Come Sail Away is a must but PLEASE DO NOT react to the "Official Video". It cuts out around a minute of the song. Renegade, Crystal Ball, Blue Collar Man, Fooling Yourself, Castle Walls, Lorelei etc... these are all great songs. There are more in their catalogue as well. They are the first band to sell 4 triple platinum albums in a row. No one had done that before them.

Yes, agreed! Do NOT react to the "official video" of "Come Sail Away" which cuts out the iconic instrumental part. Instead, please react to the album version which is just over 6 minutes. Great reaction!

This is 80's Styx. I like both decades but 70's Styx is just fantastic. Try 'Renegade', 'Come Sail Away', 'Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)', 'The Grande Illusion', 'Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)', many more, they were a hit machine.

STYX is a very polarizing band - they have two singer - this was Shaw and he wanted a more rock oriented sound and there was DeYoung who has one of rocks greatest voices, and he was more theatrical. They did a concept album and Shaw hated it and DeYoung loved it and it didn’t end well
@Vaelsung1
@Vaelsung1 3 года назад
They actually have 3 singer/songwriters that includes James "JY" Young whose best song is generally acknowledged to be "Miss America" from The Grand Illusion album. The Grand Illusion, Pieces of Eight, Paradise Theatre and Kilroy Was Here were all concept albums. However, Kilroy is the concept that broke up the band until 1990 with "Edge of the Century"(without Tommy Shaw) and then again in 1996 with "Return To Paradise". I also STRONGLY encourage NOT to listen to the "Official Video" of Come Sail Away. Please listen to the album version which actually was the radio version people first heard in 1977 and continues to hear even today.

I graduated in 1978 and virtually everybody loved Styx and most everyone owned their "Grand Illusion" album. "Mr Roboto" came much later and was, in my opinion, one of the worst of their hits. It's the song that made me and many of my friends begin to drift away from Styx a little (sort of "jumped the shark" with that one). There are so many better songs by Styx to listen to.

78 Grad as well. Styx was my fave band, have seen them in concert 11 times back in the day. Dennis DeYoung, and Tommy Shaw apparently went their separate ways. Dennis was stressing out he quit the band, and Styx hired another singer, Tommy decided to go solo, he made an album "Girls with Guns". Then he teamed up with Ted Nugent, Jack Blades from Night ranger, & Mike Carteloni and formed a band called Damn Yankees. You ought t listen to their songs: Come Again, High Enough, Mistified, Pile-driver, and many more...

It's almost like a religious experience it's so positive and loving, and their real fans are some of the kindest human beings on the planet. You've already seen a ton of great song suggestions - I endorse them all. I havent seen any of any after Mr. Roboto. IF you want to hear something after they broke up and got back together "Show Me The Way" that's a nice ballad - became a bit of an anthem for The Gulf War back in 1991. Another great one I haven't seen mentioned: Best Of Times

You both are spot on. Styx has 3 lead singers. The main two are Dennis Deyoung ( Roboto, Come Sail Away, Suite Madame Blue, Lady, Show Me The way, The Best of Times, Queen of Spades, Castle Walls, Babe ( The song Babe started the breakup & Roboto put the band breakup over the top according to Tommy & JY 'as they still cashed their checks')... Tommy Shaw ( Man In The Wilderness, Renegade, Too Much Time On My Hands, Blue Collar Man, Fooling Yourself, Crystal Ball...) James JY Young ( Miss America, Heavy Metal Poisoning, Midnight Ride, Snowblind ( JY & Tommy together).... Styx was one of the greatest & most versatile bands EVER. Top 10 songs in 3 decades 70's, 80's & 90's. Please play the video & song Show Me the way. One of the most powerful videos & songs ever performed. Thanks for the great review & insight into the band. Guy's, here's the deal with Styx....After the final lineup of Dennis De Young, James Young, Tommy Shaw, and the Panozzo brothers was established, a disagreement started between Dennis and the rest of the band. He favored more of the theatrical sound and concept thing (Mr. Roboto) with the rest of the band wanting to do more of the rock thing (Blue Collar Man). It ended up with the band asking Dennis to do his own thing.

It wasn't the *"Roboto"* song itself that broke them up. It was the stage show that Dennis DeYoung (vocals on Roboto), forced the members to perform during the *"Kilroy..."* tour. It was really cheesy, and over the top ridiculous. During two shows in Texas that year, they were booed, and people began leaving, once they began the "play" portion of the show. Incidentally, Dennis DeYoung is no longer in the band. A great song to react to is *"Miss America."* The studio version, not live. Very few people have listened to it. The tune is a cynical look at the beauty pageant...

Most "real Styx fans" will disown you for saying Mr. Roboto is your favorite - just so you know. Man in the Wilderness was sung by Tommy Shaw - same as this one. But this is this 80s vibe. Man in Wilderness was a little more classic rock sound and is my personal favorite song by them along with Crystal Ball and Suite Madam Blue (both from the 70s) Mr. Roboto album was just a different appeal and created a rift in the fan base; but today I still like that song.
