Awesome Gray Tree Frog mating call video

Mating call / mating chorus of the gray tree frog (Hyla versicolor) and a pair of mating tree frogs in amplexus. It's springtime in New Hampshire and I headed into the pond/swamp to get some updated HD footage of my favorite New Hampshire amphibian. A warm evening in mid-May brought out a deafening chorus of male frogs trying to attract a mate and the result is hopefully the greatest gray treefrog mating call video that the world has ever seen. I play this video for my grays all the time. The oldest only changed a few months ago but the sounds of the calls peaks their interest.

This is the first time I have noticed it but croaking sounds very similar to purring. This sounds like a summer night in the swamps where I grew up.

It's 3/11/2019 and I heard them after 2am outside, wonderful sound. Is it a mating call or are they just waking up I wonder??? Southern Ocean County NJ Pinelands...

The sound in this video is definitely the mating call, but they do sometimes vocalize outside of the mating season. It seems awfully early for them to be out, but perhaps where you are in NJ it's significantly warmer. Usually mating calls start in late April when night air temps approach 60 degrees.

They can be pretty well camouflaged. If you cup your hand behind your ear and turn in the direction you think the sound is coming from it can help pinpoint a location.

Clauss Video Archive I find shutting my eyes really helps pinpoint where it’s at. It’s an old hunters trick. That being said he was right next to me and camouflaged well. In retrospect I think he was inside a flower pot. 👍🏼
