Ivanchuk would have still checkmated carlsen but yes carlsen could have moved king h3 to avoid checkmate but that would be useless because he would have still been checkmated
everyone is like woa that was brilliant, and ivanchuk is brilliant, but that was a big blunder by magnus, ivanchuk had a break there, thats why he jumped, he did not by all means expected magnus to do that
no, there was no mate on the board in that game, Carlsen resigned when he blundered and allowed Chuky's Queen to infiltrate the first rank and one move to go before a mate could be delivered
The title say "checkmates" but the ending isn't a checkmate, lol - Carlsen resigns after he realizes it's mate in one; Qh3, Q/Rxg3# would have been the mates. Great game though.

Actually to rock and TWO bishops. If Magnus took the rock by queen, Ivanchuk had no time and pieces to create another idea. In zeitnot Ivanchuk was braver and luckier :-)
Because if Bishop takes knight white will play bd3 first (attacking the black Queen) and after black moves his Queen white will recapture the Bishop, ivanchuck probably didn't want to give his Bishop pair
Ackongagya Da 1.bishop takes knight , queen takes bishop , queen takes rook 2. If queen exchange happens after bishop takes knight its better for magnus because he is losing on position
If bishop take knight, pawn take bishop(white rook realease), Queen take bishop, pawn to front will threaten queen and bishop. White will win the position
