SYNOPSIS
Through the eyes of a young girl suffering from mental illness, CALDERA glimpses into a world of psychosis and explores a world of ambiguous reality and the nature of life and death.
DIRECTOR"S STATEMENT
CALDERA is inspired by my father"s struggle with schizoaffective disorder. In states of delusion, my father has danced on the rings of Saturn, spoken with angels, and fled from his demons. He has lived both a fantastical and haunting life, but one that"s invisible to the most of us. In our differing understanding of reality, we blindly mandate his medication, assimilate him to our marginalizing culture, and entirely misinterpret him for all he is worth. CALDERA aims to not only venerate my father, but all brilliant minds forged in the haunted depths of psychosis.

I have battled with severe depression, anxiety, and mild PTSD for years. My dreams often were chaotic nightmares, and the "good" dreams were ones where I drowned by jumping into the ocean and swam in the depths. The imagery in my dreams was like this (my favorite animals also happen to be turtles)... so even if it was originally meant to illustrate schizophrenia, the video resonates with me.

This short speaks (whispers really) to anyone who has ever felt apart, alienated from the world as it has become. If you are such a person, do not despair. Listen: There is a great, untapped well of power within you. Make it your mission to find it.

message studio Step #1 Stand up. That's all, just stand up. Step #2 Help someone without expecting anything in return. Make them smile. Step #3 Repeat steps #1 & #2 every day for just 1 week without sitting at that screen for any more than 1 hour each day. Set an alarm to make you keep your promise to yourself. Don't make excuses. Don't put it off. Think about it. What have you got to lose? Going further in is not going to get you out. Know this: The further away you get from the person you think you are, the more you will be the person you know you are. Pretty strange right? Repeat that to yourself until it makes sense. There are no chains on you except the ones you've put there yourself.

+SimplyDeluxeSticks I think I know EXACTLY what you mean. Just had a bout with that myself: only just barely managing enough energy to distract myself knowing full well it doesn't help the situation. It's a behavior that often accompanies the downward spirals. Sloth is a child of despair. Depression is a particularly forceful problem because it robs you of the very tools to overcome it. I hope you're doing better now...

Perfect representation of mental illness. My mom struggled with it and she felt like she wasn't herself on medication, she felt trapped and it was like the sane world was unbearable because the insane world felt more real to her, she had schizoaffective disorder but she was the one person in my life I'd give my life to take care of her and not think twice, she died this march. Why is it that I'm only 26yrs old and has lost so many of my loved ones, I only have two family members I care about left and one is dying slowly pretty much right in front of my eyes.

My dad showed this to me when it came out, I was nine, that was the year I started therapy. I’m 16 now and I know why he thought it was important. He knew. Edit: I wrote this while in a very sad state of mind so sorry for the dramatic formation of my sentences - though I want to say my heart goes out to those of you who understand, and those of you who don’t but still have your own struggles - you’ll be okay 💚

Having clinical depression, this is how I interpret the piece. The girl is extremely unhappy/disconnected with her life. She has to take medication for it, but it doesn't really help. She wants to escape and completely abandon her current life. But, realistically, she cannot. Too many ties and obligations keep her stuck where she is. So she found a permanent out. Maybe I interpreted it incorrectly, but that is how I connect with it and I enjoyed watching it a lot.

d3tach3d No. You can't blame the movie production companies for doing what makes them money. Companies all exist for the sole purpose of making money. If most people wanted to see a movie like this, they would be made. However, most people just want action, explosions and violence. After that it becomes a dissertation on human nature, which I do not feel compelled to do. Especially for a youtube comment.

Jesse Foust - for the most part, I agree with you. Sometimes something like "blade runner" comes and fails at the box office, but gets recognized later. Or sometimes something like "the matrix" gets made and changes all the rules of the game.

The trash in theaters? It comes down to what people want to see with whatever mood they're in. What a lot of people want are action, even horror/thriller movies. I have no problem with watching short/indie movies set in this tone and have beautiful meaning, I quite like them. Then again, I also like the majority of comic book hero movies, giant monster/robot fighting, decent comedies and other bigger names that come out. I agree on the quality, that this is one of the best short films I've seen and I WISH more people would see things of this nature though. :)

EXPLANATION: Yes, that was suicide at the end, but in her mind she finally understood where she belonged. You see her finally let go, as she started doing when she dropped the pills. To the world it's just another case of a schizo who stopped taking her medication and committed suicide, but this film gave us her perspective, so if you could ask the girl we might understand she'll tell us she went home, the place she always saw, where she was always happiest, not death at all (it was no suicide for her just as probably as it isn't for many schizos that we see "take" their life) you saw it was her reality just as valid as yours or mine. This could help people understand better the people that get labeled "crazy" or "schizos". The world deems you mentally ill, where would you rather live the rest of your life? In a world where you're labeled as a mentally ill person and given pills that suppress the "crazy thoughts" and depress you, or give in to the beauty that no one sees but you where you're actually happy in a life that you see meaning in, not living as an 'outcast patient of something'? It isn't just the people we label "schizos" it's all of us. What I find interesting is the mere fact that we all imagine a more preternatural space in our minds to which we recluse to. This alone tells us the world we live in is in critical lack of exuberance.

+willwork4superpowazz I get how she saw good things.. But many of them get paranoid and even attack their families. My uncle was schizoid.. and do you know what he liked doing? Inflicting pain on others (He had a lot of sadistic traits) and stuffing his house with garbage. He thought everyone was against him. I can understand how she can represent the daydreamer crazy person.. But there should be a limit. All I see in this video (with the exception of the amazing art and the nice premise) is a lonely person that gives up on life.

No wonder this won an award. The visuals were stunning, the animation was flawless, and the music was gorgeous. What I saw made me feel this feeling of "oh my god, I don't know what this is, but it's amazing". There were so many things that could be the truth. It could be some sort of mythical apocalypse. She could have a mental illness. It could simply be magic. No matter the plot or meaning, this film is a work of art.

My life is like the color black. It is dark, and cold. But I can see the light in the darkness shining through, the warmth seeping through the cracks, the colors creating a beautiful presence in the dark. Even if there is just one light, that's one more shred of hope to cling to. But the pills turn everything gray, and muddy, and the colors and the light blend together to the point where I can't see them any more, and the warmth is sucked out by the lukewarm nothingness. I'd rather live in a dark place with hope than a gray place with no life. I'd rather exist in a reality where I have something to pull me out of the dark pit and into the light, than lighting up the pit just enough for me to eek out an existence. I'd rather live with depression and have that one little light, than take pills and have nothing at all.

This speaks to my soul on a level no other visual video has. I am that girl. I hate this life...the city....how detached and cold people have become, the depression, the alienation...its all so dead and detached to me....and cold and hard. I survive but not really living. Every day is.....the same. Im in prison. I have a connection with the spirit. So few understand my being.....I have never felt I belongd in this world.....ever. Its not my home. I am just passing through. Trust with most ends up in betrayal........I long to be free.....to end this life and suffering I have known for so long. .....to be reunited with God. For my spirit to be released from the shackles of my body wrecked by pain and agony. I have faught afallen demon...just as she sees the demon in the distance. A breath....one last time...my spirit exploding from its prison of suffering, in ribbons of blue light ....into the hands of God.

I saw this as a life of suffering severe depression, then she finds her happy place. Although strong suicidal thoughts and urges try to chase her, (the city falling apart) all she wants is to be happy or at the very least content with her life. At the end she grabs ahold of her happiness (the turtle) while she still can and ends her life on a good note. Since she believed suicide was inevitable, At least this way she left the world because she was happy enough and not because she couldn't take it anymore.

Watched before reading the meaning behind the video and my first interpretation is the girl is handling depression. With the way the normal world looks, no color, everyone is a robot or slave to something, her world is depressing as can be. But she decides to forgo the drugs and leave her "world" that they created for her. When looking back at the city, it seems bright and ideal, but she decides to continue on without it. The pond and light is her happiness/whatever that helps stops the depression or allows her to at least deal with it. She feels like she can be herself here. But when crazy floating geometry man comes for her, trying to force her world back into these predefined shapes, she leaves that to. It's still on the shore however, still reminding her thats where she can come back to and is never truly away for good. Then being stuck in the ocean is like being overwhelmed with everything to the point your drowning. After that I got nothing. But then read the description and very much liked your reasons for creating it. Just wanted to say my first non-biased interpenetration of it. Wonderful film with beautiful quality and scenes! Absolutely gorgeous and awe inspiring at many parts.

Since most people don't look at the description this is what film is trying show. Through the eyes of a young girl suffering from mental illness, CALDERA glimpses into a world of psychosis and explores a world of ambiguous reality and the nature of life and death. DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT CALDERA is inspired by my father's struggle with schizoaffective disorder. In states of delusion, my father has danced on the rings of Saturn, spoken with angels, and fled from his demons. He has lived both a fantastical and haunting life, but one that's invisible to the most of us. In our differing understanding of reality, we blindly mandate his medication, assimilate him to our marginalizing culture, and entirely misinterpret him for all he is worth. CALDERA aims to not only venerate my father, but all brilliant minds forged in the haunted depths of psychosis.

given the director's backstory of his dad, i'm thinking he created this animation to show that harmless crazies should be left alone; their whimsical concocted world is a serene salvation compared to our drab reality. how heartless are we to take away their inner peace and force them to conform to mundane life and pains; their minds make them happy and here we are, making excuses to fix them and being killjoys i love the flowy atmosphere when her clothes n hair are swayed by the water current, and the haziness and dullness of when she got in touch with reality, shows how displeasurable the real world is

I often come back to this video (first seen 2013/14 maybe) once a year or so to ponder and put things into perspective. I don’t know why but it never fails to move me. Sometimes I lake swim in England and will go sub aqua briefly, hold my breath and stare downwards into the abyss. Except it has the opposite effect on me - I realise how much there is to live for. Please don’t ever remove this

The whole time I watched this I thought "man I want there to be more films about the realities of how people with mental health issues experience the world, because the general populace just doesn't know. They think it's a comedic mechanism like in Monk, or that social disorders are just ppl being weird, and why can't depressed people just realize they can be happy.

Speaking of which, I met the guy who created www.kickstarter.com/projects/infinitap/neverending-nightmares I stopped and spoke with him when I saw the video of the demo and realized "oh man this is my OCD realized in video and it's horrifying". And of course, he based the game on his OCD obsessive imaging. See the video and see why a lot of us would take any kind of medication that allowed us to experience the world like most people.

I have Schizoaffective Disorder, but mine is linked with Bipolar 2, Rapid Cycling. It is absolutely hell to live with. Sure, the fantasy seems nice for a while, but when that's all it is, you start to change, and soon, the fantasy is all that dominates. It takes some very severe, very serious intervention for reality to come through again. This video did an excellent job of portraying what it's like.

@kittyMKZ
@kittyMKZ 10 лет назад
Ahh, I see! :) I personally would have interpreted it completely different if it wasn't for the small explanation. I suppose even with the explanation we're all prone for that to happen, however. After all, we both see the same things but hold a different perception.
@kittyMKZ
@kittyMKZ 10 лет назад
I believe so too, I've never thought for actual art to be self explanatory! I find what you just said quite interesting, too. I have one dear friend who also has schizophrenia but his behaviour proved his world to be far different and much more sinister than what the film demonstrates. Schizophrenia itself is a very interesting topic in my opinion, I've always wondered if it really is a "disease" as many doctors put it.
@kittyMKZ
@kittyMKZ 10 лет назад
I've wondered quite the same. It is quite rare to find a diseased person of that kind, just as it is rare to find an actual dumb person. There may be lazy people but real dumb people is actually hard to come by, I think. I've always wondered how one sees something that "is not there". Your professor sounds like he would've given an interesting class!

Being a caregiver to a mentally afflicted woman my age for 3 years till she passed away I have often wondered the same thing: who was the saner of the two of us? Yes she had her moments but I miss the simple way she looked at our strange society, our weird habits that often don't make sense even to us and the way she had to see things according to her own perceptions that so often hit it right on the nail. I miss her total honesty about herself, how she saw herself and her big loving heart she kept despite her difficulties. She made more sense than I do in this crazy world, in fact I always enjoyed time with her as we were plunged in a very simple reality where things made sense in her world. If we are able to survive this world surely that would indicate a degree of mental 'trouble'?
@kittyMKZ
@kittyMKZ 10 лет назад
Myriam Haar Very interesting concept! "If we are able to survive this world, surely that would indicate a degree of mental 'trouble'." Brilliant! :D I suppose we're all a little insane, some use it towards a benefit while others might as well back society up a few steps. I too, have been noticing that those well aware of what surrounds us and the society we live in are melancholic. It appears that once you understand the way we live as a human race, well it's rather depressing. After all it is well known that no great mind is free of sorrow, so maybe we're not as insane as to accept the lifestyle we carry. In the end, I will always believe that without the strange, odd or anything "labeled as something wrong", there'll be no real great aptitude.

I saw it completely differently, but it's open to interpretation. My interpretation; I saw that she was taking medication so the dark city which stands for depression or another mental health problem would be numbed away. When she stopped taking them, the darkness came back. There was light in the dark, in the ocean, she dove in, I think she met her wisdom and resilience when she met the turtle. There was an explosion of the darkness, it started disintegrating, because she was in the light, and when she really let go, the light filled her up and she was healing.

"In states of delusion, my father has danced on the rings of Saturn, spoken with angels, and fled from his demons. He has lived both a fantastical and haunting life, but one that's invisible to the most of us." that's an issue, to assume his experience was delusion. Who's to say what's true? today we have physicist playing and experimenting with other dimensions, other so called "realities" we understand we are just a frequency in a radio, a humongous radio we can't even beginning to understand. Tom Campbell for example, is a great physicist who has been in other dimensions through OBE's (out of body experiences) and he says there are unnumbered dimensions, beings and things we could never understand from this tiny little perspective... I just wish Evan could get this info, could research scientist like Tom Campbell (he's everywhere here on youtube) to see that maybe his father wasn't delusional after all... but of course, I'm sure most of his suffering was because he was unable to control what he could see and therefore unable to tune it out, and well, because society thinks people like him are crazy and so he wasn't even able to share his experience with others... so little we know, about reality.

+Dulgrut but isn't that sweet? we sooo much believe we are just this mere "accident" here out of nothing, and yet we call it reality... implying your belief that meat and random perfect life (oxymoron there) is "reality"... still, that's a belief. the airplane, wifi, Tesla, all of those were mocked and thought to be impossible, that in "reality" could never exist. And now is so normal we don't even think about it. The best way to know if a belief is true is to test it. Anyone that really wants to know what comes next, should try OBE (out of body experiences) I recommend Tom Campbell experiments...he saw weirder things that this guy's dad... is all made by the computer's imagination anyway, only man is used to only believe what he can understand...
@Targatay

Andromeda I tried OBE but after many attempts it went ... very... unpleasantly for me so i kind of gave up and never tried again. But yes.. i understand what you think.. (But if it was "real" dont you think that there would be more "open-minded" persons....? ) After all mind can create many things that looks real but they arent... And excuse my bad english. I just glued this word nonsense after hard day...
@petersvancarek
@petersvancarek 6 лет назад
I don't think the OBE phenomena is mental madness. I do it for more than 30 years and I still haven't found anything real in it. I may never find any connection. But that is OK. I didn't fall into thinking of it as real only because it feels so real. I'm firmly anchored into reality and I observe, experiment and relax out of body.

Sometimes I have dreams. Once, I was talking with a God. Zeus. He led me to a large pool, and I jumped in. I dove to the bottom and looked up. He was gone. The surface was full of spines creatures, things that would kill me if I touched them. I started drowning. A brown bear appeared next to me and brought me back to the surface. There were no creatures around me, and there was a path clear of them leading to now the edge of a beach, land. But I turned and saw my friend opposite the path, in a pile of the creatures. I looked at the path and shook my head. I started to swim through the layer of creatures, pain as I did so. I touched my friend and she stopped drowning, she appeared on the beach. But the creatures were killing me, so I drowned saving her. (I'm not quite sure why I had this dream, but most of my dreams are about drowning an water in some sort of way. But I have always considered my favorite sport to be swimming. I'm not sure why these dreams are happening)

The cinematography and the celestial blue effects are gorgeously haunting. The camera breaks the "always have chin in a close-up" rule and the ""edge proximity rule" (what I call it when an object on the middle right remains on the middle right, and not the far right or switched left. Maybe it's part of the 180-degree rule.) The angles always look for a strikingly unusual composition (even going upside-down near the ending). The out-of-focus in the real world is a great touch. Though at times the human's face looks uncanny, the notions implied with it seem to work for it.

You know... in some ways i do not understand what this is about... but at the same time i do. I read the description... huh so it´s about the point of view of a girl with a mental illnes... maybe that´s why i feel like i relate to this so much. I´ve seen what this girl sees through her eyes, i know what it feels like to have medication as a friend but also an enemy, to feel different, alone, that nobody understands you, to have a point of view that seems nobody else has... maybe you can tell, but i had and always will have a mental illness. But not only one... i had three. So i really feel connected through this even though it seems confusing and random... It´s different. And i understand more than anybody what that feels like. Different is not worse. It´s unique and special, and maybe not always understandable, but it doesn´t have to be... "All you need is love". Seems like the perfect thing to put here cause it´s true... that´s all we need, attention and care, someone who makes you feel normal, like you matter, that they make you feel they really care... i feel like i said something stupid but oh well...That´s all i can say about this really. I enjoyed every second of this, thank you and keep up the good work! :)

I don't think it's about mental illness, I think it's about the world illness. However, if we destroy industry, which destroys the life of our planet, we will destroy ourselves as we are on the border of these two opposites. We are nature but we also depend on industry. This girl symbolizes the sacrifice humanity has to make to save the planet.
