The dragon gave him what he needs, not what he asked for. She gave him Wisdom.
@attyjade

He had wisdom before (feeding the lizard/dragon, recognizing the dragon was the lizard, keeping it safe, knowing what he wanted was different from his father's wish). His wish was for his father's acceptance as is. His father's demeanor changed when he said he will be alright.

@@attyjade I can see that now. Thank you. At least that unnamed wish granting Dragoness to an extent (Though not completely unreasonable, nor completely heartlesss) was kind and merciful enough to let the Boy and his Father leave her forest peacefully without having to kill them, because the Boy was kind enough to share his food with her. Wise decision. Let's hope the next Dragon they meet is much nicer, friendlier, and less willing to harm people?

At 8:28 minutes, the boy says, " I didn't need the magic". He even marks it with a stutter. This means that he didn't make a wish. He is not 'bothered' by what his father saw as a handicap and he doesn't want any magic to fix anything in his personality. He accepts all the positives and negatives in himself. That's why he is wise and that's why he is going to be "alright"(on 8:40 minutes).
@jamescunningham2035
@jamescunningham2035 4 года назад
Yes this is a story about the father learning he has to accept his son how he is. That is what we were trying for. It is a bit too ambiguous for many and the boy's stutter is not that clear. But I'm glad it clicked for you.

@YouTubeallowedmynametobestolen 3 года назад
@@jamescunningham2035 Yeah, I kept wondering, "What problem with his voice?" Glad to have it cleared up. I'll give it another listen. Great job in any case! I really like the overall tone. I think maybe my favorite moment is when the father goes one way, and the boy goes the other, calls to his father, and says, "This way!" And the father trusts his son's intuition.
@oldoneeye7516
@oldoneeye7516 3 года назад
@@jamescunningham2035 while it was pretty clear that it was a story about acceptance the actual goal of the protagonists never became clear for me before I read VaVa Chess´s comment. They want to have a dragonscale to "fix the voice" of the son. But why? The problem is not ambiguity, it is that the (stutter-)problem is not presented clear enough for most viewers. The boy simply doesnt speak enough that the stutter can be percieved clearly. While I love the narrating style as such (father and son dont need many words), the narrative needs one key scene in which the problem presents itself. The one and only scene the viewer has to get the key information from as it is now is when the boy says two times "I could" and the father has to finish the sentence That is not much to go by. Especially when it can be easily explained by simple fear. The "I, I will be back before nightfall" I only recognized after playing the scene multiple times, after I knew what to listen for.

It's a rite of passage story, but it's not the boy who makes the passage, but the father. He goes from "We should go back (because I'm hurt and can't finish the journey)." through "take this .... (and be careful)." to "I only wanted the best for you." to "You're pretty wise for someone your age". The boy/young man (he's about 13) goes from protected child to trusted child to independent child/son to independent and loved man/son. Beautiful.

Depends on where you are from. There was a sect of dragons that were never seen as good to humanity because of how cruel they were. Unfortunate, because fear spreads like wildfire. Many were good, few were evil. But like an online troll, the bad always garners far more attention than good.
@pencilartguy3258
@pencilartguy3258 3 года назад
That mostly differs between cultures. Western Dragons were seen as greedy, destructive and evil. Eastern Dragons on the other hand are seen as benevolent and kind, only destructive when provoked.
@chrisrudolf9839
@chrisrudolf9839 2 года назад
There is not one single kind of "original" dragons, since tales of dragons exist in many different cultures and in very different varieties. Dragons as symbols of wisdom and luck seem to derive more from chinese and japanese mythology. The European representations in the oldest known sources are usually greedy and vicious, like the firedragon in the Beowulf saga or the dragon Fafneer in the Völsungen Saga and its "prequel" in the Edda, who is basically a human demigod who turned into a dragon because of his greed, jealousy and obsession with guarding his treasures.
@danpeterson114
@danpeterson114 2 года назад
@@pencilartguy3258 Believe it or not, if you do the research you will see that there were once many "good" dragon deities in Western culture as well, though "modern" Christianity has rewritten their own holy scriptures to change that. For example, the highest heavenly creatures in both Judasim and Christianity were called the Seraphim, and when both the ancient Jewish and Christian theologians translated the ancient Hebrew texts into Greek, they called the Seraphim "Drakons" which are dragons! The Bible even describes Yahweh (God) has a huge, shining creature with enormous wings that breathed fire from his mouth, and smoke from his nostrils, and demanded offerings of sheep, goats and cattle on a daily basis. He even controlled the weather and caused great floods when he was angry -- EXACTLY like Chinese and Japanese dragons! Moses was even ordered to build an idol of him in the form of a shining fiery flying serpent, and it was worshipped in Solomon's temple after it was built. This is all in the Bible, but they'll never tell you this stuff in Sunday School!
@pencilartguy3258
@pencilartguy3258 2 года назад
@@danpeterson114 I am aware Western influences antagonized the Dragon, especially in the Book of Genesis and Revelation which depicted Satan as such. However, there are a few things you got wrong. God doesn't have the appearance of a dragon. This is evidenced where God creates Adam in His Image. And the Bronze Serpent was not an idol, nor was it worshipped. It was held up against Moses's staff to form the shape of a Cross. The Israelites simply looked at it to be healed from the bites the seraphs inflicted upon them after they grumbled against God.

I understood it that the boy got his fathers wish indirectly when the boy said to his father about his voice that, “It doesn’t bother me.” Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t that as good as fixed in the father’s eyes? In his heart, he only wants what’s best for the boy. What was fixed was the boys vanity, if he had any, and a very healthy sense of self. A high self esteem covers his voice, and as he hits puberty, it covers how long and lanky he’s about to get, or acne, or whatever causes young adults to become self conscious.. The boy has gotten whatever comes “fixed” in how he feels about himself. His father is happier and prouder than if the boys voice had been changed. I don’t know if that was his wish or not, but the dragon is both kind and wise. Good dragon!

He had to or die and what was his wish... you the viewer have to guess. 3) Good effects good lighting.. I would have tossed in a little more color grading. 4) I had to turn on the comments to understand the dialog line. "Either they are worthy" I heard it as "I they are worthy" 5) I have no issue with sending off a kid to his doom.. this is the magic middle ages. kids are there to do work and nothing more. 6) the kid figures out the giant lizard infront of him is the same little lizard he was carrying. This is a good one, I especially loved the way the dragon found the kid, made the trees hold back his father, so it could play with the child, malevolence and harsh aggression is not always a dragon's way, many were quite friendly and mischeivious so long as you were not a warrior or a killer. You can tell the dragon is forced to grant the kid's wish, because of the reaction a little puffiness instead of just eating the kid, if the dragon eats the kid a whole village or army might come and bother it.

Yes, you got it right. Sorry to burst everyone's touchy feel good interpretation of the film but the dragon ate the child. How so? 1. The title, A dragon's scale. The film had very little to do with physical scales other than a few brief mentions. and some visuals. The scale is in reference to measuring or judgement, as in the scales of justice, as in Mene mene tekel upharsin. The main theme of the film is whether or not one is worthy. The Dragon is Not kind. The many bones are evidence of that. 2. The father was lacking in redeeming qualities. He killed the little green winged seed creature. He wanted to turn back when the going got tough. He sent his son by himself to kill the dragon. He didn't so much want what was best for his son, but rather he was ashamed of his son. Everything we see as his character is developed overwhelmingly shows us that he was a Looser! 3. The writer certainly introduced the idea that the dragon might eat the boy. The boy couldn't come up with his own answer to the dragon's question as far as the audience could see. 4. When the "boy" reappears, the audience is never given the answer to the big question in any meaningful way. "What did he wish for?". Had the boy lived, we would have had some meaningful answer. Simply gaining the "acceptance" of a looser father is no great wish. 5. The "boy", actually the female shape shifting dragon, judges the father to be unworthy. The one thing that the father thinks he did right in his life, producing a wise child, is dismissed by the dragon who attributes any such quality to the mother.

Lovely gentle fantasy and very enjoyable, although I couldn`t see whether the talking lizards were in the tree stems or whether they were in fact eyes, maybe I need to watch it again.

Очень важный заголовок ролика ! Даёт представление о всех участниках конкурса . Очень умилительно , непрофессионально и все на фоне мистики и природы . В чем сила брат ?

Loved the kid's dialogue when he made the gecko stay. "It's much safer here" Not knowing that he was being tested Perhaps the reply by one of the respondents was right, that the boy wished to be accepted. Sweet movie

Cool sexy lizard. The voice is divine. The acting is at a high level. The graphics and sound are great! Camera work is a little weak, but on the whole it reflects well the picture and general and close plans. Authors, you've got a great short! If there was a full length, I would go to the cinema!

Most dragons can talk, and I'm sure the fantasy world this takes place in has lots of mystical things that he's accustomed to seeing and possibly can talk to.

Not at all. What's wrong with you? Your pattern recognition circuits are cooked. The GEICO lizard stands on 2 feet and speaks with a male voice. You're doing too much drugs. You should send your excess to me.

yes, it is true, a dragon who grants wishes is still not able to change, there are limits not to exceed all the same. Geico has a male voice? I can not hear the difference, (oh my gosh, grandpa gets deaf!)

My main criticism for this fantastic short film is that their costumes are cleaner than their faces. It makes it look like a costume rather than being actual lived in clothes. It feels like they started existing right before the camera said action. Doesn’t ruin the film by any means. They do a ton right. Just something to think about for anyone out there looking to make a short film or something. If your characters are dirty then their clothes should be dirty too.
