Hi Mike: the reason why cilantro taste like soap to some people is because it it a genetic issue People who say that cilantro taste like soap is missing a certain gene take messes with the olfactory receptors. Which Means their smell receptor is throw off. Just some FYI . But Love your channel .
Tonjia Cooper That me it tastes like some one hasn't washed or rinsed the washing up liquid off the plate, knife, fork or spoon, it's not very nice at all. It was a guy at my Indian takeaway who told me what was making me taste sope in the Indian food, then I looked it up on Google and there it was I'm one of that smallish group that says it tastes like sope.
you just made my day Mike! I'm a Filipina teaching English here in Changchun, Jilin. and everyone of those dishes that you sampled are an absolute favorite of mine. the best part of it is I can eat them anytime I want to, anywhere here in Jilin. in fact, you just made me crave for that heavenly lamb chop =) Love your channel!
Food looks sounds DELICIOUS. ALWAYS wanna jump in the screen and join in. Ingredients in the cold appetizer reminds me of a Vietnamese sublike cold sandwich. Grew up on healthy foods like tofu in the 70s longbefore US people knew it exist- i love Chinese food -really excited to try the many options of authentic Asian foods out there-first HOT POT!!Hilarious how the girl in red behind you wants to hide after a while in front of the camera:) aaawkward- been there done that myself. Anyways Good luck on more food adventures Mike your a real "FOODMONGER":)
Some people have a genetic mutation that causes them to taste cilantro differently. To them cilantro tastes like soap. If I can remember correctly, the trait that causes people to dislike cilantro is mostly found in people or European descent.
I just can't do without watching your videos like twice to thrice daily, I'm so addicted to you Mike. I wish you can just reply me for once I swear it will make my day. but all the same if wishes were horses I would ride....😢; nothing I would have wished for more than to eat with you someday, someplace😋😍.
In Canada where I live we only get Americanized Chinese food with one exception and the only reason I can get the authentic Chinese food from wherever my friend is from is because his mom runs a little Canadian restaurant and she makes us food from her childhood. She doesn't speak English and her son has never told me exactly where his mom was from other than China .
Omg was she in the witness protection program? Hid her face, then moved, and at the end the woman glared and looked annoyed. Wth. Thanks for sharing. Food looked amazing.
Strictly Dumpling Hey Mike, if I ever make it to New York City, I'll hit you up. I'd like to try that Muslim Lamb chop. Also, gotta admit, I'm really liking this channel as it's making me hungry. Lol. (What's funny is that I'm already eating as I write this.)
Mickey, try not to smack too much cause you to swallow too much air and you may get bloated....I can't smack, slurp or anything that i can swallow air or I will end up in the ER...lol...love your videos, keep up the good work....
HI Mike, thanks for all the great videos! Is Muslim Lamb Chop halal? I am assuming not as there is pork being served there. But please let me know when you get a chance. Thanks!
I think it's annoying when a restaurant doesn't want to make a certain dish on their menu because it takes too much time or too much of something to do, but it's like HELLOOOOO if you didn't want to make the dish on the menu then don't put it on the menu... i had a experience like this at a Chinese restaurant in SF
Would it be possible to write out what you eat in the description? I'm an expat living in Korea and there are a lot of Chinese immigrants here, there restaurants are always all in Chinese and so most of the time I'm just guessing >.
Theres actually a scientific reason why some people think that cilantro tastes like soap it is in their genetics I believe it's something they were born without that distorts the flavor of cilantro.
Hey Mike.... how the hell do you eat soup with chopsticks? i've tried and its a hard pass for me, it made the table of friends laugh though.....love your vid's
can i be your food partner in flushing. like seriously, I live in flushing but I don't know what to eat because I'm new to the chinese food culture. mouth watering....... T-T. share the food
The whole cilantro tasting like soap thing is partly a genetic and partly a cultural phenomenon. Some people have a gene that makes them more sensitive to aldehydes. Aldehydes are the fat molecules that cilantro and soaps share, thus some people taste the aldehyde and associates it with soap. But it's also a cultural thing because there are many cultures that use lots and lots of cilantro in their comfort food so people associate it with warm fuzzies instead of soap. :D I'm so jealous of the people who will get to eat with you! Your videos makes me so hungry xD
I love it when you name the dishes in Chinese. 🌷This is like getting a free Chinese lesson.❤ Thanks for sharing info about Halal food which is hard to find any where.
Some people say cilantro tastes like soap because there is actually a gene that will cause the cilantro to taste like soap to them. I am glad that isn't the case for me. (:
I was very fortunate to grow up in San Diego and be surrounded by great Mexican food with lots of cilantro. (: Tacos stuffed with tongue, onion and cilantro is sooo good.
Mike, i really don't understand spoken english very good, but your sincere face expressions when you tasting the food are beyond words! i think you can transmit the taste and flavor through the laptop screen and thousand of kilometers:))) that is why your videos are amazing))) thank you and good luck!
it's a genetic condition that rewires the human tastebuds to taste cilantro differently. My brother has that condition, he absolutely refuses to eat it.
Mike, I love your videos. You do a really good job with this. You make this food look amazing! I love Chinese cuisine. The food you eat makes me want to get on a plane to NYC right now. I am from the Deep South- Baton Rouge , LA. I don't think we have food like this here. But, I would love for you to send a list of some of what u r eating. In both languagesplease. I want to know what to order when I am out. Even though I don't think we have some of the same foods. We have several Chinese restaurants, some Thai, and Vietnamese. Generally I love it all! I want to do your tomato and rice dish in the rice cooker. What kind of rice do you use? It looks sticker than what I use. It also seems like you use less water in your cooker too. That looked so good! We do have a few Asian markets. I apologize if that is offensive. I love this cuisine. We don't have a big population of Chinese folks here. Maybe in bigger cities I could get some of what you are filming about. Keep them coming, hungry!!
1/3 way through the video, he says "I'm so hungry". He's always hungry, and weighs about 125 lbs. Amazing. He could devour a horse and not gain a single pound.
Not a huge fan of NE cuisine. (Suan Cai and the like), which is weird, because I love preserved food. (Salami, Kimchee, Pickles, Olives, etc). It just has a flavor profile I'm not into. Your video made it look better, but I was still sort of "No. No Thank You. DEF NOPE.".
Hi Buddy,I grew up in Hoboken but live at the moment in Netherlands! Now what I would really like to know is: how do you make those sweet potato candies, and what is it Chinese name? PS i AM NOW A FOODIE....cook ok,and watched some of your more strange videos too whichI quite enjoyed...question? how do you make a living,it seems you have allot of time on your hands?
Nice change up in the food. Looks great. Prince street seems to be popular and not as nuts as Main St. Flushing. I love the BBQ cart on Kisenna Blvd right above Mains St. Super good. They put a great glaze on their meats.. And they have beef tendon, which the Manhattan and Sunset Park doesn't have. So good.
Cilantro tasting like soap is a genetic thing. It only occurs in about 14% of the population but they're taste buds are just designed out differently. Another commented people with these buds will make is that it taste like aluminum.
Fun fact: Cilantro tasting like soap is a genetic thing. They are actually not tasting cilantro the same way that we are, to them, the chemical composition actually tastes like soap due to the way their nerves are configured. And all this time I thought they just had terrible taste. It's a similar situation to people thinking Brussels sprouts tastes horrible or being able to smell the way asparagus makes urine stink. All of them are somewhat common genetic quirks.
Does anyone know if this is still a thing? Because I live right in flushing and I always go to restaurants around fu run but I never go inside, maybe because I'm intimidated or something, but I would love to go.
I live on Long Island and ever since I have gone to Flushing,I realize the Asian food out here is really yuck in comparison. I try to get out that way once a week.Great video, ty.
Cilantro tastes like soap. It does to me and Chef Greg Easter from the RU-vid channel Cooking in Russia explains it. It is ones genetics that determine if Cilantro tastes like soap. I find it isn't like that, but I have to use a small amount and the crazy thing about it all is that I love coriander. One of the things I definitely want to try is shadow beni or more widely know as culantro. they say it is stronger than cilantro, but I have a feeling that I would love it as it doesn't have that soap taste.
I like 拔丝芋头because I love the consistency and taste of taro. But sweet potato is good too. In fact BaSi is good with almost any root vegetable I guess.
I am going to tell you I love coming to your channel just to hear about the food I am blind and I will tell you it makes me so dog gone hungry if I ever get to New York City I’m coming in like a Tasmanian devil so that I can eat up everything I can find
