Savatage never got the fame or recognition they deserved. Absolutely awesome band to see live back in the day. Cris Olivas RIP was one of the most unhearalded guitarists to ever grace an album. In my opinion, he was one of the 4 or 5 best rock guitarists of all time. Jon Olivas, his brother , awesome vocalist obviously, went on to even greater fame and fortune with Trans Siberian Orchestra.

Fun fact: Ray Gillen (Black Sabbath, Badlands) is background singer in this song, he had such a cool voice and high tone, one of my favourites. Which transitions into me requesting you should do Badlands - High wire or The Last Time. Awesome band which included former Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Jake Lee. They were kinda like Led Zeppelin on steroids and if Zeppelin would keep doing music in the late 80's that's what it would sound like in many ways.

Dreams in the Dark is one of the best Badlands songs. Another fun fact about Ray Gillen is that he was almost Blue Murder's singer. There are some demo songs out there. Tony Martin was considered as well. His fingerprints are all over Valley of the Kings.

Btw, because you asked, TNT, the meaning of the song is basically this. Savatage was a heavily metaphysical band. IE, most of their songs were about magic. Strange Wings is about meeting an otherworldly lover, and pursuing her to the ends of reality. Yes, this happens in the other planes, occasionally.

To be honest, I think the woman was supposed to be more other worldly. Glad you liked this. I think this is the best song on this recording. I always wondered why I liked this song so much, then I put it together. If you have ever heard the Scorpions, you will know what I mean when I say that this song starts with a Scorpions style guitar run. It is very similar sounding to the beginning of Rock You Like a Hurricane. They also, had a guest backing vocalist on this song, Ray Gillen from Badlands. Savatage’s producer, Paul O’Neill was also producing Badlands at this time (1987) and I think he had something to do with that. Other good songs on this album are Legions and Devastation. This was the beginning of Savatage’s turn to a Prog Metal sound. Check out all the CD’s after this. They are among their best. The CD’s are, Gutter Ballet, Streets, Edge of Thorns, Handful of Rain, The Wake of Magellan and Poets and Madmen. Understand that this is the same band who invented and form the basis of Trans Siberian Orchestra. The whole band plays in it. TSO is more accessible, but Savatage is heavier.

A couple members of Savatage went on to be founding members of the Trans Siberian Orchestra, if you've heard of them. Much more well known. The cool thing about this video I'm linking is that this is actual footage of a lights setup a fan did at their house. TSO liked it so much, they bought the footage and made this the official music video for the song. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pWBjl-jPcVM.html

What are you talking about? A couple of members? First off, original lead singer Jon Oliva and Producer Paul O’Neill came up with the idea for TSO after the Savatage song Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24 from the Dead Winter Dead album blew up. Also, Savatage (The whole band) form the base band for TSO.

Read on if you're brave enough...Lol, I love me some Savatage, and as "corny," and "hair band, radio-ready" as this one is, I actually like it...a lot. Been on my stay-list for three decades plus...and, the girls always liked this one too. (Lol, I have a little personal bet going on with myself about which on of the reaction channels I'm subbed to is gonna be the first to dive headfirst into the "Hair Bands" of the 80's and 90's and REALLY do some in-depth reactions to em...most have checked out a few songs. But, I'm talking about taking the gloves off for a weekend or something. Despite it's deserved, and sometimes undeserved reputation, a lot is "next level" playing skill and vocals. Gonna be interesting to see who's brave enough lol...I think it'll be interesting to see what comes out of the woodwork on that one too...and you self-proclaimed "hardcore" Metal fans, of which I'm certainly one, that claim you don't listen to the stuff? Lol, you're lyin. C'mon, there's NO shame in that.) But, if you dig this, check out "Standing Alone" by White Wolf...I think most would like it.

Check the channel. We've been on an 80s kick for a minute and I've covered plenty of hair metal bands. I even spent a day exploring the glam roots of Pantera. I love this era. Its an interesting genre of flamboyant masculinity. Although, these guys wore make up and had their hair done up like women, they'd still beat your ass for disrespecting them.

(And, persuade that Nubian queen of yours to keep appearing with ya doin reactions...you're too ugly to have to look at lol...me too...I suffer from terminal ugliness. Just giggin ya a little bit lol...she's easier on the eyes)
@drew65sep

@@TheAdventuresofTNT lol, yeah...everybody gets shocked when they find out about Pantera's early days. I actually had that horrid LP. But, I let a friend borrow my copy years ago, so God knows where it is now...the music isn't really too bad. Lol, it's the "visuals" that are horrid. There's some really cool bootleg stuff of Pantera's early days floating around if one is curious enough to look. I know those dudes were HUGE fans of KISS, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, etc...there's a few covers that they did floating around as well. (I do want to suggest that you check out Megadeth's covers of KISS' "Strange Ways" and Thin Lizzy's "Cold Sweat." Also, Sabbath's "Paranoid." They're pretty badass...que em up in your spare time.)

If the music godz had ever been fair, this song should've been Savatage's mainstream "breakout" hit back in 1987/88. They had already cracked into the MTV 'Headbanger's Ball' world with their first single/video from this album, the title-track "Hall Of The Mountain King", which we all know and love. But if they had followed it up with "Strange Wings" as their 2nd video/single, with it being a much more radio-friendly, melodic song, I believe that they could've actually broken out more into the mainstream back then, because of the huge popularity of "hair metal" on MTV at the time. But instead the band/management decided to go the "heavier" route and chose "24 Hours Ago" as their 2nd single/video, which while still being an all-time classic metal song in it's own right, it only helped to shore-up their popularity in the metal "underground" scene at the time (Metallica, Megadeth, etc.), and didn't help them breakout any further into the mainstream or onto radio. So I always felt that it was a bit of a missed opportunity, because even though Strange Wings was sent to radio as their 3rd single, it didn't have an MTV video behind it as well, which bands really needed back then to help break into the mainstream - and so unfortunately it didn't get much radio airplay. Back then videos routinely cost over $100,000 to produce, so until an artist reached certain sales levels, record companies were reluctant to fork out the cash to fund and push a video at MTV - usually a metal band had to have gone Gold already (500,000 sales) before they got to do a 3rd video for an album. Savatage were able to get respectable sales of over 250,000 at the time, but it still wasn't enough for the record company to help push them to that next level, with more video and marketing support. The record biz was definitely a wicked game, and sometimes timing and choice of video/single was everything to catch the attention of viewers on MTV (and subsequently, listeners on radio). But I truly believe that Strange Wings could've been a mainstream hit for Savatage back in 1987/88 if they had made a video for it - alot of times Fate can be cruel for truly talented artists...

Criss Oliva... Guitar God, criminally underrated and ignored by the so called guitar aficionados. 🖤🖤 I love that he turned down Dave Mustain's offer to join Megadeth giving the job to second choice Marty Friedman (no disrespect to Marty as he is faultless and an absolute monster of a player who probably suited the job better).. Rip to such talent that we lost at only age 30 🤘🏻🤘🏻
@davidgrier7705
@davidgrier7705 Год назад
I believe that Criss actually turned down Dave Mustaine's offer to replace Chris Poland in early 1987, and instead was replaced briefly by Jay Reynolds of Malice, and then later by Jeff Young, for the 1988 album 'So Far, So Good...So What!'. Friedman was asked to join Megadeth in early 1990 - I believe that Dave asked both Dimebag Darrel and Jeff Waters of Annihilator if they would join, but they turned him down...

@@billybushmaster Fine, it doesn't matter which number album it is - I'm just trying to understand what you were originally trying to say up above, because you weren't being clear at all. This video is about the song "Strange Wings", and you insinuated that it was from 'Power of the Night', which it clearly isn't. But you also mentioned the song "Skull Session" - are you trying to say that they have similar music/riffs/melodies, etc.?

A band I think you'll really like that totally has this 80s vibe, even though they're modern, is Enforcer. Check out the song "Undying Evil". You'll be hooked. I know I was. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5EExbLCeUnI.html

This song is based on a dream that Jon Oliva had about a blonde woman with wings riding a horse and every time he would get close to her she would disappear.
