This recreation of awalim dance (professional urban dance in Egypt) from the turn of the 20th century is informed by early film footage, written descriptions of dance along with comparisons to modern traditional entertainers in Egypt and is intended as a creative speculation of what performances may have looked like at this time period. The style of dance is improvisational by nature and often includes acrobatic elements such as splits or balancing various objects such as jars, bottles, candelabras on the head or chairs or tables in the mouth.
Unfortunately we were having some technical issues with the sound in the stage monitors which made it almost impossible to hear the music over my sagat, but such is the life of a modern performer!
