Awakening - Sunrise over the Ocean painting by Eva Volf

Extra large commissioned seascape painting by Eva Volf, oil on canvas 60x48" inches.
I did a lot of color mixing for this painting: used ultramarine+veridian for water, mauve+ultramarine+sienna for the clouds, foam and reflections of the sky; umber, ocher and burnt sienna for the sand, white and cadmium yellow for the sunlight

That’s the toughest question ever. I just step back and if this scene evokes the serene feeling I experienced on the coast when I got my inspiration than it’s done! It’s more about the overall feeling in my art not the amount of details

Bonjour Eva. Merci 🙏

Hi Chantal, just use a dry clean brush to blend a rather thick paint. And yes, here I blended warm blue of the sky and purple of the clouds so there wasn’t any green when I blended the colors

Very nice work. Are you using Liquin as a medium or a fast drying oil? Doesn't appear to be wet on wet. Doing all that in one session is impressive. And....mauve? What brand paint are you using...lol
@EvaVolf
@EvaVolf 4 года назад
don seib yes, I used Liquin. This piece was painted in several sessions. Yes, you can easily use or mix any purple instead. I think mauve was from Georgian or smth, I ran out of it a year ago and didn’t reorder since, just mix my own purples now.

Eva, thank you for sharing your techniques and great talent with all of us. I watched you paint this 6 months ago for the first time and left you a nice comment. Now it comes up again at the time when I'm having some issues and not sure what I should do so, I figured I'd ask your advice being you paint large paintings. Do you find it much better / easier to paint on larger canvases?? I've been using the standard 18x24 and it has me pulling my hair out because I cant seem to be able to get the fine details in my paintings like I want them. I've tried buying small detail brushes but that's not working. I can't get the effects with small brushes like I can with larger ones. I watch others do it on even smaller canvases but I cant get the hang of it. Doesn't work for me. Are there other artists that have this same problem that you know of?? I thought if I go to a bigger canvas then I can fit all my subjects in the painting on a larger scale that will allow me to get the detail im looking for.. I've heard that some artists can only paint on larger canvases and never thought about why that was. So I figured I'd ask you how you do with smaller canvases ? And if you like the larger surfaces better?? Thanks for any help and input ✌😎🌻
@EvaVolf
@EvaVolf 4 года назад
Tom Stclair Hi Tom, I started painting on larger canvases primarily when we moved to our new house a year ago: I need large paintings to fill the empty walls. But yes, definitely painting on larger canvases gives more space for details. You can see my smaller paintings on my website evavolf.com, I painted quite a lot of them, too. And prefer smaller sizes for plein air. Having smaller detail brushes helps, too, but what you need most is patience and time. My recent paintings are not as detailed as they used to be, but they’re more atmospheric and I focus on getting the values and edges right. Check out my Instagram Eva.volf
@EvaVolf
@EvaVolf 4 года назад
Tom Stclair In short, do whatever feels right for you. I personally just don’t have the patience for hyper realism. But finding your own style and technique pays off much better than simply copying the subject. If you prefer painting with larger brushes on larger canvases, that’s totally what you should do! Good luck and all the best, Tom! Hugs
