological rules of naming. The puja is the first ceremony of a new born and is typically performed on 12th day after the birth of a child. This is generally a happy ritual - with the tensions of childbirth now over, the family comes together to celebrate the birth of the child with this ceremony.
