The lyrics of Away in a Manger are thought to originally have been a poem written as part of the dramatic presentations given by the American Lutherans in 1883, marking the 400th anniversary of the birth of their founder Martin Luther. The author of the poem is unknown. There were numerous musical settings of the poem, of which two have survived. The first melody in this medley was composed by William Kirkpatrick and published in 1895. The second melody was composed by James Murray, published in 1887.
The lyrics:
Away in a manger
No crib for a bed
The little Lord Jesus
Laid down His sweet head
The stars in the bright sky
Looked down where He lay
The little Lord Jesus
Asleep on the hay
The cattle are lowing
The Baby awakes
But little Lord Jesus
No crying He makes
I love You, Lord Jesus
Look down from the sky
And stay by my side
Until morning is nigh
Be near me, Lord Jesus
I ask You to stay
Close by me forever
And love me I pray
Bless all the dear children
In Your tender care
And fit us for heaven
To live with You there
