Mike and Melissa, I recommend for comfort and long-term safety as you get older a one-level cabin would be best. Lofts are always heat traps, and stairs become a hazard. Keep to a single story, and you cannot go wrong.

Great looking cabins you can add to your property. Really like the two story one, even add a bedroom on the back. Up here we have to have minimum of R20 insulation, but for your application wouldnt take much to hold the heat in. Great job on the pumpkin growing. Looking fwd to seeing how it turns out.

WOW, brings back some great memories. Over 40 years ago we used to live on the back side of Cheat lake. There was little there except our small neighborhood & a big trailer park. We were just off the Pierpont exit. We used to travel to Cooper's Rock a lot. We have on our living room walls some 1 x14 pictures of Copper's Rock outlook in the fall. Some of them are off my kids that are grown up. It is a beautiful place in the fall. We don't live in WV any longer but it still is my home.

Things are coming together nicely. I like Melissa's idea of putting the cabin on top of a garage. Only draw back is climbing stairs when you get older. We built one step up from ground level. It's works out nice as We are in the Geezer stage of life in Our 70s. 4' wide stairway down to the basement with railings on both sides are easy to use.

My wife and I looked at similar cabins to put on our lot on Lake Hartwell but after a lot of prayer and thought, went with a Barn Wood Builders cabin. She passed away as we were breaking ground, but I decided to go ahead and finish it. Glad we made that decision as I am much happier with this one than I would have been with the other. I agree....stay with everything on a single level.....one day stairs will not be your friend. Love the property and your channel. Keep it up!

We lived in Lebanon county,Pa. And had a shed built with a second floor and the roof was hinged just like you mentioned! The shed was 14' x 28', after they set the shed it took them about 3 hrs to raise the roof, which was metal, and complete the ridge, stairway and all the trim. We also had the sides of the building built with board and batten. A real nice building!

Mike and Melissa, I truly enjoy your videos and your enthusiasm for all that you do. My opinion on the cabin is to take a very “serious” look at the Amish built option. You both have stated many times how the “property” is what you have wanted for a long time and how much you look forward to enjoying it. Your zest for the outdoors can be fulfilled by prepping the drive, trails and cabin lot in anticipation of having the cabin built. Should timing play out at its best, next spring and summer should be wonderful. I would also suggest, the cabin and to satisfy your need to build things, you could add a garage yourself.
@bama4346

Great idea Mike for the Little Cabin. I thought of doing the same thing with the land I used to own looking over a small spring-fed lake. My suggestion would be nixing the front porch giving you more living area in it's place. You can use the timber and saw mill you have and add a porch on the front later.

The cabins are the way to go. And they fold down for delivery and back up when they are in place. There's nothing wrong with that. I'd like to see it folded also. It would be very interesting. I've been selling and working for the Amish for 25yrs. I took one of the double-wide garages (I saw one in the backround of your video) and removed the overhead doors, added a full-width porch which is inset to where the overhead doors were (So the gable roof is over the porch) and and made a hunting cabin. It is more of an open floor plan with bunks on the back wall, a kitchenette on the right and a living room, landing area when you walk in off the porch.

My wife and I had a 2 story garage like the one in your video turned into a cabin 3 years ago. We had them delete the garage doors and put extra windows and walk in door installed. It was neat to see them deliver it in 2 sections. The driver had a trailer like the one your sisters shed was brought in. Once both sections were delivered the driver was able to line the 2 sections perfect together. The next day the Amish crew showed up and had it under roof with a tin roof in 6 hours time.

I think those cabins are a great idea. There's one thing that stands out as needing an adjustment and that is where they have the upstairs railings terminating within window frames (in front of the glass). Some redesign there would fix that. Maybe a gambrel roof would give you more headroom on the upstairs balcony.

You’re right about the growth rings.. Now that you’re the land owner,I’m sure you’ll eventually have time for land management..That’s the interesting part of buying land is you’re buying into someone else’s land management or lack of.. That’s why all property doesn’t sell at a fixed price per acre.. To clear cut and start over isn’t something people will do because they only view property as something for their lifetime.. For instance,I’m planting hardwoods on my land that I will never see the final value of,but the grand kids will …I enjoy the thought that I’m making the land better for the future while using it now as well..Anyway, I’d enjoy what you have considering it is what it is..

Single story is the way to go. As you get older the stairs will become more of a challenge, and it's much easier to heat and cool. Consider a composting toilet, or incinerator toilet, and rainwater catchment system with a filter for drinking water. You may only need a gray water catchment area going this route, and could always add a septic and drill a well later down the road. In the trees like you are, solar is out of the question, but you might want to consider an portable generator, and power inverter with a battery bank. You could power up the batteries and bring them with you, and if they need to be recharged use the generator. Using batteries would help maintain the quite the woods offer, or just bring in electricity from the grid.

A little cabin would be pretty nice for deer season.......and long weekends.

Hey Mike and Melissa guys you can build one of those tiny cabins very cheap there are tons of plans for all shapes and sizes of them on the web and you already have a mill and equipment to put one of those together and not creating yourself another bill ,not to mention the RU-vid content you would create by doing a series on creating and DIY from the bare footprint to the completed cabin

I think buying a cabin was what they wanted so it would be in place by fall/winter timeline. Be alot quicker then building one.

You can save about 2/3rds of the price by building your own but I think they would have to factor in hotel bills while they built and travel costs. I remodeled a house long distance and it was not cheap.

@@timliggett5088 you are right, they could prefab the cabin at home and haul it down there and have it up in a weekend. Hopefully they are in an area that you don’t have to fuss with codes and such.

Mike, I think your stuff is great. If these little house idea is a definite way to go. I was looking at all the wasted space the stairs take out of the second floor. If you had them extend rooftop over the entryway, you could put the staircase underneath off to one side. I don’t know, whatever. I do think your going to get a bunch of fun up there in WV.
