Cats has nothing to do with Cthulhu. I'm still trying to figure out if it was created by Nyarlatothep, Yogsototh or Azatoth ie if at origin it's evil, forbidden knowledge or just the unfeeling void. My guess would be all 3 combined.

I think trying to figure out exactly where Lucifer would fit on the hierarchy, if he were to exist within the Cthulhu Mythos, can be quite difficult for a number of reasons, depending on how obsessively one analyzes Lovecraftian stories and Christian theology. But to cut to the chase, and based on the little bit I have looked up, I’d say that Lucifer is probably on a higher level of existence than the great old ones (like Cthulhu and Dagon), less than or equal to the outer gods (like Nyarlathotep, Shub-Niggurath, or Yog-Sothoth), but pretty much nothing compared to Azathoth (who is the Cthulhu Mythos’ closest equivalent to the One God of Abrahamic religions and could just blink the devil out if existence with a waking thought, if he ever desired to).

Lucifer is one of the Nyarlopletep names.

@Kathy Kat It seems that the only major difference between Lucifer/Satan and Nyarlathotep is their contrasting motivations and the implications that said motivations might present for humanity (if one wants to read on)... With Satan, he mainly tries to afflict mankind out of genuine malevolence and hatred. As one of the most powerful, intelligent, and radiant angels to exist, Lucifer was full of pride. He loathed being commanded to bow down and serve the lowly humans, wanting instead to be served as the highest of all created beings, if not worshipped like God himself. I think specifically in Catholicism, the traditional theology even suggests that the Virgin Mary is to be the most exalted of all God's servants, as the queen of Heaven, further adding to Satan's jealousy and malice towards humanity. With all this unfolding, he tries to rebel against heaven, embraces his own damnation, still seeks to be worshipped whenever possible, and tries to indirectly channel his contempt towards God by targeting humanity, either to corrupt them into becoming just as evil/rebellious as he is or gladly make suffer those who remain holy. In Nyarlathotep's case, he has nothing to envy humans for and is not afflicting mankind out of any personal vendetta or specific cause to fight for. Instead, he pretty seems to be what you would get, if you took the Joker and turned him into a cosmic-level demon. Nyarlathotep menaces humanity in many of the same ways as the devil archetype in pop-culture. He tempts people towards their own madness/demise, appears among witchcraft cults, occasionally gathers worshippers of his own, instigates death and chaos, inspires false religions, haunts various locales, and is sometimes portrayed shapeshifting into gigantic forms of hellish abominations. From what I looked up, however, he only does so because he views humanity as his toys and actors to play around with, and he loves to savor the unfolding spectacle, like a kid having "fun" with insects in the backyard. Sometimes as a result, it is implied that he might even intervene to help and prolong humanity's existence at times, so that we can live on to entertain him more in the future. Overall, it would appear to be a case of "pick your poison" depending on one's preferences. With Lucifer/Satan, you know that this eldritch entity will put every last ounce of passion and effort into corrupting humanity to its core and bringing about great trials and tribulations. Even though his motivations imply that there really is a struggle for good to be waged, it would confirm that genuine evil also exists and it is out to consume us. However, it could also be comforting and ascribe a great inherent dignity/purpose to human life, knowing that the state of our very existence could wound the pride of such an otherworldly entity. Meanwhile, Nyarlathotep is more "amoral" rather than "malevolent". He is probably not trying his hardest to make humanity suffer and, again, might even protect us at times (I imagine that if Satan and Nyarlathotep both existed in the same mythos, they would probably butt heads occasionally as a result). However, there is no such silver lining, when one realizes that we are so insignificant in Nyaralothotep's eyes that he does not even consider us worth hating, for we are just random fleeting projections of Azathoth's dreaming mind, devoid of any purpose or cause to fight for.
