I have to be honest, both of these suitcases are quite awesome. If the Away Travel suitcase is the one that fits your budget more, then I can still recommend this suitcase. Is the Rimowa better, in a lot of ways yes, it is a little but better. It is built better than any suitcase I have ever seen, rolls smoother than any other suitcase I have ever rolled and is just an amazing piece of luggage,. That said, I cannot say it is worth twice as much as the Away Travel Carry On Aluminum Edition. There are upgrades, but there should be at the price. Am I happy I spend the extra? I am , however I know I would have been happy with the Away Travel most of the time as well. It is a hard justification, but I do respect and enjoy quality, and I am happy with my decision in the end.

Ive been a Rimowa advocate for 10 years now, not only is it great luggage but the service is awesome too, last time i was in KL i visited the Rimowa store they noticed one of my cases dented/ damaged and asked me to leave it with them . When i returned they had knocked the dents out and realigned the case so would close perfectly, (No Charge). I was so impressed i purchased another. Yes they are expensive but i am sort of person that buys an item once and thats it.

I travel internationally for work- I love that Rimowa has a store almost everywhere I go- And will repair it on the spot. Tumi I have had to throw away two suitcases while traveling.

Awesome review. We often ask ourselves is something really worth double the money. It's only after you touch it that you realize YES. Have you seen the Rimowa Cabin Essential Sleeve? I'm considering it (for the color) but a few reviews noted that the exterior pocket cheapens the look.

Very detailed review. Love it. I was on the fence between away large and rimowa trunk but I think I'm going with the rimowa. I already have 2 limited editions rimowa that I haven't been able to use yet but you have convinced me that rimowa is definitely more superior.

I am only one trip in and love it! The way it rolls, the way the compression panels pack, it is a solid piece of luggage. I will wait to finish my review after my next trip, but I am happy with my purchase at least!

I own several pieces in both and I will say that the roll is smoother in the Rimowa (BTW the "w" is pronounced as a "v" in German so it's pronounced Rimova) but I feel like I can put more in the Away. One thing I'll say is I prefer the locking system on the Rimowa. I took my medium rose gold Away on a trip last week and saw that the airline managed to crack the TSA locks. I guess they slammed it on the locks and the latch of the locks were actually cracked I appreciate that the lock is sunken in for the Rimowa original and seemingly better protected. Away has a wonderful warranty and replaced the suitcase. Both good suitcases for those who avoid zipper suitcases.

One thing I like about the Rimowa Original, is the recessed latches with a side button for release. Since I carry-on and never lock my latches, I feel this is more secure than the Away latches which stand out from the bag and have a front button that could get inadvertently pushed. WeI've owned 8 Rimowa bags since 2008 - mostly Salsa Deluxe polycarbonate. The poly carbonate bags died from corner cracks at about 12 years and over 1M air miles each. We did have the corners of one poly bag repaired by Rimowa, but we understand they no longer do this. I have a 15 year old poly Salsa Deluxe Business Trundle in to Rimowa now for repair. It cost me $35 for the repair (replace the elastic pass-through strap) and $20 for shipping to Rimowa. They pay the return shipping! The aluminum Original Cabin Plus I have now has a couple of marks after about 12 flights over two years, but still looks very good.

What hasn't been considered at all now is future repairs. Rimowa cases can be sent to repair and refurbishment locations around the world. The suitcases may still not look like new, but you can continue to use them. I have my doubts about the other case and other manufacturers. You just have to take a look at what is partially damaged, then you can dispose of other suitcases. I have a suitcase with damaged wheels and no chance of having it repaired without too much effort. Therefore, a new purchase is on the agenda. Since the suitcase is very large, a new Rimowa would be really expensive. I've had a Rimowa Cabin Classic for years and I absolutely love it. Have the chance to get a very good used one and won't regret it. I'm curious to see what a comparison would look like in five years of use.

One of the features i did NOT like on the Rimowa was the shape of the telescoping handle. The angle of the handle felt wrong at the 90 degree bend. It felt too sharp to my hand. Not sure on the Away version. Although from the video it looked a little more rounded to me.

Loejl voja or Rimowa? Only problem is Romowa locks sort of stick out. I need a zipperless suitcase for security but sturdy because I will be traveling fulltime and it will be checked

After watching this enlightening review, I choose Away. Only real every day advantages I see are, ball bearings in the wheels and more adjustable handle. Two things that would never make a difference to me. I like the Away’s compression better. Velcro in a bag this expensive? The only reason to buy Rimowa is to make a fashion statement.

Biggest issue that has put me off the the Rimowa is the warranty (and that is compared to Away). It’s just not good anymore, before LVMH bought them they had a great warranty like Briggs but then they went to a 5 year one and then a ‘lifetime’ one which covers basically nothing apart from defects.

This is why I decided not to get a rimowa for my checked luggage; if an airline damages your suitcase, rimowa will tell you to deal with the airline yourself. On the other hand, Away will ask you to send a picture and courier a brand new one to you

Great video! I just wanted to verify, this is the Cabin size? Would the Cabin Plus still fit in most aircraft bins or do you think that size would actually be too big?

Yes, Cabin. I did not get the plus size as I have occasionally flown the cheaper airlines that really crack down on the luggage. With that said, I believe that the Plus still may fit in the tester units as well, but I did not look as much into that size.

Cabin plus fits fine in A320 and 737 and above luggage bins - thats why British Airways & AA set that size as max. Hwever som eairlines officially dont allow that size. Qatar has a ridiculously narrow max size ( that alost no bag meets so they ignore it) abut Ryanair requites a very thin bag. Romowa have an airline compatibility checker for each bag on their website

i just bought the TecknoMonster titanium carryon. HOLY BATMAN. everything about it is super over the top premium, except for the silk liner. I would have preferred a leather liner, but silk is lighter. They do Leather liners on their carbon fiber cases, but the titanium carryon only gets silk. The reason I write this is the wheels. they have machined from a block of aluminum wheels on high precision ball bearings. If you spin them, and go get a cup of coffee, they will still be spinning when you get back. They are almost too good as they will roll away in a slight breeze! Highly recommend TM luggage. Crazy expensive but well worth it.

Very cool that it is Titanium, but the design is not to great. Really expected more from an Italian design. :( But thanks for mentioning. For me an aluminium Rimowa all the way.

I wish the Rimowa had soft return handles because they put a 3m bump stop so that the handle won't hit the aluminum. Looks kinda silly on an expensive piece of luggage.

Am I the only one who was shocked that he didn’t mention that the Away compressor is detachable as well. I have all of the Away aluminum line and I never use the compressors. I’ve detached all of them from my luggages.

@@87andsmith it’s the portion IG the suitcase that allows you to press down items you’ve put in the suitcase it order to fit thing properly. Watch from 13:52 onward and you’ll see what he’s talking about.

I own the bigger aluminum carry on. It would of definitely held more. Im not a fan of Rimowa compression. I’m not sure how long the Velcro will last. And remember you still have to pack shoes, toiletries and harder items. Compression would not apply. For the money I believe it’s a no brainer. If you have more disposable cash then why not. Personal preference. Remember why we are even watching this video. Travel….And enjoy yourselves.

Since LVMH acquired Rimowa, it may not be worth it anymore unless you are a fan of the brand. However, if you are in the US, Tumi is highly recommended.

Actually I noticed that the rimowa flexes more when open even thought it has three hinges. The away has two large hinges he’s whole the rimowa has three smaller hinges

I guess as a long term I vestment the third hinge the aluminum shape make it more sturdy and durable and it seems that wheels also seems to be more reliable overtime and take into account the brand and if it will last longer . Moreover working conditions and standards makes the rimowa a better deal for a lifetime use

Pay $1400 for a 12 lb. carry on to carry 6 lbs in it, or you can get the 32 inch for $1750 and have the luggage handlers beat the hell out of it in LAX.

Now do Monos vs. Rimowa. In my opinion, Monos is better than Away. Monos is Canadian and they even have a hybrid model that is part aluminum part polycarbonite.

They aren’t. If you go by the size and what the airline tells you, sure, but it actually fits the dimensions of the tester at the airport. I have flown United and American with it already.

I love bags and carry bags like Hermes, Loewe, Prada… but I don’t see the point of Rimowa. If you’re a frequent traveler for business, more than likely you fly business class so u don’t need to fight for luggage space and you probably won’t check in your Rimowa, why would you need such strong suitcase? If you buy it because u want one, then fine. If you buy it because it lasts forever, you’re lying. I use light weight suitcases that hold more than Rimowa, specially the expandable type, feel safe to check it in, not afraid being stolen or broken into, replace it when I see a new one I like and I travel a lot too for work and fun, never broke luggage once in the last 30 years.

Rimowa weights 3.5kgs. Most Airlines allow 8kgs including a smaller second bag like a laptopn bag or Purse. So how can one justify the weight? I use a cheap made in china carryon which I bought from the supermarket for €40 and it weights less than 2 kgs and still going strong. I always buy expensive things that last because I look at cost per use or wear. But how does one justify paying $1400 for Rimowa that has less utility?? Someone please explain to me. Thank You.

It depends on the airline you fly as to what your weight restrictions are. Some airlines only restrict the size of the carry on and not the weight specifically, while also possibly implementing a maximum weight for any bag. It really comes down to what airline you fly. As for why Rimowa at the price, what anything at the price. I don’t like the Rimowa suitcase because of the money, but it’s build quality is second to none and I appreciate that. I have a few other suitcases, but I always want to grab the Rimowa because it rolls better, steps better, and I just love the size of it. You can make the same argument for anything, like a car. Why would you buy a Mercedes if the Chevy drives great at a fraction of the cost. It’s about the quality and experience.

@@techgooch i travel internationally about 6 times a year. Not a lot but enough. Most Airlines have the 7-8kg weight limit on carryon bags. Many airlines want to weigh your carry-on bag. Sometimes they allow it but they want to record the weight. This happened to me last week. My carryon suitcase was 12 kgs and laptop bag was 8 kgs. So in total 20 kgs but the limit was 8kgs but I was allowed to bring them on board. I was lucky. I have experienced being stopped too for even 2 kgs over and had to pay for extra baggage. The build quality for carry-ons become irrelevant to some extent because carryon bags in general are not subject to abuse of bagage handlers. Build quality is more important for checked in bags. I appreciate the argument to buy expensive but quality items. I spend a lot on cars, shoes, watches and sometimes clothes as well because I look at cost per use or cost per wear. But in this case, not able to see the value proposition.

I don’t think that is a Laundry Bag with your suitcase. It’s probably a dust bag to put your suitcase in for storage. I use Brics Luggage and all of my bags came with Dust Bags. Great Video…

My personal view is that Rimowa, while very nice, is overpriced for what you get. When a luggage handler tosses a Rimowa, that ensuing dent is going to be VERY painful for the owner! And if you're traveling in many emerging locations, Rimowa just screams "Steal me" or "Rob this person, they've got $$$$$!"

No doubt it's overpriced, it's a luxury item, but it will last a lifetime! If the price scars you, definitely go with the Away Travel suitcase, very solid for the money!

@@techgooch Totally agree and forgot to tell you what an excellent review this was. I used to travel w/ colleagues that favored Rimowa and, sadly, their checked luggage spent half its life in the repair shop. I suspect baggage handlers are harder on luxury bags! Also, when traveling to certain locations, the LAST thing you want to have is an obvious display of wealth. Valid or not, luxury luggage is a big marker for thieves who case airports in many countries.

I wouldn't buy one, but I received one as a gift. Seems like it is made for instagram (which I don't use) or someone that needs to have a brand name to make them feel more important. The away carry on won't even fit a pair of shoes. Rimowa? That is for someone doesn't care. If they cared, they give the money to help poor people or widows rather than wasting on something like that.
