As a first approximation we can say the mind is the contents of consciousness. That is to say what we are calling the mind are these contents that we know as thoughts, emotions (motivators). A particular sensation that corresponds to a particular thought that gives it a corresponding emotional flavor. Without the thought-form it is actually just energy that can be good food for our presence. The original knowing energy has two main characteristics, it can know and it can identify. At first it knows separation and identifies with separation however it has the possibility of knowing the Oneness or Unity of the whole without any separation at all. It is only relative vision that makes the appearance of this separate from that. This is necessary yet we also wish to see through this limited way of seeing and know we are are not separate from the One Unity. For now consider what is there besides these contents of the 'mind'? We could say it is the simple presence that we can sense that is associated with whole body awareness and yet it is not necessarily limited to the lower vibration and shape or form of that which we call the physical body. As you know we need to learn to acknowledge all contents that arise in our experience. It doesn't do any good to just deny them. We allow intimate contact with them yet we don't necessarily assent to them. In their essence all these contents are just energy patterned by thought or clusters of thought. None of us remember that originally we are the energy of awareness that has its own intelligence, love, compassion and courage while knowing it is not anything nor is it separate from anything. This "knowing energy" which is not separate from anything doesn't at first know what it is; it doesn't at first even know it has arms and legs and a mouth. How does it come to think of itself and identify itself as this body? From birth to the age of about two through the interactions with mother and the environment, we implicitly learn we have a separate body and it is as if we implicitly learn "I am 'in here' in this separate body and mother is "out there' in that separate body". And everything else is 'out there' because I don't find anyone in here with me. Through identifying with being 'in here' is this separate body then everything else is separate from me and 'out there'. However this limited view is only due a template of impressions taken in from the outer senses that gives us subject-object knowing. I am in here (subject) and everything else is 'out there' as objects or other bodies. Originally what we are is not separate. However separation is not a mistake because without it we could not know the Unity of all and everything which is sometimes said to be the reality of love. Love is as it were full of hidden treasures that it wishes to manifest on the stage of time and space. Both time and space are consciousness limiting its vision of itself for the purpose of manifesting in what appears as separation aka time and space. Mainly unknown to us we have an inner aspect that as it were encompasses all of space and time. Wonderous.
