Should I start selling this jig? I think it's pretty awesome! I built it to help me assemble a 512-pixel, ChromaMesh 3" CLEAR matrix from Boscoyo Studio.

Looking good there ! ! ! I'm building my mega tree with 1200 nodes... after Christmas I plan to turn the tree on its side and string them between 4x4 frame to make a make shift matrix for summer time party lights. Right now the tree will only have 12 strands of 100 each. I hope to add more strands after Christmas for the matrix. I cant wait to see your show this year. As always I enjoy seeing what you are working on.

Jeff -- really interested in seeing video of the Chroma-Mesh in action. My old matrix has about had it. It was a home made model on 10' EMT with 2" spacing, 12 rows of 50, it and the box it is in weighs about 100 lbs! looking for a new LIGHTER solution for next year. Thanks again for the Video's they make my week!~ barry in Oklahoma

Thanks! Yeah, this is really nice. I had a problem with the wires pulling too hard on the left side (which you'll see in the videos I'm editing), but I fixed that this weekend. Now, if I could just come up with some cooler patterns for it. lol!

Another option is to lay the modular matrix on a floor or large surface, face down, and use a 1/2 inch right angle pvc elbow attached to a 2 foot piece os straight 1/2 inch pvc pipe. Place the pvc elbow under the modular matrix, first pixel hole, and push the pixel in from the back. It will just click in. No deburring tool necessary. The 1/2 inche pvc elbow is the perfect circumference for allowing the pixel to pop into the hole, with nominal pressure.

Love your videos. Random question for the master: I'm trying to put together a full package of open source arduino software with a synced light show that is plug and play on a NodeMCU. Before I start syncing music I'd like to know I'm not going to get a cease and desist notice. Do any of the DIY LED site have a list of songs that can be used in public domain? Thanks.
@CanispaterChristmas
@CanispaterChristmas 6 лет назад
Haha! Thanks! None that I'm aware of. You might ask your question on the forums or FB groups. You'll probably get a knowledgeable answer there. However, since I post stuff on RU-vid, I do know that the deal with music all depends on the record company. Some don't care, some want attribution, some want money, some don't let you use it at all. There is no standard so pick a song you want to use then contact the record company and tell them what you want to do. Make sure to give them a clear benefit like mentioning you'd be promoting their music or something to that effect. Keep the technical jargon to a minimum (pretend you're explaining your idea to a 5 year old). If they say "no", move on to another company. Once you get a "yes", sequence that.

Hi Jeff. I blame you in getting me into this hobby 😛lol. Anyhow you mention that you’re going to use one differential controller then using one port for each string of 128 lights. My question is why? Would it not be easier to not splice then connect all 500 + lights to one port and create virtual universe? of course you would have to power inject. (I’m just a beginner and I’ve learned pretty much everything from you). :).
@CanispaterChristmas
@CanispaterChristmas 6 лет назад
Haha. Well, I think I can run it that way without having to inject any power at all - it's a little simpler that way. But your way is certainly possible. All of my strings are 300 pixels or less and it's really just a personal choice. If I was short on ports, I may have wired it differently. What's a virtual universe - just grouping more than one together? :)

Another great video. I think I have a problem. I just bought 2 Chroma-Mesh clear matrix 24x48 - 2". I know that i will have to figure out how to break this up to run on my Falcon F16v3 controller but I don't know how. Do I HAVE to absolutely split the pixels (576 each, 12 rows) and cut the wire? Or can I put one falcon channel on 600 lights and the other 552 on another channel?
@CanispaterChristmas
@CanispaterChristmas 3 года назад
An F16 handles 1024 pixels per port if you run 20FPS or around 640 per port if you run 40FPS, but you can split the matrix up however you want.
@gwolanin
@gwolanin 3 года назад
@@CanispaterChristmas Thank you for the info. With that said, should I run my whole show at 40 fps? I think I plan on having my RPi-Zero + Falcon PiCap showing my megatree and sidewalk outline, and the Falcon F16v3 showing everything else. (I hope that made some kind of sense)
@CanispaterChristmas
@CanispaterChristmas 3 года назад
Frame rate is more of a personal preference thing. I run almost everything at 20FPS. If I have a particularly jumpy song or I want to do something crazy on the matrix, I'll go 40, but most is 20. Some will fight to the death for 40 so Mac vs Windows. 😂If you want to do 40, you just have to plan for it with smaller strings.

Jeff, is it possible to provide a line drawing of your controllers and lights. I am still a little fuzzy on what I need for a basic setup. I have a computer that I can use to run the show and control the lights. Thank you.
@CanispaterChristmas
@CanispaterChristmas 6 лет назад
I don't have anything specific posted anywhere but have videos outlining a basic system (see ru-vid.com/group/PLFyrAfJ-kKd4ZfPdXWIt8v_bav61mW_KW). In addition to the computer, you'll need pixels, power supply(s) and a pixel controller.

So I just got this same matrix for next year. By going with 4 sets do you have to inject power? I was trying to figure a way around doing that. I was going to use the f16 for this and my windows upstairs. All in all it would be around 600 pixels.on the f16
@CanispaterChristmas
@CanispaterChristmas 5 лет назад
I didn’t inject any power, but also ran it at 30% brightness. If you go higher, you might need to inject.

So you used a 4 port controller. Did you have to power inject. Or by using 12 volts worked out without?
@CanispaterChristmas
@CanispaterChristmas 5 лет назад
I didn't need to inject power on this, but I run it at 30% brightness so that helps. It's a 4-port differential receiver that works in concert with the F48 (or an F16V3).

Why did you use square pixels? I thought people usually use bullet pixels?
@CanispaterChristmas
@CanispaterChristmas 5 лет назад
The square pixels are a little shorter and the plan was to put this against the house so space was a premium. They look the same from the front and bullets probably fit a little better. :)
@nwamtb
@nwamtb 5 лет назад
@@CanispaterChristmas oh ok. I just thought that THAT the problem with the hole size was due to the fact that the squares are bigger.
@CanispaterChristmas
@CanispaterChristmas 5 лет назад
I think they’re both supposed to be 12mm but I also had a suggestion to lay the Chromamesh flat and push the pixels through something hard and I wouldn’t have had to enlarge the holes. I may get a second one next year and try it that way or use bullets... or both... :My whole display is kind of one big experiment anyway. Haha.

So dumb question.. which pixels are these that you are using?, ie: what are the chip/pixel enclosure dimensions? Maybe you have a sponsored link for the pixels I have overlooked as I'm sure you may have had this ?? a zillion times. Great overviews for newbies.. I've been interfacing my own stuff for years with 5050/2811 strips + SanDevices + LightShowPro but the xLights/Falcon/Meanwell and pixel setups with Boscoyo products have reinvigorated my interest in not reverting to a "boring" setup this year.
@CanispaterChristmas

Thanks! These are just WS2811 square pixels. I buy all my pixels directly from Ray (China). They are roughly 12mm heads with a 1-1.5cm square back. if I wanted to an animated GIF in my display, would the 3" spacing look ok or should i use closer spaced chroma-mesh?
@CanispaterChristmas
@CanispaterChristmas 4 года назад
Personal preference and depends on what you are animating. 3" is not going to look like a TV Monitor, but if the GIF is not too big, probably OK. If you are picky about it, go denser. You might get some idea of what it will look like in the xLights preview so that might tell you which way to go. Lighting nerds will say go more dense. :)
