I don't know about anyone else, but the last few thousand feet of descent is almost magical, the views are always worth having a window seat for - even if the area is drab at ground level, up in the sky it somehow gains charm.

A year ago I flew on an AA 757 from DFW to LAX. When we landed at LAX the pilot was in a big hurry to get off the runway. When we made the turn I could see why, a HUGE Quantas A 380 was right behind us, so close that I'm surprised the 380 didn't execute a missed approach. We could have been an early lunch for the 380. TRUE STORY.

Nice Video - best part of flying when you land and the aircraft slows rapidly! Pilot appeared to use moderate reverse thrust, could be he wanted to take a certain exit or had been asked to expedite vacating the runway due to following aircraft on final approach. I think the runway here is more than long enough for a 757! Reverse is often selected at idle on landing as a precaution in the event of braking problems, not used so much these days though.Normal landing however, not 'heavy or fast'.

Many times they'll brake nice and hard so they can slow down and turn off before crossing a major runway, depending on where the terminal is. At LaGuardia in NYC, the runways are really short so they go full power reverse thrust and hard on the brakes, and then try to go even further and use only half of the runway to keep traffic flowing faster.

Once, on my return to HNL, I sat at the window behind the port-side engine. The humidity was just right that, as we touched down, 3 thin streams of air, looking just like the smoke used in wind tunnel tests, flowing over the wing. It was surprising to see, especially one going over the air brake. They dissipated quickly when the reverse thrust was deployed. How I wished I had my video camera out, but alas, I had followed the flight attendant's instructions to turn off and stow my electronics ...

In 1976, while working for JAL @ LAX, I observed a Mexicana B727 attempt to take off from runway 25R with the center engine in reverse thrust. I could not believe what was happening! I kept thinking that the EGT on that motor must have been deep in the red and that plane had a FE to also observe front panel instruments? At about 6,000 feet, of a 12,000 foot runway, the pilots realized it and, suddenly; full flaps, speed brakes, reverse thrust, wheel brakes & feet dragging on the ground!
@Chuck59ish
@Chuck59ish 8 лет назад
I actually got in a RU-vid argument with some people who thought the heavy aircraft like airliners and military transports used the wheel brakes when they landed instead of flaps, spoiler and Thrust reversers.
@TheMacandpcguy
@TheMacandpcguy 8 лет назад
+Charles Damery They do have wheel breaks, and they are used?
@Chuck59ish
@Chuck59ish 8 лет назад
Usually wheel brakes are used when the aircraft is pulling into it's parking spot and they are set as a parking brake on shutdown and start up. They are also used when towing an aircraft in case the tow bar breaks. I've seen first hand what happens when the pilot over uses the wheel brakes, the safety valves in the wheels can blow out to prevent fires, aircraft tires are filled with nitrogen for this purpose since it's an inert gas and doesn't support flames. If the brake discs get overheated the wheels can seize and then you have big problems, especially on the main runway.
@nankervisj
@nankervisj 8 лет назад
+Charles Damery Airliners do use a system called Autobrake quite often when landing and what it does is it essentially removes the need for the pilots to burn excessive amounts of fuel when using reverse thrust and also means the pilots don't have to worry about braking during landing, hence the word "auto' in "autobrake". Yes the brakes do heat up when using this system, obviously, but there are normally 3 different modes; 1 or low, 2 or medium, and 3 or max, and each applies a different amount of pressure on the brakes. so yeah, Brakes need to be replaced when they are used too much, but thrust reversers burn a lot of fuel, so when they are used together the costs can be kept down for the airline
@Chuck59ish
@Chuck59ish 8 лет назад
Yeah, with the modern airliners, they speed sensors in the main wheel that will allow the wheel brakes to used below a certain speed so they can use the brakes when they turn off the runways. You can really feel it if you land on a wet runway, after the thrust reverservers have slow the aircraft down to the point the brakes can take over, you'll sometimes get the antiskid pulsing on and off to control the aircraft.
@Chuck59ish
@Chuck59ish 8 лет назад
If the runway is long enough and his cutoff ramp is far enough down the runway, this would be the ides plan to reduce where and tear on the equipment. But in real life, the GCs want the aircraft off the runway ASAP so usually heavy reverser use if the norm.

I noticed the landing was about 500ft long on runway 12 (a 9355ft long runway) at Q2 but exited on U. If it felt like the deceleration was higher than usual for your previous B757 flights, perhaps they wanted to make sure to not cross runway 09/27 which might end-up as a hold short 09/27 (more delays) at Q8 (off the end of 12) in case 09 is also being used. Just a guess as I look at this airport diagram.
@danenglish3650
@danenglish3650 7 лет назад
Yeah that's real fun when you live a mile or so from the airport and they do that about every few minutes until 1 AM then start again at about 5AM. All after changing runways and flight patterns. Sucks big time.

and by using half of the runway, I don't mean in any way that airplanes are "sharing" runways, but that taxing across them multiple times to get back to the terminal can slow down ground traffic.

That's not the way it is in other parts of the US. In New England, 5 each way is considered a lot, and is usually only used where two highways split in the same direction. What you're looking at is the Palmetto Expressway just north of the NW 36th St interchange. This expressway is 4-7 lanes in width in each direction from the I-75 terminus south to the Don Shula Expressway split, passing the airport in between.

@Love2pak 11 лет назад
You are actually right, it could be due to two factors.....1. There was an incoming plane from behind so the tower asked to "expedite" the braking or 2. Because they were a "Miami based crew" as the flight attendant said, the pilot wanted to take the closest taxiway to the gate since this airport was probably second nature for him, so he knew exactly where to turn off for a particular gate.....good video nonetheless...
@compteck7
@compteck7 11 лет назад
I was listening through out the video and you could hear the pilot feathering the engines up and down, then just before touchdown he feathered them up again perhaps due to crosswinds or what have you..that could have affected the actual landing speed so you would need more braking hence a longer reverse thrust burn
